Danielle Urton I love Julie Andrews. In every video I see with her I see your comment. Where I live people don't really appreciate Julie. It is good to know that somewhere, tough far away are people to which I could talk to... Thanks. P.S. I love your profile picture :)

Weirdly instructive. Camp such an elusive, gossamer thing to pull off. In a TV studio,, without live audience interraction, over-rehearsed for the cameras, camp ecomes near-impossible. The incomparable Dame Julie (with whom I once had the lifetime-high honour to dine) had OFFstage a rip-roaringly salty and theatrical sense of humour. She well knew the success, and the prison, of her onstage persona, which was founded upon a flawess training and bomb-proof technique. She knew that that persona was OF ITSELF camp. Had she delivered the number 'straight', as Maria von Trapp say, with seriousness, never interposing her knowingness between absolute belief iin the truth of what she is saying and the audience, it might just have carried. But trying to ACT explicitly camply, posing be it ever so slightly exaggeratedly, fluttering her eyelashes, she somehow falls short. So inescapably pretty is she, so subconsciously well does she sing, so exquisite and natural is her smile, that she could plausibly BE a fairy queen. We have no reason to doubt her. Bea Lillie, grotesque by comparison, vocally horrid, far less polished, nailed the joke. The irreplaceable Dame Julie breaks the butterfly on the wheel..

As much as I like Julie Andrews, this pales in comparison with the version by Beatrice Lillie.

Are you serious? Beatrice Lillie was atrocious!! Gross! She can't sing.

Lucia Rose Tell us everything you know. I'll give you five seconds, which should be sufficient.

I listened to a version of this Lilly you speak of and it was so nasal sounding and not clear as a bell like Julie. Julie had amazing technique. It's too bad they butchered her surgery due to vocal nodes. She could have recovered naturally from that instead of going through a dangerous procedure. The vocal cords are very delicate. It's a 6 month recovery the natural way or maybe even longer depending; it includes no singing and very little talking if any at all.

Lucia Rose I know what stupidity. all she needed was vocal rest and/or singing as she used to do her scales as a kid. She would have recovered without any knife action.

+Lucia Rose Julie's vocal placement is really good too, which she lost as she started to sing lower than her chords were designed to handle.
