- Seth Andrews had the opportunity for a brief, single-camera interview with professor Richard Dawkins at the 2015 Imagine No Religion conference in Vancouver. This is that exchange.
NOTE: Richard still had the bruise under his right eye from the injury in São Paulo. He had tripped on an airport walkway.
Dawkins is epic. Really hope he is going on for many years to come!
I like when the interviewers don't interrupt the interviewee, seriously this interviewer was really articulate and respectful.
I worship a deity like man.... Dr Richard Dawkins. I'm so much happier now that I don't suffer from the delusional attributes that chrstianity had on me, my first 40 years...thank you Dr Dawkins. Thank you David Cross. Thank you George Carlin.
An annotation in the video explains his bruise: "Richard still had the bruise under his right eye from the injury in Sao Paulo. He had tripped on an airport walkway."
Like all sensible youtube users, I keep annotations off. In this rare case, they are useful.
Thanks, I often completely miss things mentioned in annotations.
Since I always turn them off.. I was curious about the bruise though.
Dave Power #6 He tripped? Fell down the stairs? Walked into a door?Janet Garrison was the culprit. There is no need to cover for spousal abuse.
I bet he tripped as he stepped onto the thing.. apparently that's a thing.. I've never seen one in real life but that's the most common way injuries happen on them.
Dave Power #6 Wouldn't have fallen if he had Jesus on his side.
yep yep.
No one leaves Brazil alive. He was lucky!
His voice is very soothing
I absolutely love Richard Dawkins, he is so pristine, wise man. He had inspired me since I have the pleasure to listen and read him.
Richard Dawkins looks very tired...
I hope he has another 20 good years though :3
Silver Icetail Here's hoping!
Silver Icetail I hope so. I am a big fan of him, and I hope to see him one day. :)
He is looking old that's okay you can probably go get atheism lessons from him in the rest home.
+David Rodgers Well he is 74 year old now !
crazee635 His father passed away only recently (2010) with 95 years of age. I hope Professors Dawkins will still be with us at that age and beyond. :)
Someone please help me, my dad is mad that I'm an atheist, he's a christian and he's been making us go to a megachurch leaving the other even though I grew up in that church. He says what a typical young earth creationist would say and very conservative. I love my dad but he hates my standpoint that he's thinking about me and my sister going to an all christian school, no internet, and planning to stop me from reading my books which are heavily science based. Whatever I say he rejects with "that kind of talk will make you get into big trouble" or he'll retort and say "well your probably go to hell".
Please my sister is crying next door to my room because of him. I've been thinking its all my fault that I came out saying I'm an atheist, I'm 15 and my sister is 16. I don't know what to do, should I stay quiet and go with his plan or should I say something. I need help please, someone help!
TheGreat SpaghettiMonster Don't worry, we're here for you. At this point, since you're still young, it would probably be the best idea to just go along with your family for your safety. At the same time, look out for any non-belief/secular communities in your area. Try going to meetings or other areas where you can converse with fellow non-believers or join a Facebook group. Either way, be careful and good luck on your quest! RAmen!!
TheGreat SpaghettiMonster Ultimately, no one can own your mind. You may need to play it cool if you're under immediate duress and not in a position where you can act/live independently. But nobody can keep you from learning, from seeking, from exploring issues and asking questions (even rhetorically).
I encourage you to use this time to do an in-depth study of the inside walls of your family's faith, turning the negative into a positive, as your experience and knowledge will actually make you more effective when the time comes to address it vocally and openly.
Ultimately, just remember that nobody can blackmail you into surrendering your own identity. Your life belongs to you.
TheGreat SpaghettiMonster That is upsetting i will say that from what ive seen a lot of famous atheist/CZcamsrs have come from oppressed/religious homes and whether you dad knows it hes building a stronger more courageous atheist i wish you the best.
TheGreat SpaghettiMonster You are not alone my friend, my experience was similar when I told my conservative Christian parents that I had become a non-believer. Things are better now but it definitely took some time for my parents to begin to understand my point of view. You should keep searching for truth and keep learning science! Continue thinking for yourself. Perhaps you'd be interested in learning a bit about Recovering from Religion. You may be able to find some helpful resources there: recoveringfromreligion.org/
Wow! That was a totally unexpected little treat! Thank you, Seth and thank you, Richard!
