I have two favourite films; Say Anything and Local Hero. I fell head over heels in love with Local Hero the very fist time I watched it with my parents in the mid eighties, and vowed that one day I’d visit that Village. It’s one of those films that I wish would never end; I fell so in love with the scenery and characters that my heart aches when the end credits roll.
By the way, “that village” is now two villages away from where my wife and I now live! 😊

I had the great privilege of attending a screening of Local Hero followed by a Q&A between Mark and Bill Forsyth at the Screenplay film festival in Shetland, a magical experience and one where some unusual insights were gleaned. Next time you watch look closely at the cut away shot of seals, its actually sea lions !

May be my favorite of all time movie-the one I watch when nothing else sparks my interest, when I'm down, when I'm joyous. It leaves me with the same longing and joy and heartache each time. It never gets old, but as I do.....it means even more with each passing year.

Saw it as a kid, in the early 80s , and i felt that i would have to make a trip to Scotland when i grow up. And yes, a few years ago i make that trip to Scotland, drove my car all over the country, and i went on to a journey to Pennan from Aberdeen. Pennan is like you can see in Local Hero. I feel in love with Scotland and specially with Pennan. I really hope to go back in 2020!!!

Loved this movie since I first watched in the 1980s. It's comedic but with an environmental theme. Perfectly paced and watchable, over and over. I've just this week come back from a holiday in Scotland and while there me and my partner drove out to Pennan, the location where the village scenes were filmed. Unlike the fictional village of Ferness, Pennan is tiny. There is a phone box there, but it's not the one used in the movie, but still had to have my photo taken, making a long distance call - intercontinental.

In 1966, as a young child, my parents took me to a small village called Glenuig just down the coast from the Local Hero beach. You get similar views across the sea to Eigg and Rhum.
The road down Loch Ailort wasn't made yet and we had to get special permission to go along other small roads to get there. Explosions were going off nearby as they blasted their way through the rocks to make the new road.
There is a beach there and a small island just off it. At low tide, you can wade out to the island. We were the only holidaying family there. It was nothing short of paradise. We went back a year later and the new road was now made and we were no longer the only holidaymakers there. By 1973 the area was packed with people on holiday. Nowadays, it's quieter again.
When Local Hero first came out, we went to the cinema to see it. I was immediately enchanted. It is beautifully filmed, full of humour and with great music. But more than that, it's about what matters in life. Successful career vs community and environment. I believe the final scene almost came about by accident, but for me it is one of the greatest ever.
    It's my favourite film.

Takes me back to my days as a young man serving as a Mormon missionary in northern Scotland. Brings memories of people and places flooding back whenever I watch it. Without doubt one of the best films ever made.

Born in Glasgow but with relations in the highlands plus a career that took me to the Western Isle's this is in my top ten. I worked as an apprentice with one of the actors who had fame at that point from the film but not kudos from his work colleagues, that's how it works! He was still an apprentice at the time. I still shed a tear at the beauty of this movie and think back to my times on the Western Isle's which for me connect to a time and a place. Coming Home will be played at my funeral, hopefully for not some time.

Since then I jave seen it, maybe 50 times, and the final scene with the phone ringing never fails to touch my soul emotionally. What a perfect ending for a beautiful amd profound film.

Of course I agree with you. This is a brilliant film. I sat in the theater in NYC and wept during the closing credits. I still do. For one say, "Local Hero is about THIS....blah, blah...." or, "Local Hero is a story about THAT, blah, blah...." is to say one does not fully appreciate it. It is a multi-layered work, even layers within layers, like a piece by Bach. One can keep coming back to it over the years and it seems new and one finds new elements. Like Bach. Yes, it is one of the greatest films yet made.

what is not to love about this film, First watched it in the 80`s and really enjoyed the high flying young exec travelling to a local Scottish town and being looked on as exactly that a big City god. Now in my mature years i look at it in a different way, i see someone from the big life travelling to a no stress peaceful place where he can just relax and enjoy the nicer things in life. I guess with age my perspective has changed.....Great film

Local Hero takes me back to one of the best periods of my life when I was living in Israel for 2 years in the mid 1980s. I saw it in a wonderful movie houese, the Cinematek in Jerusalem. I also spent a week in northeastern Scotland probably not to far from where the movie was filmed and it's beautiful there. Plus the music is outstanding.

Was lucky enough to live near Pennan and visited the place many times. I'm not sure why they had to travel 100 miles to find a beach as there are many beaches with sand dunes and golden sands within 10 miles (Fraserburgh springs to mind).

I've always found Local Hero a peculiar film as it seems to break the usual conventions for eco-tales: What you expect is that the plucky villagers will put up a fight against the greedy corporation who want to devastate their community. Here, you get the beautiful location and the romaticised, simple way of life, but the locals are choosing the money. Now I know nothing about oil refining but would such an investment not be a cause of concern for the unspoiled coastline they presumably love? Are we sure this would happen far enough out of the way? And what kind of impact would them all becoming millionaires have on the town? The could hardly spend it locally. Its a great feelgood ending in which, arguably by chance, everything works out, though it otherwise seems to imply that everyone has their price.

Let me stay here, jings, made me laugh out loud. Professor Bandit 650 B.T.E.out., Bandit" Torque"ENJOYMENT' only ,nothing technical. PS, John G. Sinclair bike, nice, XT 250 sure, a 2 stroke zipping about, would be noisy, and annoy locals. Clever 240 4 stroke.

Have absolutely no idea what the fuss was here. The film really sold the beauty of the village and the photography was amazing, but I really can't say I laughed once. The gags were tired and uninspired. They were kind of like Monty Python jokes told incredibly dead pan without the important addition of humour. Found it incredibly boring as well and the characters were so uninspired. Oh well, a second viewing down the line may change my mind. It did make me want to go to Scotland though. That's about it...
