There has been a GoFundMe created for the salvation of this tragic historic place. If everyone who watched this video donated just a dollar it would go a long way towards saving this place. Incredible to think about. Mr. Nix has been trying to save this place for a very long time.
    www.gofundme.com/f/historic-cemetery-needs-your-help?+share-sheet
“This cemetery houses the remains of my paternal great grandparents as well as second great grandparents. It also houses the remains of one of the last men hanged for a double murder in Muscogee County. It also houses several other individuals (along with child's graves) -- the oldest KNOWN burial took place in 1860.
This cemetery has been brought to the attention of the local population through newspaper and television stories, and was last cleaned off in 2012. I am unable to keep it up due to disability.
Thanks to Sidestep Adventures recently posting a video on their findings at the cemetery, there has been renewed interest expressed in possibly helping with efforts for it's repair and perpetual upkeep. There are several markers in the cemetery which are dilapidated and need restoration, I'd like to see a fence put around it and if possible, video surveillance for the security of the site put in place.
Unfortunately, this costs money and resources that I don't have, which is why I'm reaching out to the public now.
I'd like to say thank you to Sidestep Adventures for allowing me use of their video on this effort, and thank you to all the public who have posted your comments on their CZcams channel.”

Yup, especially one the grave yard is over a hundred years old. West Winfield Pa's just turned a hundred a few years ago, but it was always a historical marker site due to it being a 1918 influenza graveyard. Although, there was bickering on who was to care for it between the state and the company that ia still around just under different ownership but it was blessed as a cathllic grave site, and many of the graves stones have been vandalized as well as the other crosses that were left there. It needs a new wooden cross out of railroad ties like timber like it used to have for historic preservation and maybe another for marking and respect for the deceased. I'm still pissed and oil and gas company went and layed pipe through it, kinda desecrating it more a few years before it hit hundred years old😒.

What is a chapter or org like that good for if not something like this- this is the EXACT group that should be spending dues and promoting family friends and gathering support from community orgs, scouts, or schools in order to organize a dedicated, continued, volunteer obligation for members and opportunity for the community to clean up a grave site once a month and by cycling around to all the places in your area and using fundraising abilities to document, protect, rehab/clean and ALSO learn about the ppl and places that are in the chapter’s geographical area- union AND confederate if applicable. As well as any beneficiary/wife of a confederate soldier.
The custom back then was that women would care for the bodies and graves of soldiers no matter what side they were on, bc they hoped and prayed someone would do the same for their loved ones if it came down to that. So if these chapters of organizations aren’t actively doing community service or at least hiring someone to keep up the graves where so the values and ethos of the organization actually lie? Because they’re not with those ancestors that they’ve had to prove continuity to and they proudly claim- what could be more important than preserving the physical remnants and history of those persons? When there’s a group of people with a common cause and any amount of resources and connections and influence and a goal- they already have resources that can be more important than money. But money paid for a monthly meetup vs some man hours spent with purpose and then a get together after seems like an obvious choice. But a group an also use their personal resources to get kids involved in honoring and learning about history, as well as finding graves like this gentleman or atleast connecting with him to help and learn from him. But the chapters should also make efforts to protect these places from development, hold churches and local governments/authorities accountable that may be the ones responsible for the upkeep of places etc… at THE VERY LEAST there should be an alliance between community stakeholders about the issue of protecting historic gravesites and establishing common practices and record database and information/knowledge sharing. Its PATHETIC that Ive watched many of these videos from past year up to recent times and havnt seen any community orgs besides the historical society involved with caring for and learning about, as well as preserving these places and monuments and sacred places- these are ppl’s family members, they could be yours if you’re in this chapter but it doesn’t matter if they are or not- you identify as a son/daughter of the confederate veterans then you should be doing more than playing around and gathering to talk about yourself, and MAKING THIS A PRIORITY. MAKE YOUR OWN WEBSITE. MAKE YOUR OWN MAPS AND DATABASE AND MAKE REQUIREMENTS FOR MEMBERS TO CLEAN UP ASSIGNED LOCATIONS… this isn’t that hard. But the history is fading and being destroyed each day and if you’re proud of your affiliation ACT LIKE IT.
I’m so tired of seeing kids who don’t know what real volunteering is and adults who stop educating themselves or taking a vested interest in their community and committing to outreach of some kind. A
Particularly groups like one claiming affiliation with heroic veterans they don’t want to actually pay back for handing down their legacy.

If you were driving by you would have no idea this is here. In Columbus, Georgia on one of the “bad sides of town” and behind a Rent-A-Center and other business you will find the Nix Cemetery in a small patch of trees. Look for the dumpsters overflowing with trash and you will have found it.
The sad thing is I think this cemetery underwent a clean up some time back. You couldn’t tell today. I was only able to locate 12 graves out there. There are supposed to be 27. I am sure the rest are in those trees. Down the alleyway behind the businesses I was able to locate the oldest grave - 1860. It can be found with a discarded Coca-Cola merchandising shelf carelessly discarded about the place a foot stone would go.
Does any of this shock me? No. Many old and no so old cemeteries suffer the same fate. It is interesting to look upon all of this and wonder what those buried there would think about the world around them. It has certainly changed.

Records copied Sept. 10, 1977 from a family cemetery located behind the house at 4805 Buena Vista Road, Columbus, Ga. 31907. This is the home of Mrs, Newt Williams. She is 84 years old and told me about this cemetery. There are about 17 graves in this cemetery and it is neatly kept up by Mrs, Williams. These are not any of her people, however. She stated that a lady named Woods used to come about twice a year land decorate the graves. -She was from Phenix City, Ala. She had made the wish that she be buried in this cemetery but she went up to LaGrange, Ga4 to visit a relative and died up there and was never buried here.

Thanks for doing this! I'm researching my family tree and learned all about Acadiens and the Gran Deportation when many hundreds of people were just moved and never seen again. Many were sent to the thirteen colonies, and although Georgia is not where many ended up, I feel your plight. I try to find graves of all and document them. Please try to send pics if you can to find a grave and documentation so future generations can understand. Thanks for all that you do!

Bless you for showing these folks the respect they deserve. The city or municipality could enclose with an iron fence(low maintenance) and pick up the garbage occasionally! If it is private land the city or municipal government could enforce as law for proper care. It’s the right thing to do. I hope your video brings this to the attention of the authorities.

It's the living you need to be wary of, not the dead. I blame the city for allowing the development of businesses right up to the cemetery without an easement, and for not protecting it once businesses were allowed. The city should cut back all the overgrowth and fence it off.

The local "worthies" may be waiting for it to be sufficiently forgotten, that they can claim it as abandoned, bring in someone willing to do so, and remove all traces of the cemetery being there, sell the property,- for those tin "buildings" in that area all they need is a concrete slab, and presto another ugly tin structure,-profits on the land, and taxes from whatever business moves in-that is what happens in some areas when the cemetery is inactive for a given period-sick but "progress" dont'cha know," profit in the pocket uber allis " what needs doing is for the dumpster company to be required to clean up the mess their dumpsters have created, and keep it cleaned up-or remove the dumpsters.
