What Happened To LOUIS VUITTON’s Craftsmanship? Mini Pochette & Key Pouch Quality | My First Luxury

  • Louis Vuitton used to make some of the highest quality luxury goods. And don’t get me wrong, they still make great products and the quality is still up there - for the most part. Recently, more buyers are observing visible issues with their purchases.
While Louis Vuitton pieces are crafted by hand, you would expect to see slight variances between pieces - even made by the exact same artisan. However, there is a line between natural variance and unsellable within every goods-producing business. The more strict your quality control, the stronger your reputation for highest quality. That means, once you’re relaxing your control and give more freedom to the crafter, it will be noticed. Especially, if a company like Louis Vuitton is know to craft to highest standards, everything below that standard may even come across as counterfeit!
This video is dedicated to visualise this issue comparing Louis Vuitton’s 2020 Holiday Animation Mini Pochette and Key Pouch Quality.

Yup. Im so disappointed with LV at this point. Ive been wanting a neverfull azur with rose ballerine interior so my husband bought it for me couple weeks ago. Crooked stitchings and all that. I was so happy till I saw how low quality and ugly the craftsmanship is. We drove back to the store and exchange it, the other one have the same issue. I dont understand how these factory error even allowed to go on the floor and to be sold to the clients. Worse thing I noticed is when you take a piece back to the store due to a flaw or factory error instead to taking it to the back so it wont be sold to another client SA’s just shove flawed bag right in the drawers! Instead of enjoying your purchase you actually get stressed out with the flaws youre finding on you new bag. Since then I took my business to Chanel. LV has to pause and take a look of how poor quality are the products they are selling to people. I wish I can attach photos here to show how ugly the stitching on my bag.

Hi, my name is Camille and I'm french and working in a LV factory (I assemble Tote V bags). I'd like to comment on a few things.
The main reason why items dont look the same is because they are made by real people and not machine and that the machines we use are all different. First of, small items like coin holders and little "bonus" stuff you get for purchasing a handbag or as a "come along" piece are considered like... some lower quality items that are just here to compliment a handbag and that is why the quality requirements is lower. Now in my team we are 5 people and we have 5 different ways of assembling kind of. We don't hold the materials the same, we don't pay attention to details the same way, some have better vision or feeling or experience than others, in short, we are all different and while most bags are "standard" I can tell if one is mine or someone else's. It doesn't mean they have defects, they are just different.
About the puffy or not puffy look, this can be explained by either storage or shipment ways or the material being different. We have multiple companies that make a same piece used on our products, metal pieces especially (which is why they don't all look the same even though they'e supposed to). Why? Because we produce SO many pieces of a same bag or product that it would be impossible for a single company to handle the production of all V Tote's metal pieces world wide for example. Buying from multiple sub companies also allow flexibility. When our partner companies in china were on lockdown because of corona it allowed us to keep working thanks to our partners in europe. It' bad for quality but immensely better and safer for business and I am grateful for this strategy that allowed lV to keep paying their employees exactly the same despite the current state of the world right now (and we are quite well paid at that).
About the crease on the pouch, this is an actual defect that have passed through my colleagues' checks because it is no threat to the longevity of the product, it is just a problem of "looks". If you don't like it just dont buy it, kinda thing.
About the stitch holes being messy, all canvases arent the same. Some will be more fragile, some thinner, some thicker, some will have had a better finish than others, etc. That is, again, because PEOPLE make them, not machines per se. Things like temperature, humidity or sun exposure can make the aspect of the canvas vary. I dont have lots of infos on how it's made exactly but I've been handling so many different versions of the same canvas that I know what I'm talking about. Variations in how the canvas looks or feel are NORMAL. As long as they are no danger to the longevity of the product it's all good.
Stitches showing is usually a matter of flexibility of the canvas and sewing machine parameters like the sharpness of the needle, the tension of the thread or the machines simply being different models and functionning differently.
Stitches looking different is normal. Threads are different colors so first they dont reflecr light the same way. Then the threads we use are, again not all coming from the same place. Sometimes the way they are rolled around their base varies, sometimes the way the thread is curled varies, etc. It's all completely normal. The "zigzags" are made by turning the needle a little bit on the side, it is NOT a requirement and is up to the worker to decide wether or not to use it. The stitching looking different underneath is normal. Leathers are all different (different colors so different chemicals but even just different animals) so they dont react the same. Different machines with different thread tension can do that as well. The stitches you call "irregular" are just as regular as the rest, its just that the thread sank a little bit more into the leather. This is no craftmanship issue but sinply the skins being different and you will understand that we cant just change our machines parameters for every piece of leather we get when you know that, 5 people are asked to produce 30 V Tote BB per day.
About the overall quality getting worse : LV, like all other companies, is a victim of our society in which consuming is more important than quality, unfortunately. Just like poorly crafter clothes fill up regular people's closets, luxury brands, to keep making money, have to give meople more products every year. that can be achieved by reducing the tests ran on prototypes and jumping into production right away for example. Or just being less focused on quality. Is it sad? Yes, but next time you look at LV with disappointment, remember the last time you went to mac donald's instead of buying good quality meat at a bitcher and making your own hamburger. LV's just following the customers' way of buying.

