  • I unbox and use the JessEm Doweling Jig Master Kit. Is this tool worth the price? Should I have bought a Festool Domino instead? What do you think? Comment below.

    Finally a CZcams video that uses this properly (clamp back-to-back and use alignment slot)! People try to use a pencil mark, which will end up hidden, and say the tool is designed poorly. No pencil marks needed. This jig is accurate and fast.

      Yup. When used as designed it's a fantastic jig. Quick, easy, accurate. Well worth the price. Thanks for watching.

      I noticed the same thing, this made it a lot faster and easier to use. I've been back and forth about this or the dowelmax, I don't do many miters to justify the extra costs plus the different dowel blocks needed. It can easily be $500 which is more than double this. Now that I've seen this video I think I'll go with jessum

    Excellent instructional video, Matt -- this one and the two others you've made on the JessEm.
    By the way, I have both the Dowelmax and the JessEm, and invariably I reach for the JessEm when I need to do any dowelling. The Dowelmax is equally accurate and beautifully machined, but it requires using, and even making, spacers for joining varying wood thicknesses, and that gets to be a time consuming, fiddly, frustrating business if your wood doesn't conform to Dowelmax's design assumptions. With the JessEm, you just loosen the thumb screw, move the stop to the right clearance, tighten down and go. The fiddly nature of working with spacers for non 2-by or 3/4" wood caused me finally to order the JessEm kit, and I'm glad I did. There is, however, absolutely nothing wrong with the Dowelmax if you only work with two or three English standard wood thicknesses.

      That's one aspect of using the Dowelmax I don't believe I've heard before. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    Great overview and demo, thanks!
    While there are dozens of doweling jigs on the market, really, only this one and the dowelmax are worth the investment. They cost a bit more up front, but you save so much in time and accuracy in the long run. I went through the same decision about a year ago and decided on the dowelmax, mainly for the integrated clamps. Zero regrets; it's an amazing, precision tool, as I'm sure the jessem is. Even owing the dowelmax, I am still a bit intrigued with the jessem. Curiosity may get the best of me and I may end up buying a jessem to compare to my dowelmax. It would make for a great video at least lol
    I like your style of presentation,keep it up. 🙂

      I had to add another reply to this. A buddy of mine recently got a cheap, $50 or so, dowel jig from Amazon. It is total garbage and causing him nothing but problems. Misaligned holes make the jig useless. Quality tools cost more for a reason.

    I just ordered the same kit and got it yesterday. Of all the tools I've bought over the years with blow molded cases, this doweling jig kit needs one more than most. I did get a cool free carpenter pencil though, so I've got that going for me.

    This looks like such a great tool and you did a great job of presenting it. I'm a beginning woodworker and I'm going to be building an end table soon. I was planning on doing pocket screws with a Kreg jig and know that would probably be easiest but I want to do dowels now! I'm not sure if you said in the video but how thick was the cedar that you joined together, 3/4" or 4/4 and what size dowels did you use, 1/4"? Again, great video, liked and subscribed.

    • @MattMadeIt123
      @MattMadeIt123  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for the comment and sub. Appreciate it. The cedar was 3/4, and I used 1/4 dowels. Generally, a dowel 1/3 the size of your material is a good rule of thumb.

  • @stevesiefken6432

    Great review! So, once you get ready to drill, it looks like it is up to the user to ensure the jig doesn’t move, i.e., there are no clamps to hold secure. Is that right? If so, how much of an issue is this? Thanks!

    • @MattMadeIt123
      @MattMadeIt123  Před rokem +3

      There is room to clamp it if you wish, but I've never needed to. Holding the jig tight to the wood face is easy enough. Just drill one side where you want them, reference off that first hole, and you're good to go.

    How tight were the dowels in the dowel holes? I saw you needed a hammer to “persuade” them…

    • @MattMadeIt123
      @MattMadeIt123  Před rokem +2

      I probably could have pushed them in by hand, but it would have been difficult. Some dowels will be tighter than others. Depends on the manufacturer.

    I bought this over the dowelmax because of 1) price (dowelmax can easily milk you $500 for full set. It's nice but not $500 nice) 2)too many small pieces of the dowelmax I could misplace in the future.

    • @MattMadeIt123
