- This week in the shop Trena strips and refinishes a mirrored dresser from the 1920s. She glazes between clear coats to finish.

I almost never disagree with your choice, but I am with the customer in this one. You have turned the old dresser into a family heirloom. Wonderful!!
It was purely a matter of preference. Maybe the customer was just in the mid for a lighter tone. It's gorgeous!
I know that when Trenna is given free reign, her work is never less then amazing and I would have to loved to see how this piece would have turned out with her choice. But it is so wonderful this way that I can only think that it would be like arguing which level of perfection is more perfect.
I agree I prefer the glaze the customer chose too. Beautiful job
I liked both, there really wasn't much difference to me. If I had to choose, I would have gone with the darker glaze that Trena preferred. The customer's choice was also a good look, though
I like this choice also. I think the black would have been fine but I’m not sure I liked the color it was taking the wood. This looks more true to it’s age, I think. I get where Trena is coming from though. I’m not a pro, just have a lot of old family pieces that need refinishing. Sometimes I restore, sometimes I try something new. I recently did my mom’s old 70s style octagonal occasional table. Always liked the shape, less so the 70s early American style trims and color. I mixed up a lighter stain and changed some of the design. It’s kind of a Frankenstein, and the color doesn’t really go with my other furniture, but it’s something I wanted to experiment with and I’m happy with it.
Wow, you can almost hear that poor dresser breathing a sigh of relief at having all that dark finish removed from it. It looks beautiful - not particularly my taste in furniture, but the wood is so pretty and I’m so glad your customer decided to go with letting the wood shine through. Amazing work 🙂
I agree. I think dark furniture sucks the light out of a room. Plus, my wife cannot stand what she refers to as "roachy brown." ;)
You really did it this time, you took it to the next level with one. it is so beautiful.i love the bare wood look. So light and airy.great job
Trena you're like the Superhero of furniture restoration...I'm so serious.
Lol awe Thankyou
Absolutely beautiful When I saw how light the wood became I thought it would be a shame to replicate the rather strange dark stain. The finished piece is lovely.
Alder is easy to use in cabinetmaking and can be stained to look like almost anything - so it is under the "mahogany finish"and "walnut finish" of a lot of old furniture.
And it's a lovely wood all on its own.
Watching your show I am always reminded of furnishing my first house $9,750.00, all which came from used furniture stores. Tried to buy hardwood, mostly oak, pieces, then hours of stripping. Don't think I have a single piece now, 50 years later, but still appreciate the older furniture's style and lasting attractiveness. You do great work, excellent results every time. Hello from Idaho.
old stuff is so well made. costco furniture is cardboard, painted stained saw a damaged cornor and it was layerd paper. but looked like real wood. i sold kitchens some companies stained or painted wood to look like cherry wood. one hit wounders no way to fix. maple under neath.. I have a sample turned into a pic frame.
When I was in my teens, many years ago, 😊 I painted a similar dresser WHITE ...and a wardrobe...I know, I was very bold. And, of course I didn't prep the wood so it looked horrendous in a short time. 😊
Looks fantastic, The Customer chose it well. The finish was still done with the skill of one of the best furniture restorers on the internet.
Thankyou🥰
Wonderful refresh!! Magnificent job as usual. I was glad to see the casters were removed. Dislike those things immensely .😅

That's funny - I was wondering what happened to them!
Hi. Glad to see you back and loving the new projects. You are an amazing craft woman and teacher.😊
Thank you so much!
Very nice outcome on this one. I was suprised that the color came off with the finish, but it looks so much better as a lighter shade. And a great lesson on glazing with gel stains. Thank you.
Lolololol. I have to say, I agree with the customer, I loved the warm tone she chose. I cannot imagine going back to that very dark color with the very odd shading. This restoration is terrific, Trena! Thank you!
So pretty!! It really turned out so nice! You made the dresser smile again. That shot of outside was spectacular! Beautiful country!!