His intelligence makes him so attractive in my opinion.
Fantastic interview! Some very interesting questions raised, and Dawkins answered them clearly and fully.
"- organized complexity with an illusion of purpose"
Congratulations on 200,000 subscribers! Here to the next 200,000! Cheers!
We need a million of Richard Dawkins in this world.
I appreciate the humility Seth displays here by showing only Mr. Dawkins on screen and not announcing his own presence during the interview.
Very intelligent interviewer, I have to say..
Better than the last interview with him I thought. Good job.
Richard Dawkins is a highly intelligent person. as professor Dawkins it backs that up. and he has inspired me in many ways especially in my life as an Atheist. thank you so much Richard Dawkins.
great interview and good questions
I've had the pleasure of meeting him several times and he is just as wonderful in person - a friendly, soft-spoken and approachable genius! Scientists like him are my most admired celebrities.
Great questions and interview and as usual interesting and insightful answers from Dawkins too.
This is extremely interesting.. Thanks for this
I have a total man-crush on Richard Dawkins.
I'm always all ears whenever he's speaking.
*****
Elaborate on his 'poor' arguments. I think they're sound as a pound.
Well done Seth .
Thanks for sharing.
I remember Richard Dawkins in other interviews saying the “why” question is a silly question because the Universe doesn’t have a purpose for us. Life just is.
I think he meant that "why" as a "how". We often ask: "Why has something happened?" and mean: "What has led to that incident?"
I live only an hour away from Vancouver, depending on traffic. I should have gone...
Yes, you should have. If you repent enough, you might be forgiven.
Pawel X lol
Nicely done. I wonder if Seth is as stoked about getting to talk to Dawkins as I am at getting to talk to Seth.
I've gotten the chance to talk to Seth Andrews and found him perfectly approachable, I wonder if Richard was as personable. But it sounds like it was a really nice conversation.
WOW Seth ! you are truly blessed to have had this interview !
Jules S LOL i though some may find it ironic or funny !
I was a christian for many years so i catch myself still saying OMG and blessed a lot !
; )
***** i read the bible and Jesus made claims about believers that were not true ! Also Jesus and the apostle made claims about his second coming that never happened so i slowly and logically fell away !
***** power of Prayer, healing the sick, raising dead people, drinking poison and not harming you, handling deadly snakes without harm, spontaneous knowledge of different languages ( Tongues) moving mountains and throwing them in the sea and Jesus claimed he was coming back in that generation and the people there would not experience death !
***** i mean no offence ! these are subjective issues i have with the doctrine ! And thats why i lost my faith !
James Kozentine Watching the logical, reasoning mind at work. Love it!
I think Seth hasn't even begun to ask the questions he would like to present to professor Dawkins. I would love them to do this again and take all the time they need. It would be a most inspiring interview for fans of Seth and/or Richard Dawkins.
really good interview
Dawkins has a shiner.... I hope he won!
Brilliant Richard !!!
Great interview, thank you Seth
You are loved Richard.
Great interview.
Thank you Dr. Dawkins,
I read the Selfish Gene in High school over 2 decades ago and your powerful words of reason have helped me become the man I am today. I am proud to be a science minded agnostic atheist, a skeptical chiropractic physician, and a moral loving father.
You have added so many positive memes to this world. Thank you again.
I've read only 3 of his books : "The Selfish Gene" when it came out in 1976 ; "The Blind Watchmaker" ; and "The God Delusion." I TREASURE Everyone of them. BRILLIANT.
My Greatest Science Hero Is ALBERT EINSTEIN. One Needs To Read What he Wrote In Order To Understand The Thought-Processes of His Mind. Not Just A Genius. But
A GREAT GENIUS. Great Intellect & Great Imagination (distinctly different from Fantasy)
Richard Dawkins was in an airpot in São Paulo? Wow... I wish I was there.
Richard Dawkins is a man I admire, and plan to meet some day. There is some real intelligence discussing life, evolution, science, and religion here. Most people in the 'religion debate' are to undereducated to understand real world concepts and science in general.
i am really fond of richard dawkins interviews, i have learned a lot, he is a very intelligent man
E X T R E M E L Y I N T E L L I G E N T and Exceptionally Well Educated.
