I told my older cousin I wanted to watch a scary movie when I was like 4 or 5 and this was the movie we watched. So being 22 and watching both movies The Descent doesn’t hold a candle to Hills Have Eyes. The Hills Have Eyes is always a movie I seem to go back to and watch over and over again lol

This is the only horror movie that ever scared me and left me unsettled. Obviously cannibalistic mutants don’t exist but it’s the idea of being stranded in the middle of nowhere and having your family in danger. To this day it still disturbs me.

The passion, joy, determination and attention to detail from Alexandre Aja and his crew is what the art of filmmaking is all about. The movie turns 15 today!
I remember buying a ticket for another movie to sneak in.
I barely remember Wes Cravens original movie but this remake is still one of my favorites.
Terrific gore, a likable family unit, solid makeup effects, and a believable scenario.
It's a shame what happens to this family cause you genuinely like them and don't want them to get killed by these cannibalistic mutants. On one hand you understand why they turn feral since the government conducted nuclear bomb tests on their homeland and didn't bother caring about the radiation effects, although in the other hand all they do is maim and kill innocent bystanders who wander into their mining town.
This was also my first introduction to director Alexandre Aja and actors Emilie de Ravin, Vinessa Shaw, and Dan Byrd. I do like the older son in laws arc; as he has to buck up, go against his stance against firearms to save the others.
During early 2000s horror was dominated by a lot of remakes but many low quality. This is one of the rare exceptions thankfully.
Decent relationship tensions and political anxieties. Plus it explored more of how the mutants came to be. No remorse, no need for law and order or civilized society, a result of what happens to outsiders.
The Sawny Bean Story in the 1700s was also the inspiration for Cravens older movie, although it's debated whether most of it was true or falsified.

The original actor that played Pluto Michael Berryman really did look like his character as he has a lot of birth defects he thinks it was cos his dad was sent in to clean up Hiroshima shortly after the bombing and the radiation affected his dad and him so his story in real life mirrors this story

That's not the same actress. The one who gets killed is more than likely an Army Guardsman. The comics show all of the survivors being killed in the desert, but those are non-canonical.

@@SSHGL I want to believe that it's another woman and actually, at first I didn't even think it could be the girl from the 1st movie... However, it kinda makes sense. I watched the footage again and the girl's nails (toes) are very long, that means that she probably was there for a long time.
And they may just replaced the actress.
      I'm not sure though.

Better than the original but Wes Craven and Peter Locke said that this was supposed to be a revision anyway, that they weren't completely satisfied with the first one because of the limitations of the first one . Nothing ever can beat Michael Berryman as PLUTO though and the original PAPPA JUPE and MARS and Dee Wallace!!!!

That would be fucking terrifying , the mutants in the movie have extreme superhuman strength . There extremely smart , and they know the desert like the back of their hand . Not to mention the traps and mind games they play on their victims . A lot of people would disappear if they were real . Truly truly overpowered
