- Did you guys know one of the reasons it's called the DS is because it has dual screens? Crazy, unreal, movie.

Psycopaths who played DS with their screen cracked all the way back like this 5:35 💀💀💀
I always had (and still with my 3DS) my top screen in the slightly leaning towards me position as the leaning back one felt and looked awkward and felt like it would break easily…
Jokes on you my hinge broke a few months after I got it (also yes mine was a black ds lite)
I mean, shoot, I played the DS like that after like....4 years? 5? I guess I just ended up finding it more efficient.
💀☠️☠️☠️☠️
it might've been more practical on the original models, idk
Those who didn’t grow up in the 2000’s will never understand how much of an impact the DS had on our childhood
I grew up in the 2000s and I didn't have a DS, only a GBA. I just remember really wanting a DS and always being denied it...
The design was ok. Honestly nintendos game and ui design is why they have such a large fan base, I had memorable times playing Mario and sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. Also the graphics weren’t bad at the time.
@@Michirin9801 that sucks man! Do you remember the reason, was it money or something else, i hope u got around to playing a ds. If not get in contact with me and I’ll help you aquire a ds aka pay for it. Greetings from Germany
@@Thescrubsliker I got a 3DS in 2013 and have since been able to properly play DS games that way, so don't worry about that...
Or even the future for that matter. The DS walked and ran so that the Wii U and switch could even be possible. So many things are attributable to Nintendo during this time that it is quite literally a staple in people’s lives
I remember taking a very long flight once as a kid with my DS. Came to find that the Japanese kid sitting behind me also had one on him. Even though we did not speak the same language whatsoever, we ended up playing new super Mario bros together that whole flight. One of my favorite memories ever
That’s actually so magical 😭
That's so wholesome :)
That just shows how great the ds was .
New Super Mario bros was the quintessential game to have on there
and mario kart ds
This was the first Mario game I ever played. I had a Gamecube and PS1/2 before this and I thought “Mario was for nerds, sonic is cool.” My friend download played this with me and I fell in love. New Super Mario Bros was the best introduction to that series I could’ve ever had.
@@Chris.Batchelor that and 3D Land were my introduction to Mario.
Yep first game I got with my ds, one of my favourite Mario games for sure def my fave 2d one
Zelda with the Stylus was a horrifyingly poor decision...
I will never forgot the day when the DS first premiered at E3. Reggie called it the "sexiest" gaming console produced and a bunch of hot girls in skimpy short shorts walked on stage each presenting a DS. Early 2000s was wild.
Lol nintendo would NEVER do this today lmao
edgy nintendo era >>>
And skimpy Lara Croft cosplay at old E3 I think. Good old times.
And skimpy Lara Croft cosplay at old E3 I think. Good old times.
@@junilog that's not edgy
It feels so strange seeing 2000s kids (people my age) make video essays now but it's super cool to see a shared experience. The ds was my childhood. I had a psp at some point but I always just prefered the ds. Nowadays I have gained a lot of respect for the psp though, it is a really great system too.
sigh... you dang 2000s zoomers....
*grandpa voice*: why back in muh day we grew up with gameboy and Snes mario world and Donkey kong while listening to Britney spears! lol
@@heyjeySigma Trust me we feel old too 😭
Just wait til you feel old when the youngins start make wii u and PS4 retrospectives 😭😭😭
Agreed. I was born in 96, but let's be honest, you don't really start to remember things until you're like 3-5. Hell, long term, I think we forget most stuff until we're like 7 or 8. But man, that DS Lite I got in 2009 was awesome. And then promptly traded in a few months later at GameStop for a DSi, lmao. Being able to play the games on the go was great. Especially when every summer my brother and I would head with our parents to see family on the other side of the US, which took 5 hours to fly. Many times we'd play Mario Kart DS or the minigames on New Super Mario Bros. I think I probably played the Wii more overall, but the DS is such a good console. I know the Switch has better games and has better hardware (obviously), but it's just missing stuff from the DS era. Imagine if Mario Kart 8 Deluxe let you do Download Play near anyone with a Switch. That would've been amazing. But nope.
@@meowmasterL346 I mean, there's already wii u retrospectives lol
Let's not forget that the DS was the device that made many people more comfortable with touch screen devices. This helped people more easily adapt to the eventual release of the iPhone and the Smartphone Era of Tech.
I got an i pod touch for christmas after a couple of years of playing ds and for like a solid 4 days I would only use my finger nails and be so confused why it was barely working
@@joshsheler7036 yeah, they are different touchscreen technologies.
