    I agree with Niall Ferguson about the importance of books, because you use your own imagination instead of a movie director's vision. But for me Audiobooks have taken over, I go on long walks in the mountains while listening.. Audio is the original way of conveying stories - like when we told them around campfires millenia ago.

    • @6Diego1Diego9
      @6Diego1Diego9 Před 10 měsíci

      Audio books are easier to consume but you won't learn as well or remember the content the same as reading. They cater to people like you who want to feel learned but are too lazy to read.

    Thank you both for an informative hour... Most worthwhile and since i'm listening well after the hamas massacre i found his predictive observations to be beautifully well founded...
    And i'm also pretty sure... that notwithstanding his nostalgia for amateur Scots rugby players... he thoroughly enjoyed watching England being thumped at Murrayfield in their defence of their weekend (feb26, '24) Calcutta cup... even though it was one of our national rejects that scored the hat trick... Itself a demonstration of the historical futility of discriminatory legislation.

    While my brother played 'soccer' (we're Canadians so don't judge us too harshly!) from 5 year old league to university level, we always loved rugby since my late mother's first cousin was Mrs. Ronnie Lamont. (I don't expect our host to recognize that name I very much DO expect Mr Ferguson to!) Alas my eyesight wasn't up to it (and it was before the days of soft contact lenses so despite having a good build to play I couldn't) I've read 7 or 8 of Ferguson's books and while I don't agree with all his conclusions definitely found this a good use of an hour or so!

    Niall Ferguson, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, discusses various topics in this conversation. He proposes renaming "artificial intelligence" to "inhuman intelligence" to reflect the non-human nature of artificial intelligence. Ferguson considers his decision to become a historian and his grandfather's influence on his life. He also discusses the limitations of artificial intelligence when it comes to comprehending human behavior and emotions. Ferguson also discusses the lack of social mobility despite the internet's accessibility to information, which he hypothesizes is due to the rise of elitism.

    I think childhood educational inequality(not so much raw teaching & learning intake/curriculum) in terms of familial/community values or the absence of values is a huge factor, if you can learn on the internet but whenever you do all your intimate communal relationships I.e. school mates or neighbors(people your basically stuck with inside the system) discourage your unorthodox learning or just learning in general that will stunt growth, crime within the systems is also a factor, but more so lack of values & antiquated orthodox values of formal paths sociologically enforced upon people who are not necessarily fit for that along with any deviation being mocked among other more malevolent social responses really does a number on people who care about who there around, relatively poor(in the west) immigrant’s or Jews still do extremely well while being poor, I don’t think that’s a accident instead a value for hard work & education in general. The “don’t be white” (meaning stay in your economic box) phenomenon in the African American communities is a example of this, tall poppy syndrome is real within communities with impoverished super-structures.

    There is evidence that books are not only here to stay, but a growing business. According to Mark P Mills (The Cloud Revolution), book sales continue to grow while e-book sales have stagnated. Perhaps there really is something special about the book as a design that best fits a need and preference. I remember many pundits predicting that the book would be obsolete by now. To use Niall's vernacular, this is a mug's game. Will AI change this at some point? I doubt it. There is no sign that AI will alter the face-to-face teaching paradigm, at least if Covid lockdown is an indicator. The facts are clear: learning via Zoom was a dismal failure. Will it get better? Who knows? One thing about people is, human intelligence is not even vaguely like AI and it's not like we don't know this. Books just may be the preferred way to "read" and learn, along with first rate teachers. The former are fecund; the latter are the endangered species. I doubt if AI can fix this mismatch; it's up to sentient beings, like us. AI is not an answer to human failing; it is an answer to human limitation. There is a big difference.