      Hi Camille.
Thank you for taking the time to join in on this topic. I appreciate you sharing your insights and knowledge with the community to help form a better understanding.
I used to be an SA at LV Beverly Hills so I might have found new owners for some of "your" bags in the past and I enjoy my personal pieces to this day.
Everything you said is shedding light on the „other side" that customers usually don't know much about and companies don't want to portrait in the marketing. But when the expectations that are set through the marketing don't match the product, that's when the problems start.
Like you mentioned, there has been a shift towards higher output and understandably leaves you and other crafts(wo)men less chance to focus on quality, which leaves none of us happy other than the shareholders and management...
I'm afraid that those business decisions will impact the brands image and reputation in a negative way. I'm hoping LV will shift towards quality and longterm success over short-lived increased sales numbers.
The fact that everything is hand-made by an actual human artisan is what makes it special and minor differences give it character and are not a problem. The problem comes with the counterfeit market and the challenge of telling a fake apart from a genuine LV piece.
Regarding the "bonus stuff", those pieces don't come for free. Even the less expensive items do come at a comparably high price and should reflect consistent quality just like higher priced items. I see your point and understand the pressure artisans receive from management but a customer would expect the same level of quality since the company is often seen as a „black box“ and quality variations across the lineups are not expected. Especially considering that these pieces are often the first purchase and create a lasting impression. If it's good you'll have a happy customer for years to come. Again, this is a business decision made by the management.
People are willing to pay the price as long as the quality and image can reflect it. I hope LV will stay on the path of quality since that built the reputation it is enjoying now.
I appreciate your insights into the many details artisans have to consider. It’s very helpful to allow (to be) customers to be better educated and avoid unreasonable expectations.

@@MyFirstLuxury I would love to know more about shops, how they are run and how are you asked to behave with clients etc. Since workers in factory never are in contact with the clients it'd be interesting. If you wanna know other things and I'm allowed to talk about them, I'd be happy to answer you or anybody else. I really don't like it when I see that my hard worl that clients have NO IDEA about isnt appreciated. Whenever I see a complaint about quality, I think about the co worker who worked on the bag. There are so many things that outside people don't know about. On another hand I do understand that for such high price some flaws are unforgivable. It is a complex issue that I don't think anybody knows how to solve.

Seems someone needs to re-evaluate the manufacturing process.

It is crazy... I actually used to collect Louis Vuitton, and I've been working now for 5 years in the Second Hand market, and all I can say is I saw the 'reverse evolution' in LV's quality level of craftsmanship in their bags... For your info, the top quality products are the ones from 1990 until 2014! After that, a huge downgrade has been seen, and it is worse every year. Of course, the prices, on their side, keep getting higher and higher!
But, I have to say, their leathers for handbags (other than the Vachetta leather or ANY Canvas bag) is actually quite okay, and the exotic leathers are of quite high quality, compared, let's say, to Gucci's exotic leather! Thank you so much for doing a video about that : ciao ciao LV :)

    • @lctrfab
      @lctrfab Před 3 lety +2

I forgot to mention : the 'differences between two similar pochettes' will be explained/excused as 'it is man-made, and any difference in similarity makes it a unique product, a true symbol of craftsmanship, against a machine that can do the perfect work'... Even though that is accurate, the concept of 'quality control' would not let all the items out of the factories, and would insist on reviewing the progres.. But that would cost too much for the margins they aim for, so they just let that low-level, keep their prices high and ensure a perfect 80-90% margin

The quality is so inconsistent, but at the same time they claim that this is also due to the fact that their items are hand made. That being said, some of the construction issues I think means that some of their artisans might need more training, and /or their quality control personnel need more training too! TFS!

Great video! I love the comparison you’ve made. Years ago when I first began purchasing LV, I wasn’t mindful about flaws, quality or where the item was made. I’m more knowledgeable now when making a purchase. I think it just boils down to what the buyer finds acceptable. Nothing or no one is perfect so I keep that in mind. With that being said, there is nothing wrong with returning an item because you’re not pleased with the quality. It is after all your money that your spending. You should always be satisfied with your purchase. Thank you for sharing your insight.

For the handbag, I had to return one and look at about 4 bags over a span of months to find one properly made.
As for the key pouch, I think the new version with the more flexible canvas allows for more variabilitiy in how it is made since it is made by hand. Items like michael kors are made by machine or even marc jacobs are always the same.
People say I'm OCD, but for the price, I feel like you have to love the item

What an interesting comparison! The ones that don’t have the country of origin are made in USA. Curious if you saw a difference by country of origin? 🤔 I was told US factories focus is on canvas and logistically we here get mostly made in USA canvas pieces. And apparently the MIU seems to have more quality issues than their Europe made counterparts. Not that made in France is perfect by any means. I definitely think LV needs to up their quality control especially with the USA factories. Great video! TFS!