Having an Action Replay back in the day was like having superpowers
It was really fun, especially cheats that let you explore out of bounds! A little annoyed I used mine on several Pokémon saves though. I still have the memories, but the files aren't as nostalgic as they could have been otherwise!
I got a hand-me-down DS Lite as my first ever console for Christmas in 2011 and that thing practically made my childhood. It's popularity during the early 2010s was so unmatched that you'd be more likely to be called a liar if you told someone that you didn't have a DS than if you actually lied about having one.
I didn’t had a DS, but I did have a 3DS since 2012 so does that count?
@@traviscunningham7062 the 3DS was more of its own beast but it's definitely valid in it's own right too! i actually lost my DS Lite sometime around 2014 but I ended up getting a 2DS for Christmas of that same year so I have major nostalgia for the 3DS like too :)
I had a dsi or I still have a dsi
i remember i got a pink ds lite for my birthday and literally every single kid on my bus to school had a DS
and every single day on the way to school we would run mario kart matches with the whole bus
good memories
This is statistically highly inaccurate.
Man there was nothing quite like the first time I pulled an all nighter playing those New Super Mario Bros DS mini games with Luigi on my DSi when I was really young.
That’s something you can never experience again.
I've been waiting about 3 months for some free time just to play that lol. It's the little things
Drugs
I blamd Luigi for my gambling addiction.
I blamd Luigi for my gambling addiction.
The greatest handheld of all time. Keep blessing us with these bangers, and we'll keep watching.
I prefer the 3DS.
@@traviscunningham7062 Still counts!
Absolutely. It’s the ps2 of handhelds. So many gems from that time. Kirby superstar ultra was my first game on it & im forever thankful for that experience
I remember a buddy in elementary school who had thier top screen completely removed, connected only by the exposed wires powering it. I watched him play scribblenaughts every morning on the bus ride to school, that thing lasted for AGES
The DS Lite definitely holds a special place in my heart. Aside from all the great games you could play on it, I have one of my favorite childhood memories associated with it. I had saved up $120 by myself as an 11-year-old and bought a white DS Lite with it. I took it to school and someone stole it out of my locker, and when my older brothers found out about this, they pooled their money together and got me a black DS Lite as a replacement. I played that thing to death and took it pretty much everywhere with me. Great memories and a great video, thanks for the nostalgia!
I actually got stuck for a few years as a kid in Bowser’s Inside Story in the Flab Zone. I didn’t realize the bump/pimple thing you where supposed to hammer to learn the spin jump could be interacted with. I thought it was just a part of the environment since it was in front of a platform….
i legit shared the exact same experience, that’s so crazy
I got legit stuck for years over the giga carrot game. And got stuck a solid few months over wisdurm boss. Today I clear them both first try. Crazy
Ah, the DS. Truly one of the most remarkable consoles ever.
Keep one making these great videos! I hope you end up getting the recognition you deserve!
In some ways, the Nintendo DS is like the "Good Future" version of the Sega Dreamcast's story. In both cases, their creators were basically spurred into action by sheer terror of Sony's reputation. Sega hoped to reclaim a foothold in the console realm before the PS2 arrived; Nintendo feared the GBA wouldn't cut it when Sony entered the handheld arena that they had basically had to themselves for a while. They each arrived after their predecessors had been on the market for a surprisingly short amount of time (with how prominent the Game Boy Advance was, it's so weird to think it spent a little more than 3 years as Nintendo's top dog of the handheld world).
While the Dreamcast was a tragedy despite genuinely impressive effort, with the DS, Nintendo took their already-thriving handheld presence to another level, in spite of tough competition from the PSP.
Ah yes the R4.
To this day I never owned a single retail game for my ds, but the R4's were nice. (Also you could actually connect to nintendo's official wi-fi servers on this thing, kinda insane lol.)
I never owned one but one of my classmates (still a good friend to this day) had/has one and we played alot of games together on it.
Here on Latin America there's a 0.01 chances of 1,000,000 that you don't own an R4 card (even the ones that never got a ds and got a 3ds like me) i mean here on latin America everyone has bought at least 1 pirate stuff, a pirate movie, a pirate toy, or one PS2 that you bought modded (yes PS2 here every single one of those mostly was bought with a mod chip mostly matrix or toxic)
Funny you mentioned that the Phantom Hourglass was not a great game to start the Zelda series, it was the first Zelda game I ever played and got hooked instantaneously to it, taking to look for more games of the franchise, now I'm a big fan because of it
Same ahahahah
And sure I know the touch screen controls put a lot of hardcore zelda fans off but I actually kinda like it I mean sure it would've been nice to have an option to use the Dpad for basic movement but I don't mind it also I really like how you can draw maps in the game I wish more zelda games do that aside from Spirit Tracks
I got a DSi XL for Christmas when I was 9, and man I'm so glad I was able to experience such a console. It was home to my first ever Pokémon game (Pokémon Diamond), MarioKart DS, New Super Mario Bros., and a horde of Nintendogs games. I'd pay anything to relive the joy upon playing those games for the first time.
