    I normally hate SGs but I love pretty much everything about that one. The typical SG neck dive defiles what would otherwise be my complete affection for it.

    • @nilswegner2881
      @nilswegner2881 Před 4 lety +5

      The neck dive and the output jack on the front that is. The SG shape is still ugly in my opinion but some of the specs like the frx, the pickups and the fact it only has two knobs instead of that 4 knob Nonsens would make this guitar quite useful for me. But not with the output jack on the front like that, my wireless doesn't have an angled jack plug and I know I'd break it as soon as I hit the stage with the guitar. And a diving neck isn't a feature, Gibson, it is a flaw and I still don't quite understand why on earth they still haven't done anything against it

      @@jorgeloo3131 I'm more into Teles and Superstrats so I don't think I'll add any SG to my collection. A Double Cut LP special maybe because their horns look quite nice but I think the design of an SG is just straight on ugly. I've been using a Thomann t.Bone DS16 wireless system for as long as I play on stages and since it works for me I don't really want to upgrade it. I could of course replace the cable or at least the Jack plug with an angled one, I might even do it for the sake of being eble to sit on the couch with my guitars without bending the cable that much, but what really bothers me about this guitar is that Gibson still haven't fixed the neck dive issue

      @nilswegner2881 Před 4 lety +1

      It's always nice to see how opinions vary. I mostly hate SGs, I think they are ugly and because of neck dive unplayable for me. Also having the output Jack on the front like this would never work for me because I don't have an angled jack plug on my wireless. This one SG is still better than the rest of them because it has done away with the 2 pots per pickup Nonsens and only has master tone and volume knobs which is exactly what I need. Also it does not have that tuneomatic bridge crap that most Gibsons have but rather a Floyd rose which makes it actually usable for me (I need a trem on my guitar for what I play and I'm not a fan of bigsby). But then there's that neck dive and output jack on the front that makes this guitar as worthless as any other SG or Gibson really to me.

    Ok, just a tip for anyone considering putting a Floyd rose FRX on their guitar I would like to give you some tips as someone who put one on their Wylde audio odin grail
    1.) if you don’t use a Gibson the carve of the top does matter and if it’s to carved (like on my odin grail) you’ll need to get it routed out so the compression spring can work
    2.) you can use a D-Tuna on it but you physically won’t be able to pull it back plus you loose some fine Tuning range (I would suggest tuning the low E a bit flatter then you normally would with the other bass strings)
    3.) you can make it EXTREMELY loose to the point where you push it down with a pinky
    4.) PLEASE use normal gauge strings, if you try and use a Hendrix type gauge with it the tuning stability WILL go down the toilet so I would recommend something like a normal set of 10’s or 11’s for normal Gibsons with an FRX
    5.) the locking nut system that comes with the guitar has screws that may be to big so I would suggest going to Home Depot and buying the same size screw just smaller

    Hello there, thank you for the review of the SG CM Black. I've owned mine now for 3years and I absolutely Love it! It has the '59 LP style neck and plays so good! The previous SG I owned was an All American 1998 model that had the typical thin profile SG neck . It played good as well,but the 2016 CM Black has more overall to e due to meatier neck! The Dirty Fingers pick ups are brutal when the volume is on 10! I've discovered however when I go from my 2005 Peavey 5150 II amp to the 1988 Marshall JCM 900 those Dirty Finger pick ups.are so versatile! I can back off the volume knob to 6 or 8 gives you more of the traditional SG tone! So I really Love that aspect of it! It was a limited run so they are definitely hard to find!

    I ordered one of these Les Paul-models some years ago, just out of curiosity. The looks are up to one‘s taste, I personally like it very much. The finish is my absolute favorite, because it makes the neck easy to play. The trem is absolutely okay, needs to be set up correctly though. There is a small spring which helps to keep it in tune by slightly locking it in the middle position. That can be set up or even removed, but I found this very helpful to stay in tune. The flat top might help with the FRX, since it could touch a heavily carved top. This guitar is absolutely great. The PUs are okay, but again subject to taste and I‘m just about to make a change there. Has anyone ever seen those Dirty Fingers+ sold seperatley?