As your dad might remind you, you are not in the furniture restoration business. You are in the customer satisfaction business. I am glad that you made them happy. Great job with the gel stain over the lacquer finish. I am sure that your dad is happy to be working with you again. A double win.
So true!
You’re the only furniture repair, restore woodworker I watch. ❤
Yay! Thank you!
Turned out great. Nice to see your Dad there with you. He must be very proud of his Daughter.
I think the costumer choose the right tone. So warm and beautiful. From trashy to classy. That mixed colour, does it resemble a wood type you know of? In the old days people really tried to follow the "fashion" even if they couldn't afford it. People were so inventive those days. :) Thank you for sharing Trena, it is a treat every time! Merry Christmas and happy Holidays! 🎄✨🌟
Thankyou! You too!
Im glad the costumer picked the warm tone… so much nicer
It's always great to see the true nature of the timber a piece is constructed from. A beautiful piece that deserves to be shown off.
A beautiful restoration. Looks so much nicer the lighter colour! The customer must be over the moon with it…she’s a beauty! Shop Dog is looking pretty with her haircut.
I think so too!❤️
When I first saw this piece I had to keep myself from zipping to the end because I knew you were going to make this dark horse look fresh and beautiful.
A gem 💎 of a little dresser. So much better and friendlier looking now.
Looks beautiful in the natural color. More of the wood grain is visible. I’m glad you showed her pictures and she went this route.
WELL, TRENA, YOU CERTAINLY BROUGHT THAT BACK TO LIFE! THEY SHOULD HAVE STAINED IT THAT WAY BACK IN THE 20'S. BEAUTIFUL JOB AS USUAL.
You could call your channel “second life”.
The furniture is really reborn.
When I saw the last of the old finish wiped off the drawer I knew I would leave it natural. I was happy when the customer chose my favorite of the two great stains. This dresser is one of my top favorite pieces I've watched you refinish.
The music used in your videos is top notch. It adds to my enjoyment!
Tha kyou
Awesome work, you can almost see a sigh of relief from the dresser after stripping the old finish
The dresser is gorgeous. It would have been in the darker stain also, but I really love the glow that it has in this stain. You know, you could put together lime green and purple and have a piece come out exquisite.
It must be so wonderful to be working with your Dad. My father gave me my love of wood. I lost him 30 years ago and still miss him every day and discuss projects with him.
Thank you so much!
The walnut was absolutely the right choice. Love it :-)
I love your rhythm when stripping old finish and when spraying top coat, harmony and tranquility, thank you for this lovely piece. Happy Christmas from Australia
Thankyou
Yay - another fellow Aussie tuning in to this skilled master restorer.....love her work.👌👌💕💕
As soon as you stripped off that first drawer at the 5 minute mark I was hoping that they would NOT replace that dark finish. SUCH a cool transformation. Lots to learn about how to apply finish, thanks!
I always think that the pieces of furniture you restore so lovingly to their natural beauty are almost crying out with joy and gratitude in response to the care & respect you show them. This one really is a Cinderella, so beautiful without its awful shaded finish.
🥰
12/17/23..Trenta 2day was a beautiful transformation of dark & scratchy Birch top, 3 drawer dresser w/large hinged Mirror..& very skinny turned legs...from dark brown to natural tan-sand color using your liquid stripper & light sanding. Simple routed 'oval' groves on front of 3 drawers (Brass ornate pulls) came out perfect! Much appreciate your close-up camera/lighting on those wooden (trapezoid shaped) slides for drawer edges. Also showing us the dove-tail horizontal supports for Alder exterior side pannels...like you said, this unit was very well made & now >>after your clean/strip/sand/urethene(?) & slightly darken oval groves
Thankyou!
It seems to be so much happier - a complete sweetheart of a piece ❤
Trena, you put the Sas in Saskatoon! I really like the customer's choice on the finish, but everyone has their own style choices, that's what makes the world interesting.
