WOW! What a wonderful stove and rich history. Which would be best for my kitchen, this Jotul 602 or an ESSE Bakeheart? Superb review again Gabriel, I can imagine you and Amy keeping and using this one yourselves.
It certainly is a lovely thing to own. The Bakeheart is vastly more powerful and larger for more cooking etc, but if you’ve got a smaller room then this is a superb option!

@@iancharles7596 I’ve never quite understood this output, because the reality couldn’t be further from that. Having installed and used one of these this 5kw output is frankly insane. It is easily bigger than many 8-12kw stoves I have tested.
Have had one for 25 years in California. I can heat my house so warm I have to open the patio doors. Also, it’s so efficient that I can burn even on the days our Environmental Protection Agency says no wood burning- this one is exempt. Love it and would have nothing else for wood burning but, they no longer seem to offer the larger variety of fabulous colors they used to offer. That’s disappointing.
If you have it for 25 years than you have old model and my recommendation is keep it. My wife and I are disappointed with this eco model after two seasons of use. I can not agree with some things stated in this video.
I live above 5k ft in SoCal and id have bought this stove but having 28 ft ceilings I got the discontinued 600. If only they had a larger variant I'd have bought it instead

Great little stove! I have the Jotul 602CB in my workshop and a Jotul F45 heating my log cabin. The 602 Eco isn’t available over here in the USA, Jotul made a different version the 602 V2.
I imagine they’re fairly similar? Glad to hear you’ve gotta few Jotul’s working well!
@@TheTortoise actually they aren’t very similar. The V2 air control is on the door and the baffle design is different. It would be interesting to see the testing differences.
@@wobdeehomestead1464 that sounds like the previous version. It can be pretty expensive getting products through all the EPA testing etc, so it may be that they haven’t updated that particular model yet.
I did some digging and Jotul says the Eco isn’t available in North America and when the new USA 2020 EPA regs came into effect they changed a few things in the CB to meet the regs and called it the V2. Looks like they added more secondary holes above the baffle along with some air disruption fins.

What happened to the perfect egg yolk when it hit the pan 😂. I’ve resisted buying our second burner as of yet hoping for some variation to the Ambition 5. I really like this one but not sure the dimensions are suited to our fireplace and of course it makes the Heta almost look reasonably priced!

Every chimney sweep and everything I read says not to run over night. Morso instructions say it is dangerous to run overnight. Would you recommend sweeping more often if you run overnight ? Love the articles by the way.
This is a really tricky one, because on the one hand many of us need/want to do it. The issue is that when it is done badly (like anything) there are adverse affects.
I’m always quite particular about how it is done and I talk about this quite a bit. I will test stoves and do all sorts of risky things whilst I am learning about a stove, but I will only take the view that a stove runs overnight if it can achieve the following:
It must burn for at least 8-10 hours
With kiln dried wood
Whilst maintaining a clean glass
Have enough embers to easily start a fire
Without the need for any kind of firelighter or match etc.
ideally the stove must also still be warm enough to register heat on the thermometer or have (if it has a solid top then) the fan still moving.
The final component is the user, which of course is what the channel is about, educating people!
If you can also achieve this, then you’ve done something really important. Particularly because many of my viewers live in situations where serious use is needed. The above practices keep the effect on the environment positive, the chimney cleaner (although regular sweeping is always sensible), the stove safer and of course the users home warmer and dryer.
Of course manufacturers are in a tricky situation and it makes sense to say a blanket rule that distances them from certain practices. Running overnight has been a serious need for 1000’s of homes, boats, caravans etc forever and will continue to be. I figure I’d rather not hide from it as well, and ensure it is done well (or as well as it can be).
Hi there ! Great review ! I am using this stove for his second winter now and I am struggling burning wood for more than 2 hours with it. I am using the iverted method which consist of stacking small pieces of wood on top of big chunks. I see you are starting the fire differently, I will try asap. Also, I can't burn for more than 2-3 hours and if I close the air intake the fire stopos and my window gets dark. Could you help me ? Thank you
This should help. Also worth making sure your wood is nice and dry, you have a good bed of ash. And once the stove is lit forget the small pieces, all these will do is increase temperature and burn speed unnecessarily.