The first key pouch you picked up at 1:45 minutes into the video is how my key pouch that arrived last week looked. Made in the USA (don't now if that matters". I took it back to the store to return and the manager said that's "normal" but can return it if I want. Which I did. It's NOT normal and shame on LV for allowing items like this to pass QC. I'm getting the GG Supreme key pouch instead. I know handmade items will have variation in the end product but a clear indent in the canvas has nothing to do with "individual artisans" making the pouch.

A no made in stamp 😱😱😱 i just can’t believe that is how they are resolving the whole Made in US disdain people have. It’s interesting to me that all of your mini Pochette were made in France and you still had flaws, the made in France pieces are very sought after, especially in the community. They even resell better! That was very surprising to me! Love your close ups always 🥰🥰🥰. You look gorgeous by they way! That shade of green looks beautiful on your skin tone❣️❣️❣️

Great video! I'm not willing to pay for flaws. I understand there will be variation in craftsmanship with any handmade item but I think LV needs to increase their minimum quality standards or just have better controls because I don't feel that any handbag/SLG, luxury or not, should have dents/warping when you receive it. In fact, if Coach or Kate spade can produce handbags that don't have these flaws, I don't see why LV, a luxe brand, can't ensure the quality meet or exceeds contemporary brands. I think by default, when we hear something is "luxe" we expect the item to be better quality/craftsmanship. I've heard that the made in USA pieces tend to have more flaws but I can't speak from experience... I don't have a lot of LV pieces. Thanks for sharing and have a great day!

You have made some excellent points here, Elina. I completely agree with you. We have a much higher expectation in quality standards than the non luxury brands & so we often find issues like this are less excusable. I also don't think the pieces that are produced in different parts of the world should have such different quality standards, so to see it actually being true, makes me sad a little. Thank you so much for being an awesome viewer who share such honest views 💖😘Have a great week, Dear Elina.

I agree. This is very disappointing to hear. I have many bags from MK, Coach, etc. and never had to go over them with a microscope. I was able to enjoy the bags right away. I got my first LV bag recently after years of always wanting one and I am really sad to say that it did cross my mind why people were so obsessed with the brand and why it was so expensive. My other handbag from Coach has much more attention to detail and quality than LV does. And hearing all these horror stories coming from people buying LV is very disappointing. I really wanted to buy a PSM in the future but I don’t want to make 3+ rounds of purchases until I find the right one. To me that is not worth my time or money. I might choose to go with YSL instead.

This is quite sad to see. I recently experienced similar quality issue in two different bags - one being the Palm Spring Mini. The defects were with the bag straps. The two straps that I had were not the same length nor width. More importantly, one of the straps, the leather starts to peel apart in several areas. I am not a fuzzy consumer in all cases and would be happy to take the straps if they were just slightly off (length and width wise). The sales associate tried very hard to find me a matching strap by going through all the available stock, but almost every single one seems to have defects here and there. There was one where the stitching on the leather are coming off already, one where the edge has many tiny white dots that at first I thought it was the glue but then a closer look makes me suspecting that the glazing will soon come off...... I understand that that LV products are handmade not machine made, and there will be differences for each item and I am very appreciated that fact...but that is really not the reason to describe the sort of defects that I saw today. It shows the lack of attention of detail about the product quality for the price that was charged.
It really makes me feeling that LV has putting quality at the bottom of the priority. One of the main reason I would prefer LV than other luxury brands like Prada and Gucci in the past is their quality/product durability. But I can't help wonder if this is still correct. This is quite sad to see really given how iconic your brand image is to the world.
Some of the high end replica actually have better quality than the real one - very very sad to see!

I disagree. Just because the stitching is different on one item vs another doesn’t make it defective. I think it’s more of an issue with the appearance but the quality and longevity of the item shouldn’t be affected because the stitching is slightly different on one item vs another or because one item has a slight indent or doesn’t look exactly like another.
I personally think some people have unrealistic expectations about luxury items and believe they should essentially be bulletproof. If you wear a neverfull daily for years on end, guess what- it’s going to show some wear. Do not get upset because it doesn’t look identical to the day you purchased it. LV is a luxury brand and in my opinion is intended for the person to build a collection over time and swap out different pieces-not to wear one item into the ground. This is the way you prolong the life and longevity of your items. Sure, you can wear it into the ground if you want, but just don’t get upset when it eventually shows wear like all items do.

it's always nice to hear the videos on the channel are helpful to others & in this case, after working at Vuitton i had to mention the change of quality nowadays compared to before. Thanks for sharing your views.

I ordered 3 Felicie Pochettes and they all were defective. Every time it was worse than the previous. They all had gigantic dents and creases. It’s horrible. I don’t know how they shipped obviously defective items to a customer.

Lol, you are definitely not french, as a french person we know there are some "luxury" brands that are geared towards middle-class people and some that are actually luxury brands. LV is a typical example of a brand for the middle-class, absolutely not luxury in my opinion, just a way of saying I have money even though most people who wear LV don't really.

Oh, this has to be on point. There are way too many people carrying LV for this to be considered "luxury". It is no different then any other mass produced item. It gives the illusion of luxury, but it truly is not if so many can afford to have multiple bags and numerous slg's in their collection.