Hi Trena, Very, very often
when you have stripped a piece of furniture I hear myself saying 'please, please leave it like that' (apart from a clear coat or polish). Personally, I wouldn't have used either colour I'd have left it as it was cut from the magnificent tree. I appreciate you're in 'Restoration' business. Season's Greetings if we don't see you again this week. Lll
I know but you have to protect it it’s just dust your seeing. Not actual wood color that’s why it’s white
Your color explanations are really helping me learn and understand concepts that will help me get the colors right.
The before pictures look like landfill material; the finished product is, no doubt prettier than when it was new. You do amazing work.
I envy your stripper. It works like a charm and the results and the time saved are great.
This is what I love about your channel, real wood furniture. This one is a beauty!
The natural beauty in this wood has finally been given its chance to shine. Your way would have been just as beautiful, maybe even more, given your skills and sensibilities. This is truly a beautiful piece on its own, and especially fortunate to have your amazing attention 👏👏👏
Wow, thank you!
I liked the black glaze better, too, but this still turned out beautiful. Didn’t think the wood would be so nice under that truly weird original treatment.
You are an artist with an artist mind set. “I need to shut up, it is not my dresser”
That made me laugh!
I agree-the more natural look is so much nicer!
I’ve never seen stripping improve a piece so much! Wow- eye opener!
I/we don't have access to such beautiful 'proper' wooden furniture where we are, but just love and admire the beautiful magic you weave in restoring/refinishing some, ALL of these gorgeous pieces. Super workmanship👌👌💕💕
Thank you so much 😊
A common trait amongst the gifted is that the outward expression of emotional states can be more subtle than in the rest of the population. You can be feeling things very deeply without anyone knowing, and that can be a painful and isolating experience. I wish that I could tell every gifted person that people are not missing you intentionally, and you are not alone. This tendency is relatively common, but very rarely talked about. i came across this while reading and thought of you for some reason, Just want you to know we love and appreciate you, keep doing your thing ! 🙌
🥰Thankyou
Excellent!!! I was so glad your customer didn't go with that old painted look. It is a beautiful piece now. Love it. You have Skills.
I have some 1920s-30s sewing machine cabinets that have shading like this. The opaque lacquer glazes they used help cover up/even out the various natural colors and grains of the different solid and veneer wood species they used for economy.
What a lovely little piece!
Incredibly beautiful. The original finish was odd. It looks so much better.
Thanks for another great restoration video Trenna! Many years ago I lived in Regina. One weekend we drove out to the Quappelle Valley and bought a large dresser with a "harp" mirror and 2 small drawers over 2 large drawers, quite a tall piece and painted white. We stripped it down to raw wood thinking it was Pine (those were country pine days) found BIRDSEYE MAPLE!!! Which explained the heavy weight of the dresser. Thank you for sharing your work with us. Happy Holidays to you and your family and to "Shop 🐕 " too!❤
Lovely story
I think that the drawer she picked had more grain. Both choices were good. This is an incredible change. The old stain was OK but your refresh was great!!
I lean towards a darker tone personally but if your customer wants it lighter then that's what they get. The designs on the drawers are really pretty. You did a fantastic job. Thank you for sharing.👍
In effect, two different pieces of furniture; it's pretty amazing.
I'm pleased the dark finish has gone. I agreed with your choice on the glaze, but hay ho, it's the Customer who will be looking at it every day. A beautiful piece.
Yep cheers
It’s beautiful. I loved the darker glaze as well but it is 1000% better than the original
I like the piece a whole lot better when you got done with it than their original color scheme! The original pattern looked too much like it had been exposed to the sun and other environments too much in certain areas. You did a really good job and should be proud of the way you pleased your customer!!
Thankyou
That thing was really begging for for stripping, it was very satisfying to watch all that come off. The clear made huge difference too, but the stripping is always the best
Beautiful job Trena. Although both choices were beautiful I too preferred the customers choice. Amazing job beautiful piece.