I remember sobbing when my dad told me that we were headed to the game store to get me a DS lite. Every single child in my school had one. If you didn't have a DS you missed out on most socializing. There was a solid 18 months where I spent every waking second of free time I had as a 9 year old playing/using my DS.
My first console was a 2ds. I remember bringing it to preschool (yes I’m that young) and I was the coolest kid there. The only game I had was Lego Batman because nobody ever got me any games. My step mom threw it away about 5 years ago and I’m still mad. I’m so sad I must put on that much nostalgia 😭
Got a PSP in 2006 which I loved dearly but as soon as I got the DS I basically used it exclusively lol
The nostalgia i got from this video was insane. Some of my favourite childhood memories were spending hours wondering around Pokemon Platinum and playing nintendogs with my 3 siblings and the first time I got my DS and Pokemon Black! The DS, DSi and 3DS have yet to be beat for me!
Even though I have a 3DS I still love playing my DS games, it's just too good!
Great video! One thing that wasn’t stated in this video was that by dropping the “gameboy” name Nintendo was able to advertise to girls. Nintendog and Pokemon were massive hits and I remember the girls in my elementary school class playing them a ton. It’s interesting because their gaming typically didn’t go beyond the Ds and I partly think thats because other consoles didn’t market games towards girls. Also you didn’t mention the best DS game of all time The World Ends With You!!!
Love your covering the original model like it was some kind of ancient relic, but for me, it was always people's little brothers who got Lites. Me and all my friends had the fat version.
A lot Ds games just give me so much nostalgia. While for myself, we had a DS lite which my family shared, but later I got a 2ds for myself, most games I played on it were original DS games. New Super Mario Bros was one of the first ever video game I played and the first one I loved. Me and my sisters have probably spent way to much time with that games multi-player. I still remember my first time playing lego star wars the complete saga ds for the first time, completely freaking out because as a child I didn't understand how to use my lightsaber. One day my mom brought home a copy of the first professor layton game, which didn't have a case because she apparently got it from a colleague at work, and me asking her for help with almost every puzzle, being interested in the games story. And over time, I got all the rest of the games. Even though I'm younger than most people who grew up with a DS, I'm also really nostalgic for games on the DS.
Your videos continue to impress me. I found your channel only when you had two videos and your format is really nice to watch.
Thank you for the kind words! Hope you’ll be tuning in for all the vids to come
Great work on these. The videos are nothing revolutionary but you just remind me of things I'm nostalgic about. I appreciate them.
Great video, just in time because I started playing again with my old DS two months ago!
Can confirm the OG DS comment that no one around had it. I bought it the week of release but legit didn't see many OG DS' around until the Lite released and the floodgates opened! Great video!
I really enjoy your videos. You're putting out a lot of great content pretty quickly.
To be candid, it's helpful to understand how a younger generation sees and experiences games (I say this, because the experience you're having with the DS is similar to mine on GameBoy Color and GBA).
I think your articulate yourself well and have an awareness that many other creators lack.
You've got that comedic timing down, too. Keep it up!
2:50 actually I believe that’s a misconception, the item stat actually determines how many mushrooms you get at the start of a time trial (which is why you only see the stat be at three different levels, for 1-3 mushrooms respectively)
it is a very common misconception, the only things that affect what items you can get are your position and how many players are in the room. (and that one special item box in DK Pass where it thinks you are always in last place i guess)
new KoKerm video hype! also, congrats on 3k!
This is my first time watching a video from your channel and as someone who grew up with this wonderful handheld console you’ve really captured this moment in time for all of us 2000s kids. Keep it up you’ve earned a sub from a fellow Aussie
Great video! Keep posting more content like this 🙏🏼🙏🏼
how does this have so little views, this is such a good video and an amazing retrospective on the DS as a whole
Thanks for the video! Your videos are super well made, I wish your channel success 👍
Thank you for the video, you have gained a new subscriber!
Great video, I think you should keep making more videos.
