  • Seth Andrews had the opportunity for a brief, single-camera interview with professor Richard Dawkins at the 2015 Imagine No Religion conference in Vancouver. This is that exchange.
NOTE: Richard still had the bruise under his right eye from the injury in São Paulo. He had tripped on an airport walkway.

An annotation in the video explains his bruise: "Richard still had the bruise under his right eye from the injury in Sao Paulo. He had tripped on an airport walkway."
Like all sensible youtube users, I keep annotations off. In this rare case, they are useful.

I bet he tripped as he stepped onto the thing.. apparently that's a thing.. I've never seen one in real life but that's the most common way injuries happen on them.

  • @thegreatspaghettimonster6279

Someone please help me, my dad is mad that I'm an atheist, he's a christian and he's been making us go to a megachurch leaving the other even though I grew up in that church. He says what a typical young earth creationist would say and very conservative. I love my dad but he hates my standpoint that he's thinking about me and my sister going to an all christian school, no internet, and planning to stop me from reading my books which are heavily science based. Whatever I say he rejects with "that kind of talk will make you get into big trouble" or he'll retort and say "well your probably go to hell".

I don't know what to do, should I stay quiet and go with his plan or should I say something. I need help please, someone help!

TheGreat SpaghettiMonster Don't worry, we're here for you. At this point, since you're still young, it would probably be the best idea to just go along with your family for your safety. At the same time, look out for any non-belief/secular communities in your area. Try going to meetings or other areas where you can converse with fellow non-believers or join a Facebook group. Either way, be careful and good luck on your quest! RAmen!!

    • @TheThinkingAtheist
      @TheThinkingAtheist  Před 9 lety +53

TheGreat SpaghettiMonster Ultimately, no one can own your mind. You may need to play it cool if you're under immediate duress and not in a position where you can act/live independently. But nobody can keep you from learning, from seeking, from exploring issues and asking questions (even rhetorically).
I encourage you to use this time to do an in-depth study of the inside walls of your family's faith, turning the negative into a positive, as your experience and knowledge will actually make you more effective when the time comes to address it vocally and openly.
Ultimately, just remember that nobody can blackmail you into surrendering your own identity. Your life belongs to you.

TheGreat SpaghettiMonster That is upsetting i will say that from what ive seen a lot of famous atheist/CZcamsrs have come from oppressed/religious homes and whether you dad knows it hes building a stronger more courageous atheist i wish you the best.

TheGreat SpaghettiMonster You are not alone my friend, my experience was similar when I told my conservative Christian parents that I had become a non-believer. Things are better now but it definitely took some time for my parents to begin to understand my point of view. You should keep searching for truth and keep learning science! Continue thinking for yourself. Perhaps you'd be interested in learning a bit about Recovering from Religion. You may be able to find some helpful resources there: recoveringfromreligion.org/

Has any organism ever evolved to move via exhalation or any type of pressurized jet? Breath in one way and shoot out the other side, thus moving forward. The closest I can think of is maybe a squid using its ink-sack to propel it. (not sure if the ink has enough thrust to be relevant though.)

The aliens question is very interesting. What I don't really see people discussing is vastness in time, not just distance. Such as it is with overcoming distance, the fact that the universe is billions of years old could mean life elsewhere did exist, but it died out before humans even existed. And likewise humanity, and life on Earth in general, could cease to be before life elsewhere arises. But who knows? Maybe we will find something on Europa or Enceladus. They're close, there's water, and there's geothermal energy.

Science is not just about evidence. Religion is a system of belief. Science is a process. Science doesn't care at all what your beliefs are because that process is independent of belief.

I'd like to hear Dawkins talk about EVP some time. Not necessarily relevant to atheism per se, but not entirely off-topic either.

12:07 But is Richard a musician, does he play music and does he know about chords etc? Minor chords sound "solemn" majors sound "grand" major-seventh chords sound "tacky" (chill-out elevator music)). Seventh chords sound the opposite, low-down blues sound (the "yerky" sound). So with chords and harmony, we have the emotion, and with the right melody and lyrics we can heighten the emotion. How simple is that? Quite simple really. We can easily understand how lyrics can make emotions, but How does the chords and tune make the emotions? That's the question Richard is really asking. We may never know, but I don't think its that complicated really.
Or maybe he's going on about the many different combinations of chords, melody and lyrics, made complex by the composer. (e.g.jazz) Like 26 letters makes our language. And it makes (just about) an infinite amount of data. Or only 4 "letters" in our DNA and only 2 "letters" in computers. And music has 12 notes that repeat by doubling the frequency (octaves). We can play the same song many octaves higher and lower and still play the same song (and in tune). So it's like only 12 notes.

Explaining "...the emotion we feel on hearing a great piece of music..." on a scientific level might never be achieved. According to Richard Dawkins.
It would be equally impossible to explain the emotion we feel when we're hungry, thirsty, or in need of sex. How would one explain that emotion?

Religious people saying that scientists have faith in science is shooting themselves in the foot without realizing it. They are implying if my faith is bad then so is yours even though scientists don't have faith at all when it comes to science. In other words it's a childish game of I know you are but what am I? It's just a silly game.
