After thousands of videos of reactions to this song I still cry watching someone's first time hearing this song or any Pentatonix song for the first time. It just brings the viewer back to the first time they heard Pentatonix. Guy in the glasses got for sure Mitch slapped LOL
When you first hear Mitch(the angel in the big hat), that look on your face and feeling you get is called The Mitch slap! We all enjoy it.
The song was written and first performed by Leonard Cohen, and, before he passed, he declared that The Pentatonix version is the best cover of his song that he ever heard. The bass, Avi Kaplan, has left the group to go on his own career, and is doing very well. The members now: Scott Hoying (tenor/baritone), Kirstie Maldenaro (soprano), Mitch Grassi (counter-tenor), Kevin Olusola (beatboxer) and Matt Sallee (new bass). Might I suggest you check out "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Sound of Silence", "Aha" (Singapore concert) and "The Prayer"...all mind-blowing performances. PTX is in a class no other a cappella group will ever achieve.

That’s what we Pentaholics call a Mitch-slap, because you are never expecting that voice from that fellow. Only one change, Avi, the original bass left on good terms for personal reasons. He is the only change. The girl, Kirstin and the counter tenor, Mitch change their hair and looks a lot! Enjoyed guys❣️

I first saw Pentatonix when they competed and won in The Sing-Off. I was already a fan then. Next thing I know I was listening to this beautiful cover of Hallelujah. Simply fantastic!
PTX has a great cover of Bohemian Rhapsody, Havana, and pretty much any one of their over 200 songs you could check out! Their evolution of Michael Jackson is really good!
Avi, their original bass, left in 2017. He has been replaced by Matt Sallee. There have been no other changes.

PTX have been together for eleven years. Prior to that, the three main vocalists, Scott, Mitch, and Kirstin (first, third, and fourth singers in this video) sang together in high school as The Trio.
The beatboxer/tenor/cellist is Kevin. The original bass in this video and in Daft Punk is Avi. Matt took over as bass after Avi left in 2017. This is the only member change in their career.
Mitch and Kirstin change their looks a lot but it is always them.

Leonard Cohen wrote this song, I believe there are 82 verses to the whole song. It now has religious overtones but in the beginning it was more of a romantic song. Only Avi has left (guy with beard) and was replaced with Matt Sallee.

The original song is by Canadian poet / songwriter Leonard Cohen, released in 1984. I've been a huge Cohen fan since the 70's, but this was not one of my favorites because his original version didn't have a great arrangement. The Jeff Buckley version was my favorite until Pentatonix did it. Toward the end of his life, when he was in his 70's and after giving up music for some years, Cohen embarked on a series of world tours, performing to sold out stadiums with a great band of backup musicians and singers, and he did an amazing version of Hallelujah (and included my favorite "lord of song" verse which many do not include). Avi the base the guy with dark beard left about 3 years ago and replaced with a black guy named Matt. He good as well but his base not quite as good as Avi in my opinion.
