  • Alaska Ranger was a fishing trawler on the way to fishing water near Alaska when the ship started to flood and started sinking rapidly. The mayday message was sent out quickly, but the ship was far away from any rescue teams, and it would take helicopters at least two hours to reach the ship. By this time the ship would have already vanished far beneath the ocean's surface. How long would the 47 man crew cope in the cold water?

    From Wiki; "Of the 47 on board, 42 were rescued. Of the five fatalities, four were recovered dead, and one was never found. The Coast Guard was initially misinformed about the number of persons on board the vessel, and secured the search with one crew member still unaccounted for. After realizing there was still one person missing, the Coast Guard reinstated the search, but did not find the crew member."

      She was lost in 6000 feet of water so it's doubtful she'll be found any time soon.

      There was a program called Mayday: Bering Sea! which covered primarily the rescue aspect (because they didn't know the cause of the sinking at the time) and one of those who died was hoisted up towards the helicopter, but his suit was so full of water that he fell back into the sea just seconds from being pulled into the helicopter. Another one who was lost was the brother of one of the fishermen onboard the Alaska Warrior.

      Yes my cousin Byron Carrillo was one of the five that died that night, being hoisted up towards the helicopter but his suit was filled with water and fell back into the sea RIP

      I was on this illegally owned and registered piece of shit. The morons that converted it at a shipyard in Japan were idiots.
      How do you design a mid-water trawler with no fucking NET REEL?
      This was a straw ownwership with an American shill on paper and with an American captain.
      In reality it was owned by a Japanese company and had a Japanese captain called the "Fish Master" in charge of the operation.
      It was like fishing with the three stooges. I was on it in '92.

    I've been watching a bunch of videos of shipwrecks and I see that there's always confusion and problems when the crew has to put on their life wetsuits. Maybe that process/gear could be improved?

    I've seen the whole dramatic rescue many years ago and I was so mad at the coast guard. They picked up the guys out of the life rafts first and by the time they went to pick the people out of the water, serveral had died.

    • @chuckwagn7866
      @chuckwagn7866 Před 3 lety +24

      I was on one of the CG aircraft there. 5 out of 47 people who went into freezing water in the middle of the night died. Given the time that they were in the water, the weather, and the temp, I expected that number to be much higher. The survivors and debri were scattered in the water over a mile in one of the darkest nights I have flown in. The rafts had strobes on them and were easy to find first. You rescue anyone you can find, because that life raft may not be there when you get back to it. One rescue swimmer even stayed behind in the water with a raft while the full helo left to offload survivors. Not everyone had lights on their person, and were almost impossible to see. Don't be mad at the numerous CG aircrews that risked their lives and against all odds and managed to rescue almost all of the crew. Be mad at why they sunk to begin with, because according to some of the survivor statements, there were some questionable things that happened on that boat that could have played a big role in its sinking.

Certainly the Catastrophic structural failure should be made public knowledge after the Maritime authorities investigate. Maintenance and Seaworthy inspections are in question.