I still have my lime green DS. Super princess peach and yoshi’s island DS were truly my lifeblood. if you could’ve heard my squeal when you used a clip at the beginning! Great video
My first DS was a DSI. My mom bought it for me along with an R4 card that came with about 30 games built in. To this day, that console and the 3DS I got later are still some of my favourite consoles
huge fan of your videos man, definitely underrated content! keep up the good work :)
Bro please keep making videos I’ve been scrolling through so many recommended Nintendo and video game related videos and yours are by far the best please keep it up
Great video. You deserve way more views and subscribers
loved my dsi with my whole heart, and i’m so glad you mentioned nintendogs bc that was one of my favs along with pokémon black/white, cooking mama, and other various puzzle games. i was obsessed with the princess isabella: a witch’s curse series
Your videos makes me happy
The DS was my childhood. Awesome video, thanks!
And yes, flashcards were a complete gamechanger. I got myself an M3DSreal when I was about 12 and it changed EVERYTHING. It introduced me to so many games and franchises that I still love to this day
Getting a ds with an r4 was pretty much mandatory here in brazil
@film fan we didnt have games over here, and when we did they would cost half the cost of the ds, which was inflated to be around 500usd here around 2008-2010
@film fan for sure, nowadays i use it a lot to play romhacks too!
I got a $20 garage sale DS lite when I was younger. It came with a few third party games and a Japanese Pokémon game, either platinum, diamond, or pearl. One day the hinge broke and then the cartridge slot stopped reading games, it was probably just dirty. I didn't appreciate the console much because I never played multiplayer with anyone, I couldn't figure out how to get the WiFi working on it, I never got any games other than what it came with, and I thought the "lite" naming meant it was a trial version or a downgraded version because I played a lot of free "lite" games on my mum's laptop. I tore it apart and it became landfill. I deeply regret that now.
Half a year ago I got a $50 op shop DSi XL and now I'm playing all the games I wished I could play back then. It sucks I missed out on the peak of the console's popularity.
First video I’ve seen from you and damn bro, you smashed it out of the park!
Great video 👌
Great video man keep it up
Great video, keep it up!
The DS was my second handheld console, and it's safe to say I still have fun playing it today - even if it isn't popular now. This might fascinate you: someone recreated New Super Mario Bros' versus mode, and made it playable online, with about up to 8 players. It's an insane experience, I highly suggest you check it out. Other than that, thanks for taking us through a nostalgic trip on one of Nintendo's greatest selling handhelds.
Just subbed man. The DS was a banger console. Keep it up!
The DSi was the first console I ever owned, and Mario Kart DS was the fisrt game I ever played and I still play it to this day. I have so much nostalgia for it.
Other than the little Family Guy skits, loving your videos so far, thank you. c:
Fire vid bro good job
Dude, this made me so nostalgic!
Such a great video and retrospective on the DS. It wasn’t my first console I had to myself, my first being the Gameboy Color, but I never really cared about the GBC like I did the DS. I was 12 when I got mine on Christmas of 2004 and I was absolutely hooked, a few years later when I found out about flash cards like the R4 I became even more hooked now that I could get any game I wanted for the price of one. I was a member of couple DS modding/hacking forums and am still friends with a handful of the people I met on them to this day. The DS definitely shaped my teen years quite a bit and I still look back on it fondly, I still have my OG Grey Brick DS and a flash card in case there’s ever a game I’m looking to play again and although that time hasn’t arose yet, I’ll never get rid of it.
Very good video, I really cant remember how much times I lost the stylus. I'm guessing around 20 times.
homebrew and cheat cartridge's were so cool. It was like putting illegal imported parts on a car to me when i was young lol
bless u for bringing up the r4 cartridge
I did an entire project on the DS. I miss it so much. This entire video was just 12 minutes of new nostalgia I forgot about shoved into my brain and I’m so grateful
Mario kart was also my first game on the DS too
Mario kart ds might still be my favorite entry. I had Wii at the time too but very rarely had the tv to myself so I just played those tracks endlessly. I picked it up after 15 years and it’s still muscle memory
6:46 same, i even got the light blue as replacement as well😂
Great retrospective.
11:00 this was legit me with Mario & Sonic Winter Olympics last year
One of my favourite memories was playing Mario Kart DS over local on coach journeys with friends.
I would definitely recommend giving phantom hourglass another honest shake. Ofc the control scheme takes EVERYONE some getting used to, but you can do it and it plays just fine. Obviously they did it to give us analogue movement on the ds and thats something Ive grown to appreciate
I had 8 cousins. We loved to boot up Mario Kart DS together for local multiplayer at Grandma’s house. The 3DS took it up a notch with Smash 4 3DS.
5:00 creepiness aside I think it’s cool how the purple squares look like the intro for the GameCube, but two, bc two screens
the nintendo ds startup sound at the start gave me goosebumps
6:45 Me too! My Black DS lite broke randomly. You could definitely tell the build quality wasn't as good as the original version.
