- A Perfect Circle - Orestes with lyrics
In the Homeric story, Orestes was a member of the doomed house of Atreus. Orestes was absent from Mycenae when his father, Agamemnon, returned from the Trojan War with the Trojan princess Cassandra as his concubine, and thus not present for Agamemnon's murder by his wife, Clytemnestra, in retribution for his sacrifice of their daughter Iphigeneia to obtain favorable winds during the Greek voyage to Troy. Eight years later, Orestes returned from Athens and with his sister Electra avenged his father's death by slaying his mother and her lover Aegisthus. - Hudba
I need to listen to this song 3 times to fully experience it. Once for lyrics, again for instrumentals, third time to combine the two
Agreed
You just like living in the moment of this song, that’s what I call living man. Hope you’re still doing the same things 5 years later.
same here mate
@@lilmacfarlan3 still am lol
I guess Im kinda off topic but do anybody know a good site to watch newly released tv shows online ?
Orestes is part of Greek mythology. After the Trojan war Orestes father returns home and is murdered by his wife's new lover. Orestes is away and thus unable to prevent his fathers death (metaphor for a missing moment). He is conflicted and spends several years away before returning home and avenging his father. He kills both his mother and get lover. The Greek myth is about a failing household.
PiniataMurderer Oh my I just want love peace prosperity of all that I love.. everything is so complicated with Justice responsibility and Love triangulated... I have faith in God my true love of all time the man whom I prayed and show my inner Soul
Thanks for explaining it to the likely masses that didn't know the tale and were probably confused by the Grecian artworks in the video 😂
I think this song is about the parallels between the Greek myth and that of his own life when he had to make the decision to release his mother from her suffering.
Close. Orestes missed opportunity is that he didnt get to kill him himself. He took her life later ad a sense of duty and retribution. That kill was to be his, she hadn't earned it even though she was a capture concubine.
So cool. It makes the story of the song doing louder for me now. Everything and this song is such a beautiful tune.
Thanks for the insight.
If I had to listen to one singer sing every song in the world...it would be Maynard...hands down
+gmanmurf Totally agree with you!
👆this
At first I read "If I had to hear one singer forever it would be Maynard" ... I'm like "I already do" lols.
gmanmurf
Vise-Versa.
Definitely! His voice is smoothe and hypnotic-he can even make Taylor Swift sound smoothe!
Hearing this live, seeing them make this music on-stage.........an experience I hope to hang onto forever.
MJK has the voice of an Angel.
And the face of a devil....how ironic.
there are no perfect circles, only perfect songs, like this one
+gtnuno1 the womb is the perfect circle as described by maynard himself.
Perfect is subjective.
Since I was a kid Maynard has touched my soul with his music. No one can or will be able to replace his talent
oooooooooooo, you're so deep. Nice try, dork.
except that the definition of a circle is a perfect circle.
I’ve always loved songs like these and when I come across them,I try my best to explain music with meanings like this to my peers but they don’t seem to care enough or like music like this.
This song is much more captivating when you know the story behind it.
This is a gorgeous backdrop for this song- whoever made it clearly understands and loves the song very much. So do I, thank you.
my wife goes to show me an ed Sheridan song she is emotional about. i told her all this new guitar poppy stuff doesnt make sense to me cause they seem to be singing about a personal feeling or problem that is hard to connect with cause its thier own personal problems, waaay too many words, and not enough poetry or music. i explained that the music is standard and not engaging. so i pulled THIS one out of the hat and said this is a true emotional song that speaks to you with just the music then the words are arraged supremely so that they can make you feel how it speaks to you. She was blown away. i love Maynard!!
This is beautiful
Eso es Demuestra quien manda XD
Well this song is about MJKs feelings about his mom so it's not really that different
@@jacknife10000 right ..... which we can all relate to having feelings about our moms...
@@jacknife10000 you must not know who orestes is then or his story.
Makes me wanna cry
HE SAID THE BAND NAME!!!