Beautiful job. I’d have liked the darker stain too. But the customer is always right 😁
What a solid piece of furniture. So well made and the drawer pulls are gorgeous. The finish looks wonderful. Great job! Enjoy being with your dad.
Thanks so much!
Absolutely beautiful. It always amazing me how a restoration can change and old tired piece into a gorgeous new piece.
i might add us humans! (just a very old one)
What a lovely Christmas treat for us, Trena! The reveal as you stripped off the old finish was stunning, no wonder you called your client to let her know what a hidden gem this was. The gorgeous final result really shows off the craftsmanship of the original. Thanks!
Love it great job!
I agree with the customer, the warm tone from the brown glaze, is much more fitting 😀
I agree with your client, the warm walnut was beautiful. Good choice.
Glad the customer went along with you on the up to date finish.
I think my decision between the two glazes would depend on the rest of the room it was going in. The walnut is softer and a bit friendlier, but the other one is more elegant and crisp.
@Trena~ Lovely! You gave that old gal a makeover that brought back her true hidden beauty .....I kind of feel like I could use one of those type of makeovers myself!!! LOL😅😅 I love the figure and colors of the Alder wood on the side panels and on the top, it's so unique and refined looking. BRAVO! Cheers to you my friend! ~~Christy~~
Thanks Christie! 🥰
There is something to be said for trying to keep it original, but I'm really liking the customers choice and what you did FAR more. The lighter warmer color really does it justice.
Tha kyou!
So much cleaner looking with the glaze and clear coating. Just beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!
Ok, I have not forgiven you totally yet, for moving, however, it is so nice that you are back with your family. You sure have not lost your touch to do such exemplary work. In case you are wondering, it is 44F here today ( I still don't use metric, I'm old and have enough junk in my brain without that).
I'm so glad your customer wanted something different than that dark brown 'mud' that was on it. There was some beautiful grain underneath. I'm not a fan of dark brown furniture. That was a simply beautiful transformation. I bet they were so happy with it ❤
Me too!
I’m glad she changed with her color. Beautiful
WOW! When that old finish came off, I SO hoped she wouldn´t want it restored to that old color. In fact, if it had been mine, I would have asked to have a pickled finish to tone down the yellow and bring it to a more modern look. But it turned out beautifully! Well done, Trena!
Thanks!
So relieved you didn’t go dark ! Beautiful natural piece 🎉
Love the lighter color. Beautifully done!
Imo, she chose the right gel glaze color. It was more traditional with a warm glow.
That shadowing seems to be the style of Depression Era furniture.
The finished piece is gorgeous! So much prettier than the dark drab colour, IMHO
As soon as you removed the old dark finish, I was like..YES...that's a hidden beauty right there! So glad that the client went with the natural finish and I have to agree with her brown glaze choice. Sorry Trena! 😁Anyway great job once again!
That ok it still turned out beautiful
Beautiful job as always. i didn't realize gels could be so forgiving in terms of subtlety. Thanks for being a great teacher and inspiration. By the way, i love when your dad photo bombs your videos. He must be so proud of you.
❤️
I liked the client's choice of finish.
Hi Trena, a beautiful piece of furniture beautifully restored, Merry Christmas to you, your family and shop dog who's looking rather dapper for the Christmas season, I'm glad your disappointment with the tones didn't last long and you can appreciate your work, cheers!!🥰😘💕👍👍🐕🎄🎉🎁
Happy holidays! And Thankyou!
Wow, what a change! Looks lovely now.
I am glad the customer decided not to go with the paint & shading that were original to the dresser. The dresser turned out beautifully under your expert workmanship! Great job, Trena! Merry Christmas to you & yours!
You too! Thankyou!
4:30 The heart shape here, with the sad eyes and open mouth, reminds of Munch's _The Scream_ .