    You get more upward motion once you actually set it up for floating. Turning the thumbscrew only unblocks the bridge, you have to adjust the tension rod in the back to balance the tension between the strings/back spring. Once that's balanced you'll have a MUCH wider range of motion, similar to an OG floyd

    2016 was the best year for modern Gibsons. The reason you like that satin finish so much is because for 2016 it is an actual Nitrocellulose finish unlike other years where they would use cheaper chemical treatments. The only Les Paul I own is a 2016 studio with the same satin finish :)

    The FRX is designed to be a drill-less mod on a typical USA Gibson (outside of the optional locking nut). I'm a Floyd player, and the FRX is kinda like a happy medium between a modern Strat trem and a standard Floyd (it's almost like a typical Kahler). I'm not And yeah, the inserts for Nashville bridge are intended to be pressed into the body...so yeah, you could easily convert that into a standard Tuneomatic/Stop Tailpiece configuration.
    The Dean Zelinsky Z Glide neck is a laser-engraved pattern designed to minimize the effective surface area of the neck for faster playing. It's a VERY different feel from a standard satin or oiled maple neck (I've played a Z Glide and it's really nice...but I prefer the unfinished, tung oiled maple necks on my Kiesels). I love the Dirty Fingers+...but I'm a hard rock/metal girl :)

    It seems to me that the Floyd FRX does pretty similar things like the Stetsbar system. Both top mount (Stetsbar is a fully non-invasive mount on a tune-o-matic & stoptail thread config), allow to pitch down and up, and are able to lock. The springs in the Stetsbar do not work against you that much, in the movement is lateral rather than rotating around a knife edge post...one more similarity: They are bith pricey😉.

    Thanks for go'n through the CM model. I recall be'n really interested in these, come'n across them on their web site then. I didn't get a chance to check one out unfortunately.. At the time I had a Gibson LP & SG, so I thought why not buy a Floyd top-loader trem and a set of dirty fingers and take my pick of which one I'm gonna put them in n' on. I never did though cause I came across a local cat who was make'n guitars that I like'd way more than the corporate stuff. I sold my Gibson's to buy another one of his. No regrets!

    Hi Trog, been enjoying the in depth "nerd-fest" reviews ( compliment ). You quickly flashed a LP with the P90s pups and I thought I'd give it a go to maybe ask for some review / detail / history of the P90"slugs". They dont seem to be popular, but I would love to know more about it. Even in the midst of loads of reviews of Specials with them, very little mention is made of the pups themselves. Keep it going, and keep well.

      @@antma9028 because I like learning things about music and instruments that I didn't know before and also because I just like the way Austin presents his guitars in the reviews and demos.
      This guitar has some interesting features too, that set it far apart from the normal SG:It has only two knobs which is what I prefer, it has a trem( that's not a bigsby or vibrola, those are not for me), It's black, all my other guitars except for my acoustics and one Tele are black too and it has hot pickups which are well suited for my style of playing. But then there's the fact that this is an SG at its core which I don't like aesthetically because of its horns. I like those of a DC special much more for example. And it's got its output jack on the front, I prefer them on the side or recessed, the way Fender has it on a lot of their Strats. And what about neck dive? Still not fixed. Since the SG came to the market it had this issue. And to this day it still has it, which is a no go for me. But we all know this is not the only flaw that Gibson will never fix, just look at the thousands of guitars which have had headstock repairs because they just cannot get the angle right. Never had this issue on my Ibanez superstrat or Squier Tele

    Thats funny ive got an frx on my sg and a tp6 with an frx locking nut on my les Paul. The onlything that I couldnt adjust was the throb sound i get from slapping my bar. But I think the next gen will fix it. I love it more than any of my other floyds. Also it can be configured in (and messed with further past the configurations) three setups. Full float (regular Floyd), semi float(strat), and no float(hard tail or more like a tp6).
    They're a great piece of equipment. I wish they would put the frx on the SG future personally.