+brandonhg4291 they decided to name the band "a perfect circle" after they did this song. I guess they loved that phrase :D
Every circle is perfect according to the beholder. Which is why there is a fragment of the circle in the band's icon missing, because: perfection is subjective.
I wanted to quote a philosopher that spoke about the symbolism of a circle but I forgot who it was.
+joseph quezada the logo is an edited 3 dimensional "zero" illuminated from one side
Your comment reminds me of that one Family Guy episode
"Ah! He said it! HE SAID IT!"
And that's how the inception begins.
I always thought this was about his internal struggle while his mother was dying. His inability to stop her pain and suffering because he "selfishly" doesn't want her to go.
It is. But this is just a different interpretation
I'm pretty sure this is EXACTLY why Maynard wrote this. He was definitely in love with his mother (not in the Oedipus way) like every young boy is to the first woman they spend time with. He both loved her and despised her decision to hold on to a faith so strong. He's trying to "cut away and clear away" the love/hostility that he's feeling for her and her blind faith to a god that failed her. His umbilical residue is tying him to his mom and keeping him in the world of sadness and depression that ironically is the foundation for all his beautiful music. Its the sadness he is feeling at the moment as he speaks the words of the song. He doesn't want to keep "pulling her down with him, here" in this state of pain and anger. If he could find a way to sever that pure, umbilical connection, he could come to terms with his mothers "silly" decision to hold on to God instead of holding on to him. He wants to love his mother the way he did as a boy.
This whole album ties into itself on sooooo many levels and is the core of Maynard. The fact that he was able to share his most inner thoughts and vulnerabilities to the entire world makes him a stronger person than the majority of all human beings.
2019 and it's still AMAZING.... TIMELESS PERFECTION !!!!
This song is not just about the Greek Story of Orestes, but it is in relation to his experience of having to let go of his own mother having to cut away the umbilical residue.
This song is so damn good. And means so much to me! 2020 and still here
About the note you have on the video. Here is more info: The name of this song is a reference to a Greek myth. Orestes is the son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. While he is away, his mother kills his father. Later on, Orestes comes back to avenge his father, killing his mother and her lover, Aegisthus.
However, breaking family ties is a terrible offense to the Erinyes, the Furies that even gods fear. They pursue Orestes around Greece, and he finds salvation in Athena’s temple, where the goddess makes a trial and acquits Orestes.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this song, always one of my all time favorites and some of their best work. especially maynard.
Maynard has to be in some kind of trance or possessed by a deep state of mind to come up with these complex lyrics. Even though he seems always to be complaining about his life. He is gifted with the talent to convey his feelings and emotions to huge crowd of fans. Maynard is a great performer who shows suffering and discomfort through his songs. Nevertheless he transcends music and art to become the talented musician that he really is, now and forever.
"Give me 1 MORE MEDICATED PEACEFUL MOMENT..." . I say that all day long, everyday...
I wish you many unmedicated peaceful moments. :)
Adam Kirk Thank You! I KEEP ON, 1 moment at a time! It's SO HARD some days... Many thanks for your kindness!
You are inherantly capable of anything. So theres a lot to look forward to.
trust me when I say....7 yrs of medicated peaceful moments...and now finally free.....there is no peaceful moments in medication
Good for you my friend. I quit when I was 19. It's better to confront one's troubles than to numb them down.
Enigmatic sound....I like listening to this song, it makes me travel miles without leaving my seat!
Example of irony: Right after screaming my lungs out singing this masterpiece an ad for mothers day comes on..
Oh, universe!🤣🤣
I thank the people who explain this song as well as the The meaning behind the name Perfect Circle
Jason Pascale There's no such thing as a "Perfect Circle"... lol
Jason Pate there is in conception
Am not %100 clear but am lucky question that maybe a perfect circle is womb related . A perfect womb. Something related to his Mother since his Mother inspired the band.
I shared this song on space book one day years ago.. I got several "Are you ok?" responses from people who are in metal bands.
