This a great intro to the topic of permissions. The most surprising aspect of the SharePoint settings pages is the fact that Microsoft has never tried to update them from their ancient look and feel to something that aligns with the modern SharePoint aesthetic. I wonder if there is a story behind that.

Thanks Daniel. I did follow your explanation 100% and it makes sense. I have found out though that one needs the ‘Premium’ business license to manipulate the permissions. It looks like the standard business version does NOT allow u to change permissions. Is this correct ?
    Thanking u in advance. Martin

Thanks Daniel! This is really helpful. My only question is what permissions need to be changed so that users cannot edit the actual site (top right-hand corner of the site) but would still allow them to contribute to the document libraries within the site?

Good one Daniel! My only gripe when setting this up for clients is that Microsoft doesn’t seem to like blending the modern and classic permission configuration.
At 7:06 you can see that once Contribute rights are manually configured, you are forced to ONLY use the classic Advanced Permissions page, and can no longer add/edit/remove access via the Modern approach. 🙄
It’s a deal breaker in some cases, but advanced SP Admins are happy to wear the trade-off. If you can find a way to preserve the modern permission options, lunch is on me.