Cool interview
Even before watching the video I'm hiring the like button.
manamaster6
Every one would like to hire the like button.
You could make yourself feel good anytime you like. :)
Charles Dahmital I dunno, does it have good references?
Charles Dahmital I know, hitting without paying it enough would be utterly unfair.
You're operating by faith!
Blasphemy!!! XD
Yes, I'm afraid I could lose my skeptic/atheist license because of this incident.
Is there a certain distance after which signals we've sent out like I Love Lucy would be nothing more than unintelligible static? Do the signals degrade over distance alone or only when in contact with enough matter?
I was an agnostic for many years. and quite a few years ago Richard Dawkins. was the main Atheist that inspired me to become an Atheist. due to his incredible intelligence. he made it easy to see being an Atheist is the only correct decision.
Fantastic interview
I like Dawkins. He is very good at explaining his field. I have learnt quite a lot about evolution from his work.
Great interview Seth.
I love this guy
I highly recommend Richard Dawkins' book, The Greatest Show On Earth. Remarkably entertaining and easy to read.
Yes, he tripped. More likely you punched him until he agreed to an interview ;)
Thanks Seth
I like the way he thinks..
How many times did dawkins say the word "evidence" in all his youtube videos?
Is Richard Dawkins really as nice as he seems?
These men and women are so special in this world of followers. I hope eventually they will open the eyes of
people to a freer and happier life then one in the cage of any ancient or any kind of religion. We as a race could be so much more then the minions of power hungry men in high places. They and others like them keep us from all we could be.
I doubt Honey-boo-boo was born a little scientist.
I love Dawkins... I have an observation though, that I'd like to point out. His eye blinking, from the very beginning of his first response and from there on, is so rhythmic that I actually started blinking at the exact same time he was... just so I could focus on what he was saying rather than his blinking. It wasn't very hard to do, his blinking is very rhythmic like I said earlier :)
I Was So INTENSELY CONCENTRATING On Exactly What He Was Being Asked and Exactly How He Answered Each Question, That I DID NOT AT ALL NOTICE HIS BLINKING !
Transhumanism is the future.
Inferno361 Simple empathy would be simpler
Death is the future.
Inferno361 Indeed. Atheism is the kindergarten of reason, transhumanism is its university.
Probably yes, but the human part will be the loser , in this dimension.
Great, love this dude.
What's wrong with the right side of Dawkin's face? Is it due to weird lighting?
IntricWorld Check out the note at the bottom of the screen at 0:22.
is that a mark on his right cheek? haven't seen it before.
My hero.
So, responsible people are selected against (because they are responsible enough not to get knocked up). Interesting.
He got a Mike tyson inspired bruise, really artistic.
is that a hematom under Dawkins eye ?
We as self-aware beings are alone.
did someone give him a black eye?
Interesting question:
Has any organism ever evolved to move via exhalation or any type of pressurized jet? Breath in one way and shoot out the other side, thus moving forward. The closest I can think of is maybe a squid using its ink-sack to propel it. (not sure if the ink has enough thrust to be relevant though.)
yeah as far as i know all cephalopods use this to move (squid, cuttlefish, octopus and nautilus) i think oysters, clams and other animals similar the them also use something similar but if you want to look into it in more id suggest looking at species of nautilus
Ryan Dryer nautilus is maaa jaaaaaaam!
But seriously, I love em. They're like the introverts of the sea Kingdom.
Ryan Dryer Oh! Awesome! That's so cool.
Good stuff
I LOVE YOU RICKY!!!
what happened to his right cheek?!
Never mind.. Didn't read the comments... Derp...
Sometimes, I wonder why Richard Dawkins never does an appearance for Matt Dillahunty .
I love Dawkins, but something tells me that having him in a room full of small children would look similar to an early classroom scene of Arnold in "Kindergarten Cop."
Summers Time Entertainment That's why universities have started to provide safe rooms, with bubbles and pillows, videos of frolicking puppies, play doh and colouring books.
And lets face it, Dawkins is a cis gendered white male shitlord, look at him oppressing women and minorities.
What an arsehole!