Same thing here. Second winter, still struggling with this stove. We all know that dry and quality wood is important but I found this stove far away from something that I will recommend to someone.
Really interesting to hear this. However it is worth knowing that in my experience the vast majority of cases like this are caused by chimney rather than the stove. It might be worth saying what you’re struggling with as this stove really is a gem. If you were to struggle to light it, in most cases you could try 3 different stoves in the same fireplace and all would have the same issue.
Moin. Wir haben den Ofen jetzt seit 4 Tagen und sind super glücklich damit. Er sieht gut aus, passt genau in unsere Raumecke und heizt die gesamte Wohnung (100qm) schön schnell auf. Das mit dem Kochen haben wir bisher noch nicht ausreichend getestet. Tolles Gerät.
Aber heute kamen im bereich der Zuluft öffnung einige Tropfen Wasser raus. Komisch, ich meine das Holz ist trocken.
Mich würde interessieren welchen Weg die Frischluft nimmt. Muss ich die Löcher im unteren Bereich der Brennkammer reingigen? Können diese Verstopfen?

Kein Grund, die Luftlöcher zu reinigen. Dabei handelt es sich um Einlässe, die sich normalerweise von selbst verwalten, denn wenn Sie die Asche entleeren und den Ofen anzünden, bläst die einströmende Luft die Löcher frei. Was das Wasser betrifft, handelt es sich mit ziemlicher Sicherheit nur um etwas Wasser, das durch Regen oder Kondenswasser aus dem Schornstein herunterfließt. Sofern dies nicht zu einer Belästigung führt, verwende ich normalerweise den Herd und ignoriere ihn.

Did you already clean it once? What about ash getting behind the three little holes on the sides?
And did you run it overnight with the air vent (almost) closed?

I would typically close it down when running overnight. But I never worried about cleaning it out too much. A good bed of ash is important in these, so don’t panic about the holes too much either.
The key thing when it’s new is ease it in gently. Once you’ve got a good bed of ash then the stove starts to perform at its best.

Maybe because i dont use kilndried wood, but i hope its not built only for this.
If you’re getting water down the chimney you might need to look at where or how it’s coming from. Definitely worth lighting the stove to dry things out.
Quick question, did the 602 V2 (the model before this) have the same gasketing system for the reburners?

@@TheTortoiseSorry. You mentioned that the servicing on the Jotul 602 Eco was quite labour intensive. I was curious if you knew if the previous model, the 602 V2 had the same reburning system, and thus the same type of intensive labour requirements.
No it is certainly quite different to the previous model. That probably still has its own intricacies, but it is certainly simpler than the new model.

This stove has a rope around the door, I haven’t used caulking on it?

Looks like Jotul North America is installing catalysts in all their models there. Also a bimetallic secondary air control. Should be interesting.
Yea Vermont Castings have been doing that for a while. Interestingly they’re still capable of long burn times which is amazing.
Looks like most manufacturers here are installing a catalyst to reach the 75% HHV efficiency to obtain the Gov 30% tax rebate.

I had the jotul 105 but it couldn’t be swept because unknown to me it was a reject the installers weren’t interested.they told me I show get a hole put in the flue.
That 602 is pretty ugly looking
This sounds very odd indeed. Jotul aren’t the sort to just send out a dud, is there any more to this?
@@TheTortoise I couldn’t have known about the problem until it was time to be swept out the company who came out couldn’t figure out how to access the flue so took the fire apart from the flue.
This happened the next time with a different sweep he said to get the hole put in the installer was not interested once he had my money(gave him a bad review am afraid to say)
How strange, does sound like the installer hadn’t quite got things right.
I know what you mean about the 602, but I loved it, it was a dream to use.
There was a small batch of Jøtul F105 where the baffle couldn’t be removed easily and had to be cut out. Jøtul replaced the baffle free. Unfortunately some sweeps refused to sweep those for that reason. It was only a small number of stoves in the batch and in truth all should have been swept by now.
I loved the Victoriana look of the 602 - just no room for a stove like that. But if I discover the scope for a She-Shed, it’s in the top 3!
Nah dude, I bought the next size up and basically these are okay for a little workshop a single room that's small but small stoves like this require constant refeeding of wood into them, I love your videos but it's hard to believe that you are recommending such a small stove, rule of thumb get the biggest stove that you can with the most BTU output. It's way too small.
Obviously every stove is size dependent. You want to get the right size ideally, buying the biggest thing can be a mistake just like buying a bus for a small family to use as their daily. All that means is you use more fuel and increase your running costs, but if this is the right size for you then it’s a lovely thing.
Who’s rule and who’s thumb?
To big of a stove and your living space will be uncomfortably hot in the winter. Been there done that.
I love this for our sunroom for winters. We have a large jotul that has a grill insert and it works like a charm.
