    The positive takeaway is that as fierce and the rivalries and the trash talk can get, none of the teams want to see their colleagues get hurt and they all worry about each other.

    I love that it's a team with many teams and they all come together when stuff like this happens nobody wants anyone to get hurt I agree with that and I like seeing all the boats out there so I hope that everyone comes together to get this corrected and they get them ready for racing tomorrow. Many move mountains so I'd love to see a miracle that gets them back out there. So happy Noone got hurt. That alone is a miracle. 💜

    Carbon fiber, compressive loads and stress cycles. Maybe a manufacturing defect but I think probably not. Same scenario as Titan submersible. Carbon fiber under compression probably needs to be thrown out after a certain number of cycles.

      i doubt, a fatigue failure would happen closer to the limit of the wing desing, (higher wind and during a bearaway) this looks more like a bad reassembly or some rubbing happening somewhere!

    • @HotakaPeter
      @HotakaPeter Před 11 měsíci

      @@olivierleduc7305 Good point, however I would make two points. 1) these wings are depowered to balance with available stability, so I do not expect the loading varies that much. 2) Maybe a fitting failure? Broken shackle or something? I do not think the kiwis would make a mistake setting up the rig.

      Some of the components from the wing used in Singapore were used in the new wing, however the components that broke in the second element of the wing were new components from wing 11.

    Remember the wing is a three piece, with the mid section removable according to the wind conditions expected…..all conjecture at this stage, but a join section could prove to be the weak link in the overall integrity of the complete unit ….. the investigation will be interesting for sure, crucial to have the teams able to trust the wing strength.

    We armchair structural engineers recently learned much about carbon fiber compression load limitations and failures from all the excellent analysis of the Titan sub implosion.

    • @weatheranddarkness
      @weatheranddarkness Před 11 měsíci +5

      Definitely hope this isn't indicative of a systemic failure of the design. Wouldn't want to see a whole series of these as the boats age up to the same point. Any number of possible causes. Just glad the top section didn't land vertically on the crew, that coulda been bloody.

      It looks like they would have had about a second or so before the wing was at their head level, and the boat was pitching. Seems like there was no time to react. Damn lucky it fell well away from them, could have be awful to have that sharp carbon fiber coming at them.

      @bukwok Před 11 měsíci +1

      i dont think halo in sail boat is good thing ,looks they get in and out switching sides all the time , and if sailboat capsize that make the situation even worse , moto racing or sailing sports always have risk ,and every accident is different ,sometimes just luck, so just learn from every accidents , and try improve the safety , rest of just luck ,make better helmet or oxygen tank that kind of gear..? i guess,?
      im not a sailboat guy, dont know that kind of thing happened a lot or very rare , if it happen all the time , maybe make it safer to break ,control how to fail in certain way ?? like car steering rod.

  • @tristankiddie1710
    @tristankiddie1710 Před 11 měsíci +1

    The main question... are there spare parts like i recall Coutts saying a season or so ago that their would be. Otherwise, take Canada's wing, they have no show and caused a crash which damaged boats. Black flag them and get the kiwis back out

    • @SailGP
      @SailGP  Před 11 měsíci +1

      We would normally have a spare wing on site but unfortunately due to a number of unforeseen damage incidents earlier this year the replacement wing has only recently been finished in New Zealand.

    • @SailGP
      @SailGP  Před 11 měsíci +1

      The Canadian wing has been assigned to the Canadian team and we cannot allocate that to another team unless the Canadians caused the damage, which in this case they didn’t. Teams are racing for Season points and the Canadians should not be penalised for the unfortunate damage that occurred on the New Zealand boat.

    • @tristankiddie1710
      @tristankiddie1710 Před 11 měsíci +1

      @SailGP Well I hope you get better at keeping enough spares. It's pathetic that the kiwis will now stand to lose a big chunk of point because of a lack of spares. Had they crashed or capsized and caused the damage, that's racing. But such a major structural failure, maybe all the wings need to be fully inspected with ultrasound before any more racing occurs.

    • @zoepaulastrassfield2664
      @zoepaulastrassfield2664 Před 11 měsíci +1

      So Canada could get Japan’s whole boat and spot in the league for the past season and a half but we couldn’t take away their wing for one day?

    • @tristankiddie1710
      @tristankiddie1710 Před 11 měsíci

      @SailGP so in short, a failure beyond NZ's control in the product provided by the league should cost them a large amount of points, while they are currently in a very competitive position at the top of the table. But Canada, who performed a professional foul and caused damage to another boat are allowed to keep going to get just a couple of points.
