    Is the "triple action" required or just the autolocking? Could you use a double action autolocking carabiner?

    • @Knot-orious
      @Knot-orious  Před 5 měsíci +2

      No, you don't necessarily need a triple action carabiner, but it's preferable to double action and not really that much more expensive. If you work in the tree care industry, it's a requirement that you use at least auto locking carabiners of some type. Great question.

      @@Knot-oriousall life support carabiners must be triple action and auto locking based on the standards according to ANSI Z-133. Also, the carabiner cinch is a big faux pas- lots of other, safer options. Jamming a pinto is also generally not accepted in completion and is overall considered a bad practice as it is not recommended for that use by the manufacturer. Just want to add some clarity. Stay safe 👍

    I've been using the adjustable friction saver with my mrs system for quite some time. But occasionally I run into problems on small spars with it slipping down and being a real pain to keep it loaded so it stays cinched. I'm wondering if you have any suggestions to make it so it holds better. ( In these situations, I really don't care about it being retrievable)

    • @Knot-orious
      @Knot-orious  Před měsícem

      I find adjustable friction savers to be a pain for a choking spar anchor because they are heavy, but they are a necessary evil in that case. Very few systems will work better for MRS. I honestly rarely ever climb MRS, but you could build a choking anchor that would not slip by taking a length of rope and tying a very large ring on one end and then tie a six wrap prusik using a sewn or tied loop that has a pulley on it that will fit through the large ring. Then, slip the pulley through the ring so that the rope chokes firmely around the spar, and then put your rope through the pulley. That would not move and it would be lower friction and still retrievable. You can make one yourself. Let me know if you do or if you need help building one. I can be reached at knotorious.contact@gmail.com or you can leave another comment!

      @Knot-orious awesome thanks, I think I kinda came up with that same solution. I am using a oetzl pulley/carabiner clipped into the sewn eyes of the prusik. I'm not sure how much weight the prusik can/should hold--I scavenged it off something else I don't remember what. Seems strong. I put a stopper knot on the end of the rope in case the prusik were to run on me. Now that I made it, I haven't had to use it-- go figure. Maybe I can send you a picture of it so you can see if this is what you meant.

      @ronsalerno2058 Go ahead and send me a picture. I actually made one myself two days ago so that I could use it as a pulleysaver or a spar anchor. I also came up with a method for making it retrievable! I can send you pictures. I'll be making a video soon showing how to make one and how it can be used and installed from the ground and retrieved from the ground.

    Your misding out loving out there.i lived out by there .for a while..its miserable hot no weather and like 10 percent of tree diversity there is here in southeast 😢...if i could ibwould move to place where its never above 65 degrees.but have established client base here..took few years. Theres nothing like the east coast and or midwest..

    • @Knot-orious

      I hate Arizona. You're correct: There is absolutely no weather. It's basically the same exact forecast every week. I used to live in Massachusetts, where the weather is immensely diverse and interesting. The summers in Arizona are insanely hot and dry and you quite literally have no choice but to stay inside in the air conditioning all day for 2-3 months straight until it cools down. It gets so hot out that my cameras will actually overheat and stop working after about five minutes, so I can't film anything during the Summer. And you're right, there's hardly any real trees in my part of the state. Thankfully, I will be moving back to Massachusetts at the end of May or June of this year. I'm excited to get back to the east coast, where tree diversity is enormous everywhere you go.

    Splices have 80% to 90% rope strength

    • @Knot-orious
      @Knot-orious  Před 8 měsíci +3

      Fair enough. I'm sure you're right about that. I was a bit overly optimistic in my estimate. Thanks for commenting!

    • @philosborn1840
      @philosborn1840 Před 8 měsíci +1

      And the strength on some splices could be even less. Take 16 braid for example,some splicers remove the centre core altogether in forming the eye. something to think about. 😮

    • @paulojanen5045
      @paulojanen5045 Před 3 měsíci

      @@philosborn1840Some ropes get all their strength from the outer sheath. In those cases, the inner core is just to keep rope from flattening out. These ropes have extra options when splicing, including removing some or all of the core as desired.

    • @paulojanen5045
      @paulojanen5045 Před 3 měsíci

      The Samson splicing guide reads that most splicing maintains 100% rope strength. Not most of my splices, and not all types, but many splices.
      With 16-strand climbing line, in particular, the core can be removed when convenient, because this type of rope generally has all of its strength in its outer layer. The core is there to keep the rope round, which can be alternatively accomplished by burying the outer core within itself.

    • @Knot-orious
      @Knot-orious  Před 3 měsíci

      That's very interesting! I believe that's exactly what I said in my video; that splices maintain "most of the strength." I knew that the sheath, for most climbing lines, is responsible for ~30% of the ropes total strength. I honestly did not realize that the core is actually responsible for most of, or all of, the rope's strength. Thanks for teaching me something and thank you for commenting! I hope someday I take the time to learn how to spice. I'd love to do some splicing!
