  • I still have a number of DXing videos from my European trip to upload. This one is a MW band scan in Amsterdam, which was the first stop during my trip. This was recorded on Christmas day, 25 December 2023.
    Some of my catches are quite regular in Europe (like Spain), but there are also some scarcer ones, like Radio Caroline and Radio Monique. This was recorded inside my hotel room, right in the centre of Amsterdam (it was cold and rainy outside) and I still managed to make some good catches.
    There are some interesting low-power MW stations in the Netherlands, Radio Monique is one, there is also Radio Europe (in another video, here: • Radio Europe 801 kHz a... ) and in this video you can also hear Impact AM, 100 watt transmitter.
    I try to identify all the stations, but the environment was totally new to me and in all cases there are several stations transmitting on the same frequency. I tried to find online streams to verify my IDs while I was listening. I also tried to identify the language to help with IDs. But comments and corrections are very welcome! There are some clear station IDs here though, including Radio Caroline and Radio Monique.
    Edit: 792 kHz is not Radio Sevilla, as inidcated in the video. A viewer from Athens pointed out that it is Radio Dechovka from Prague in the Czech Republic.

    Dear Andre, thank you for the amazing videos! 792 is Radio Dechovka from Praha Chech Republic. I catch it from Athens Greece.

      Dear Lampros, thank you so much for your comment and the clarification! It was a bit hard for me sometimes to ID the stations. I have added a note to my video description to change this.

    The Hungarian Radio can be received in such a good quality in the Netherlands! Wow 🙂

      I believe they use a 2000 kW transmitter. That is very, very strong, which explains why the signal even reaches the Netherlands, and much further. Some time ago I actually picked it up in South Africa, here is a video: czcams.com/video/37VhT6asSZ0/video.html It was weak, but definitely Kossuth.

    Some of your Spanish receptions happened during an annual Christmas concert by Philharmonic Orchestra of Canary Islands, or whatever it is called in English 😅 I look forward to it every year since I discovered it in 2018 or 2019 (I don't remember now 😂), and it's always a pleasant listen :) It also airs on Radio Exterior de España on SW, so that's one more reason to tune in 😉
    And affirmative re 792 Radio Dechovka 🇨🇿📯
    819 must be some Dutch LPAM, although not necessarily Impact. I heard it once, last year, with different format, but this autumn it was off-air. Only recently did I hear something else from this direction, I think it's in my New Year's Eve IQ recordings, but I still haven't checked them 😂
    936 is Iran, in Farsi. Really good catch considering your noisy urban environment 😮 but then, I think this transmitter is as close to Europe as it gets, and it's 300kW, so it does get out very well into the continent indeed.
    As for 1413, congratulations on Premier! 👏 I think Grigoriopol has a highly-directional antenna for 1413 kHz. On Twente, their rashist propaganda is usually buried in a mix of stations (also BBC Radio Gloucestershire and RNE Radio 5). Here in NE Poland - and I have to underline it's NE Poland, with the transmitter SE of me - it's a very strong, local-quality signal at night.

      Thank you so much Arnie, and thank you for all the clarifications. I find it quite challenging when travelling to ID stations correctly, I have no real frame of reference as to what should be there and what are the stronger and weaker signals. I try comparing to online streams, but sometimes I don't find all the stations online, or I don't have my laptop with me (like in Berlin, a video that will go up today). My Berlin video has a lot of guesswork :-)
      Your comments are really interesting, the 936 Farsi one from Iran is a nice catch for me. Also the 1413 one, I was actually really expecting Vesti FM there, so this one surprised me, it is not a very strong transmitter. The Dutch one is still a bit of a mystery then.
      I actually made a note in my calendar now about the Christmas special programme from Spain, I usually pick up REE quite nicely here in South Africa. I will try to listen to the Christmas concert this year. But I think you will have better reception on MW there in Poland :-) Seems to me like some of the Spanish MW signals are really strong and clear.

    Andre , I glad that you made it home safe after a multi-hour airplane trip. That is better than the multi-week trip that my old ship took to make it to Mombassab , Kenya from the Mediterranean Sea back in the early eighties…😂!
    Great MW bands scan! By the way did you pick up any US MW stations on your trip?
    Have a great day!

      Thank you! You are right, with flights these days travel time is not so bad, but I still wish it could be even quicker :-) The flight from Amsterdam to South Africa is quite a long one, about 11 hours.
      I actually did not pick up any MW stations from the US, I think for that I would probably have had to be outside.

    That's a good list, what time did you listen? I miss a couple of Dutch stations (747 MCB Radio, 801 Radio Jong Europa), also some UK stations like TalkSport and Smooth Radio. 711 was very weak indeed, I also received on that frequency SRR Radio România Actualități.

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Thank you! There is a note at the start of the video with the time, it was between 20:45 and 21:40 UTC. I did catch Radio Jong Europa (or Radio Europe, as they seem to be called now) on the previous day, but not this time. There is another video here with that: czcams.com/video/47qQUyBn6fk/video.html
      I did not catch the other stations you mention, but I stopped scanning at 999 kHz because I was getting sleepy :-) I only checked 1413 kHz, because Vesti FM is usually so strong. So I probably did not get Smooth and Talk Sport because they are above 999 kHz.

    Living in the center of the Carpatian Basin I can hear Romanian station on several MW frequencies, in fact on too many frequencies, because they make hardly possible to listen European station from abroad. And because of the big number of the Romanian stations on MW I thought Romania was a great power in radio broadcasting. However after watching this video I had to realize that the Romanian stations are insignificant, and from longer distance only one of them can be heard, even that one is weak so it's not a pleasure to listen.

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  Před 6 měsíci

      I suppose Romania still uses MW locally because it is quite stable and can travel long distances. Unfortunately it blocks out many other signals... I do think Romania, as a small country, is actually quite a power in broadcasting. Radio Romania International on SW even reaches me in South Africa. They are one of very few European countries to still have an international SW service, I love them because of that!

    • @Hunkiralyfi
      @Hunkiralyfi Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@swlistening Doing DX Scan on MW many times already I realized that the same Romanian stations can be received on several frequencies. Those Romanian language stations must have weak transmitter power because you could not get 95% of them. So your video proves that one big station is more than several weak stations on so many frequencies. Consequently for long rage MW broadcasting Hungary is indeed a great power, while Romania is not.
      On the same time you are right related the SW transmissions, but that's another question, not related to this video.

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  Před 6 měsíci

      @@Hunkiralyfi Yes, I agree with you here. Many of the Romanian stations are from weaker transmitters, all the same station, but some of those don't travel very far at all. Only the signals that come from their very strong transmitters, like in Bucharest, seem to travel very far. Kossuth Radio, on the other hand, can be heard from very far away.

      @@Hunkiralyfi Thank you so much for the link! I found the article and read it. Very interesting. The Hungarian one is definitely the strongest. I will try to catch that station from Bonaire. I have picked up some Saudi stations on MW before, which makes sense, as their transmitters are so strong.