…and we are still here doing better than ever 💜
Smoking a Doobie in 2024 and getting lost in this song. MJK that 2nd chorus will forever be unmatched 💯
2:56 Many thanks for putting this together - I realized how long I'd been in love with this song, and that I should know more about its meaning - cheers 👍🍻
eargasm song...ONE OF KIND...
I remember buying this cd at Wal-Mart... when I was like in 6th grade? Damn... That was a long time ago but still listen :).
Like how these artifacts have meaning to this song! Makes so much more sense in terms
So much deep meaning in this song.. chills.
One more medicated peaceful moment.. smh
this songs meaning is amazing and all around one of the best songs ever
My daughter and i had same conversation....if I had to only listen to one singer it would be maynard james keenan. What a good human
So Beautiful and the mythology was perfect for those who don't know x
The Histories of Greece and Italy weave themselves in this and many other myths. Studying them, you will enjoy the legend of the highest literary culture, and will discover plenty of historical/mythological events from which to draw inspiration for every form of art.
One of my favorite songs
And I don't wanna feel this overwhelming hostility!!!!!!!
gosh I really love this song. the pictures go perfectly with the song, and I like how you explained the meaning. I love learning the meanings of wonderful songs such as this one. thank you :D
This complex song brings me to a world I never thought I would find myself in. Filled with silence and hostility, Kimberly Kerwin has never given me the chance to show her who I really am. Aside from killing her deep inside, I am left to ponder what could have been and this song is amazing to listen to.
It has always been there all along , right inside of Kimberly and you .. Shine on and smile , life is tragedy and beauty all in one breath .
"And from pulling you down with me....Here."
Thanks Dani Girl.
maynard is the lyrical master mind since jim morrison. yeah might be a strange comparison but true to myself
For YEARS I've been singing this soo wrong. I would sing, "And I don't wanna feel this world around me.... I still might leave you....." OMGOSH, sometimes It pays to actually look up the lyrics lol 🥴
Haha it happens to the best of us, I promise you
This song is incredible

*I see 👀YOU HAVE GREAT TASTE IN MUSIC 👍🏿*
Well thank you
Beautiful song 🙏🙏
Well done. This song deserved something this beautiful
Great sound, I love to listen this song every night before to sleep
Maynard is TOP SHELF!!! He is at the top of my "musical miracles"
:-) Music is a very major part of my everyday life. Thanks Maynard for sharing your Genius with I & the rest of the world! :-)
I'll drink to that...top shelf only please

this is why you have to forgive
Thanks for the classical education, B L! Wish more people would post insightful/meaningful/enlightening comments instead of the other trash we see on here... sincerest thanks!
Beautiful..bitter sweet
absolutely love apc and tool! just perfect!
The line 'one womb, one shame' had me laughing so bad, it reminded me of got lol.
Thanks for upload, your awesome!
love this song sooooo much.
Sometimes I think this song is about giving birth or something. Like Maynard is speaking from a baby's point of view In Utero. "Pulling down with me, I can almost hear you scream" and "Snip away this umbilical residue" "one womb, one shame." I know Orestes is related to Greek mythology and lore.... but this is what the lyrics speak to me.
This song is so gorgeous. This is the first song by APC I've heard and it's really great :)
Nice sound quality, thanks.
I would've loved to see a collaboration with MJK and Peter Steele, both have such beautiful voices it would've been amazing.
It would have been funny just to see the two of them standing side by side.
Anybody who loves this song I advise watching the movie Agora. At the end of the movie it will all make sense. I just can’t believe they didn’t play the song when the credits roll.
all I know is I been through some depressing times where I had to live with people I wanted to kill. n this song's was like medication. Not that it made me happy but sustainable. it's was pretty much a doc work house where I could have my own music.