20:06 As to the warm over the neutral color: It may also have to do with the other furniture this piece will wind up sitting next to. :)
23:35 Wonderful result! My compliments to the chef! ;)
Well I'm "coming in from" Eltham (hard T, not a soft th) in SE London, England, Britain, the World. What a lovely dresser! SO MUCH BETTER than in all its days of stained ugliness. You did 100% the right thing. I LOVE THIS! You, and that beautiful timber, have made my day. (Is there anything better than wood? I mean really. Ahhhh...)
I agree with the customer on this one ! I like the warmth it gave it.❤
This little dresser is so very pretty now. I love what you did for it.
That dresser is gawgeous!!! Wow-the before was pretty damn ugly. I can’t believe they covered up that gorgeous wood. Trena u rock!
❤️❤️❤️
Thanks!
I really like the glaze the customer chose. I was with you on the glaze choice until I saw the finished result. Gorgeous job. Thanks for sharing.
It could have been better lol
WOWWWWWWWWWWWWW. What a big difference. You are an expert and so is John.
I really like the result. It is very beautiful. I love the grain and the colors in the wood.
Lovely piece of furniture! I enjoy seeing the drawers and other pieces before and after stripping as well as the staining comparisons. Nicely done, Trena! 😎👍🏻
Thanks!
Trena! I'm so HAPPY you finished this the way you did! 🥰The minute you removed the dark finish from that first piece, I thought, "Wow! 😲The woood looks amazing in a near natural." Dark finishes were standard when this was made, but this piece is too pretty to hide the wood - especially on those side panels. Really looks like Elm to me. (??) Not much Alder in pieces of that quality (at least in my neck of the woods). I think I understand your color preference, but I vote with your customer for the warmth. This is one of my favorite restorations you've done. 🤗Definately, one of the most dramatic. Thank you for sharing this with us. • How is the progress coming on your new shop building?
Thanks. Definitley not elm. It’s way busier than this was and a much different color. Shop build is going good. Just in permitting process now. Cheers!
Wow… that shaded finish was just TOO weird! It’s so much prettier now!
Such a beautiful piece of furniture with lovely details, hardware and a gorgeous wood. A wonderful job Trena. Really enjoy all of your videos. All the best.
Thank you so much!
Very nice finish. I have to say, I agree with your customers suggestion. I really like the more red/orange tint to that gel stain. Excellent job Trena!
Thanks so much!
I absolutely love the way this turned out! It’s really a beautiful dresser that was hiding under that awful shaded mess!
Yes I wanted a bit more definition and contrast
I haven't watched the whole thing, but the light wood looks SO good ...
Love the nature finish with the pop of color in the grooves.
First of all - my favorite channel posted a video so hurray for me. I too was surprised and delighted by how light it stripped out. Seeing as there are fads in furniture, I may have asked you to replicate the original in the interests of timelessness. Decisions decisions. Finally, the customer picked my least favorite of the gels. I was a little torn between the black and the natural but if it was my dresser I would have gone with the expert's (your) opinion. Have a great week.
I have wateched your videos for quite some time and it's so enjoyable to watch you now that you are sharing a shop with your dad and mom. Before your move your voice was a little heavy and you looked strained. Now your voice is "lighter" and you look and act more relaxed. You smile more and you joke more. In the past you put out some really great videos and attracted thousands of subscriptions with good reason. I predict that you will continue to attract subscriptions and more of them in a shorter time than before. I have loved your work from the beginning and you've turned the furniture repair and restoration industry on it's ear with your knowledge and technique. This video is a prime example. Thanks for doing a super job from beginning to present! Already looking forward to the next one! (P.S.: Shop dog looks great, too!) I'm off to buy you a coffee!
Thankyou so much for all your kind words Kent. I so appreciate you here. 🥰
So glad you didn’t replicate the odd shaded original finish, it is so pretty in a lighter shade but I would have preferred the black gel stain, it knocked some of the yellow back but it still looks beautiful.
Me too