Really nice video dude 👌
This, and the Wii are nostalga overload.
this video has me reminiscing about my 30+ hours in lego star wars:TCS, (which i still haven’t finished, because flying missions are the bane of my existence) and getting trouble for writing curse words in pictochat during study hall, glorious times
Your black Nintendo DS breaking theory actually just sparked some memories I'd forgotten about. Also Mario party DS is the best Mario party
I remember always bringing my DS to school and just playing mario 64 those were such great times
Black DS Lite + Professor Layton and the Curious Village + Pokemon Diamond = Bliss
I’d give anything to go back to my childhood in the DS/3DS and Wii days
Mario Kart DS was fire to me! I remember having that game when I got my ds in Christmas 2005. Crazy how a lot of people didn't see the og model in person I already knew people with the og ds model in 2005.
Another awesome video yuh yuh
This took me back omg
The days of ds and the chat room on school excursions or on the bus with mates
Dude this console slapped hard
I till this day also play on the 3ds xl, it was such a cool upgrade to the ds
I’m 24 and now all these consoles getting old makes me feel old but we had a fun childhood man
Bussin
I had AND STILL HAVE the old “clunky” ds AND it’s the limited edition red mario one! I’d love to send you a pic of it haha
Pokémon Diamond and New Super Mario Bros was my childhood. I’ll always have memories playing my DS
The DS was my childhood. Also ya outro song I've listened to for years
I think R4-type cartridges were a game-changer for people that had limited access to the broader selection of Nintendo games, whether due to remoteness or financial reasons. I buy a lot of games now that I can afford them, there are eShops, and there's regional pricing on platforms like Steam, but back when I was growing up, finding physical copies of very good but very niche titles just wasn't possible.
I still have my pink DS Lite!! Ah the memories!
Growing up in the 2000s I remember owning a Nintendo DS and new Super Mario Bros DS, Super Mario 64. DS and Mario kart DS were the gods of my childhood along with Spider-Man 3, Transformers and other movie tie-in games!
I can't believe I just watched a whole video on the DS and the dude only got halfway through emerald. That's nutty, the ds had probably the best pokemon game lineup of any console
Black & White were the first main Pokémon games to have a fleshed out story (Colosseum was the true first, but that’s not a main series title)
One of the best times of my life was playing Elite Beat Agents and Mushroom Men that one month in Germany... Great days
Having an older brother, I was used to “sharing” all of our consoles and games, but de DS was the first time I ever had my own console. I was one of those weirdos who had the “original” first edition of the DS, it used to be my brother’s before he got a black DS Lite for his birthday. But I think it might’ve been too great of a responsibility for a 7 year old to have, as I vividly remember the day I dropped my DS in the toilet just a few months after having it passed down to me :))) Ahh, such fond memories…
Mario party ds is my favorite behind 6! Great game! Spent so much time on it
The Nintendo DS, that thing and the Wii were my childhood, I remember my white DS lite I had, and later got a red mario anniversary addition DSiXL, alot of good memories playing with my cousin on our DS's, losts of memories, good times, nostalgia.
i was a rural kid and on my bus to school every single kid had a DS, and every single day we would play mario kart 7 to and from school, I remember the whole bus screaming and laughing, i remember when i found out about holding accelerate when the countdown hit 2 gives you a boost and how i was dominating all my games after that.
it was truly some of the best memories i have, i don’t have my original pink DS lite that i got for my 6th birthday or something like that but i still do currently have a 3Dds I got for maybe my 10th or 11th birthday?
crazy to think i’m turning 18 this year. Time flies
I got my DSi in 2009 and wow-how! Almost R4 years later it’s still working lovely😌
One of the best things was in like 2011, I was at the airport and there was this other kid, he had a DS too, somehow we got talking and found out we both had Pokemon games so we battled and traded, still have some of the pokemon on my old save file! I agree 100% with never seeing the original model of the DS, I only saw it when I bought it years after. These things were the best for school trips, small enough that teachers and parents didn't immediately go "aha you took your DS" (there was always a no electronics rule) and we did exactly what you mentioned, I was the kid with Mario Party DS and my buddy was the kid with Mario Kart nothing beat spending 3 hours after bedtime playing these games. To this day the pokemon center night theme gives me chills due to how much my brother and I spent in the pokemon center trading and battling in the evening.
Did anyone else get stuck really badly in pokemon ranger? I swear it took me years to get past the water part.
Literally what the DS was all about, that is so awesome 🔥
Surprised you didn't mention Streetpass as it motivated me to bring the DS everywhere I went.
My black DS was built different. It alongside Pokémon Diamond survived sitting under a Bush for an entire winter and most of spring, and when I found it both of them still worked. Still have that Diamond cartridge today