2019 y contando nunca para!!!! Larga vida APC
To me this song is about a man singing to his wife. That hes over their fights and arguments. He wants to leave but the only reason he doesn't is because of their soon to be born child
To me, Orestes is being used as a metaphor. Great metaphor btw! But when I hear this song it makes me think of a covert narcissistic and the victim. This would be the victims point of view. Been studying psychology lately and I feel like I understand more of what he’s saying. But that’s my point of view 🤓
There are no Perfect Circles. Matter of fact they are all Perfect.....
I guess it's keeping him from killing her by maybe pulling the plug? Like he can't let her go because he can't cut away that invisible connection of being attached. Even though it was her time. Her one more medicated peaceful moment. Her suffering, his selfish is keeping him from killing her
This and Pet are tied for first as far as my favorite APC song 😍😌🙌
That is also a great song
brilliant
Orestes was something like a Ancient Greek God...
I just had a vasectomy, this song hurts.
💀
Te felicito por el video.
❤️ this tune! ✌️
Bravo. Linked and liked.
eo me,it was like my mom and me,very toxic, abound me at 6 years old and took my brother and 3 sisters with her and left me in a place to call it abuse is a understatement, dad and his side of the family where very sick, won't go in to details, most psychologists i have seen over the years couldn't handle it and pass me on over 200 times to other, then i just stop going when i won my independence at age of 14,study every law in pa. to win against their lawyers,it didn't help that i could have been adopted by several of my mom side and last foster home.which would have been a far better future for me,but raised my self, after i got my diploma from high school at 16,and had two masters from penn. state from night school, joined the army, and all that rage, and anger helped me in the sapper unit then went on to other units to help
“Perfection”
@MrBobby55 thank you very much. That was a very kind comment, and much appreciated.
B L is mjk, the pictures were too perfect, the second to last and then the last could not have been orchastrared by anyone else.
that is a very nice compliment
Not only did I come here to hear my fav APC song, I learned A LOT about the background.
Healing from the trauma
Increased sensitivity
Thanks for the lyrics on this 🖕'ed up night bro!!🎧👊😔🤙🎤🍺🦁
"Orestes is a boy's name of Greek origin that embodies resilience and strength. With its roots in the Greek words oros, meaning “mountain,” and histemi, meaning “to stand,” Orestes means "from the mountain" or "he who stands like a mountain." The name has a rich history and origin in Greek mythology and drama."-Google

They're supposed to be working on something from what I hear. :D
Legends Never Die 420 they just announced a tour for A Perfect Circle.
Maynard also has Pusifer.
If you haven't heard of it definitely look into it!!
We got that new album dude!! Eat the Elephant!! 😁🙌
My name is Oreste so I’m gonna have to memorize this
Great song. Really great vid too BL. Well chosen images
Thank you sir
I thought it was shame, too. I guess "Shape" makes more sense from a writing standpoint. Then again, I'm not quite as wacky as our boy Maynard.
Read the story or Orestes and this will hit even more home or listen to the Orestes story on you tube if you prefer to listen and not read
Jacknife 10000, Thank You. We have experienced things this world should not know about. Yet this world breeds horrors no child should endure. We are healing, beloved. We are healing. We are touching fingers in the Spiritual world. Thank You for touching mine.
Nice
@ratm4Lui thank you very much, glad you liked it.
Give me
One more medicated peaceful moment
One more medicated peaceful moment
An addict's first and last words
So sad but true. I've been clean for over 4 years but that line gives me chills everytime I hear it. That medicated peaceful moment is so peaceful.. so numbing.. no feelings.. no emotions.. just fading in and out. Its kind scary how comforting it is to be in that state. Even worse when you can't function without being in that state.
This song actually kinda gives me the feeling.
Soul
what is the painting in the video with the man covering his ears surrounded by women?
Its called "Orestes Pursued by the Furies"
@Nomas1221 Thank you for your kind comments. This song is one of my favorites too.
Orestes was the alien.
Just kind of better music and some
My neighbors love this song .
One more medicative (Medatative) peaceful moment " 🤔 " 💥
The lyrics of this song make me think of revolution...... I wish.
