  • At long last…
    Twenty years ago, Who Wants to be a Millionaire premiered for the first time anywhere in the world when it aired in the UK on this date in 1998. To commemorate the occasion, and as a thank you to all of my international subscribers WWTBAM here are shows from the Australian version of Millionaire that I know you, and even the die hards in the USA will enjoy (you'll see why). It's a little different… you'd never see from Regis what you see from Eddie McGuire (boy does he make you sweat!) but he's a fantastic host, and puts together a really fun couple of shows.
    Enjoy!

    So weird how different the editing is compared to USA episodes - especially the 2nd show - they chatted for like 10 minutes then went to break! That would never fly in the USA lol.

      C. Mumm ($125,000)
      D. Veuve Clicquot (Lose $32,000)
      And Question #13 for $250,000 was
      (Cecil Scott, were the First and Second names of which famous Briton?)
      A. Cecil Day-Lewis (Lose $93,000)
      B. Cecil Rhodes (Lose $93,000)

    I wonder if two people winning a million dollars within weeks made them change the format of the show to what hot seat is now

    • @darijoe1
      @darijoe1 Před 3 lety

      I doubt it. From the time Millionaire premiered in Australia in April 1999, it took 6.5 years for the first winner, then only another 4 weeks for the second winner. By the time the original run finished in April 2006, there had only been two $1m winners in 7 years, hardly a reason to panic over excess prize money expenses.
      The reason why the show was cancelled was because Eddie McGuire was moving into his new role as CEO of Channel Nine and the network felt it was time to give the ageing format a rest. There was a void left with no hour-long Monday 8:30pm show for the rest of 2006.
      Then in 2007, while Eddie was still CEO, he began hosting Millionaire's short-lived replacement 1 vs. 100. Later in the year, Eddie resigned as network CEO and 1 vs. 100 was cancelled. Millionaire briefly returned as a live edition and with a $5m top prize in late 2007, but Channel Nine decided against renewing the show in 2008. They instead tried Power of 10 with host Steve Jacobs, but that quickly faded from people's memories.
      Meanwhile, the network had a problem on its hands. Its main rival Channel Seven had a ratings winner on its hands - Deal or No Deal with Andrew O'Keefe. It was constantly winning the crucial 5:30pm time slot since its move there in 2004 and Channel Nine was desperate to regain that top spot. The Price Is Right with Larry Emdur had that slot since 2003, but in a bid to win more ratings in 2004, it was moved forward to 5pm and Millionaire took its place at 5:30pm, which was turned into the old 30-minute daily format. That move backfired.
      Millionaire returned to Mondays at 8:30pm, while The Price Is Right remained at 5pm, but was extended to an hour-long version with elements like the showcase wheel being added. After its interest waned by late 2005, Channel Nine replaced it with Bert's Family Feud in 2006 at 5:30pm. Initially, it was a huge success, but began constantly losing to Deal or No Deal in 2007. The network gave up on game shows in that time slot in June 2007 and stuck with broadcasts of BBC's Antiques Roadshow for about a year.
      Channel Nine tried yet another format at 5:30pm in May 2008 with Million Dollar Wheel of Fortune with host Tim Campbell. That show did not even last two months and again reverted to Antiques Roadshow by July.
      Say what you like about the Hot Seat format, but it proved to be the competitor to Deal or No Deal that Channel Nine had been looking for. While it did not always win the ratings at first when it premiered in April 2009, it was always a strong contender. Its faster pace compared to its predecessor was more compelling viewing. Perhaps it was its timing with Deal or No Deal becoming long in the tooth, but Hot Seat was the king of 5:30pm by 2013.
      2013 was the year when the shoe was put on the other foot in Australia as Channel Seven looked to compete at 5:30pm with Hot Seat. The network premiered Million Dollar Minute with Simon Reeve in September 2013 weekdays at 5:30pm and relegated Deal or No Deal to 5pm for its last few weeks of new episodes until it ran repeats starting in October.
      Million Dollar Minute's ratings were not poor, but were average and the show was axed in September 2015. Later that month, Minute and Deal or No Deal were replaced with The Chase Australia with Andrew O'Keefe. Thus began the most stable period in Aussie Game Show history with both Chase and Hot Seat now having run simultaneously for nearly 6 years.

    • @RyuHaybausa
      @RyuHaybausa Před 10 měsíci

      So the Millionaire Hot Seat is different. So if you get a question wrong, the top prize goes down. From $1M to $10k. Also you can pass the question, but there’s a chance you may not get to answer the question. And here’s the catch. Let’s say if you go the way and you get the $250,000 question right, you win $1,000 no matter what. Then you have an opportunity to answer the $1M question. There are only 2 people who actually answered the $1M question. So there. That’s the difference.
