wouldn't it be better to put the topping lift or halyard to the block and tacklet to support the middle of the boom were the weight is?
This was a 42 foot boat so the boom was pretty substantial. On a smaller boat tying a loop in the yellow line about 10 feet from the float and attaching the main halyard to that works well. Keeps the boom out of the way. Just haul up the halyard like your raising a sail. Just make sure your confident in the rigging. Moving the topping lift to the middle of the boom might work but it could take a couple minutes to rig it and it's another step. Try it and see how it works.
Has anyone considered this as a rescue plan out of a trench with an SRL and davit arm in construction? Thoughts please.