Jim Riven This is gold xD
metmanik Thank you :)
The thing about people like that is you can't use logic and reason with them you will never win the argument no matter what. You have three options. get emancipated, live with other family, or tell him what he wants to hear then just do what you want. Getting stoned at church will make it slightly bearable
Good job Seth - great questions and thank you for not interrupting Professor Dawkins like some cr@p interviewers.
What is the mark under his right eye?
***** it's a skin mutation caused by random natural selection
Jolene Burke lol. He is.... becoming.
I feel bad for this man.
He is a good man, and soon he will be free.
-_-
this dude said he believe there's alien existence
Would it not be blind faith that you believe science will eventually have an answer to everything? Just wondering
i hope Richard Dawkins will have a debate with the infallible pope one day. -.- that would be fun
The aliens question is very interesting. What I don't really see people discussing is vastness in time, not just distance. Such as it is with overcoming distance, the fact that the universe is billions of years old could mean life elsewhere did exist, but it died out before humans even existed. And likewise humanity, and life on Earth in general, could cease to be before life elsewhere arises. But who knows? Maybe we will find something on Europa or Enceladus. They're close, there's water, and there's geothermal energy.
Science is not just about evidence. Religion is a system of belief. Science is a process. Science doesn't care at all what your beliefs are because that process is independent of belief.
Under 30 minutes club! Whooot :D
Richard Dawkins looks so tired
wow he got old
I'd like to hear Dawkins talk about EVP some time. Not necessarily relevant to atheism per se, but not entirely off-topic either.
12:07 But is Richard a musician, does he play music and does he know about chords etc? Minor chords sound "solemn" majors sound "grand" major-seventh chords sound "tacky" (chill-out elevator music)). Seventh chords sound the opposite, low-down blues sound (the "yerky" sound). So with chords and harmony, we have the emotion, and with the right melody and lyrics we can heighten the emotion. How simple is that? Quite simple really. We can easily understand how lyrics can make emotions, but How does the chords and tune make the emotions? That's the question Richard is really asking. We may never know, but I don't think its that complicated really.
Or maybe he's going on about the many different combinations of chords, melody and lyrics, made complex by the composer. (e.g.jazz) Like 26 letters makes our language. And it makes (just about) an infinite amount of data. Or only 4 "letters" in our DNA and only 2 "letters" in computers. And music has 12 notes that repeat by doubling the frequency (octaves). We can play the same song many octaves higher and lower and still play the same song (and in tune). So it's like only 12 notes.
+Kansas Devil (Devil66102) "without the need to say "because I said so"." You mean it's evidence based, not just assertion.
ohhhh... sorry... I found the unicorn..all is well, whew!
Fantastic point Dr. Dawkins -Science isn't based on blind faith,[btw, as religion is]it is based on evidence.
science is my religion and i strongly believe in Richard Dawkins
does Dawkins have a bruise on his right cheek?
ouch blackeye
did a muslim give him a blackeye?
all questions written by dicky dawkers i'd say lol
Explaining "...the emotion we feel on hearing a great piece of music..." on a scientific level might never be achieved. According to Richard Dawkins.
It would be equally impossible to explain the emotion we feel when we're hungry, thirsty, or in need of sex. How would one explain that emotion?
" on a scientific level 'MIGHT' never be achieved ."
I Have NO DOUBT AT ALL That In Time It Will Be Understood By Brain Research Scientists
I wonder if that's a trace of creationist argumentation on Dawkins cheekbone.
This makes me think of the Borg from the Star Trek Series. Me for one, I prefer experiencing the earth, Sea Sky, Animals vegetation on earth with my human body. It's one thing to replaice body joints and do heart, lung, kidney ,etc... transplants but we need to watch out when it comes to altering our brains. We need to evolve naturally
Human without religion is like fish without a bike.
4:12
That there may be alien life but it is so 'spaced out'
Is he saying aliens probably have pot?
Religious people saying that scientists have faith in science is shooting themselves in the foot without realizing it. They are implying if my faith is bad then so is yours even though scientists don't have faith at all when it comes to science. In other words it's a childish game of I know you are but what am I? It's just a silly game.
Richard have 75 years,he is almost dead ... that's should be real science for him !!!
