  • Back in 1987, David Klavins introduced the world's largest upright piano, Modell 370, which is two floors high. German musician Nils Frahm has now recorded an album on it, and the proceeds will help finance Klavins latest project: building an even bigger piano.

Why is there no mention of The Alexander Piano? It's first concert was April 4 2009. It's a 5.7 metre grand built in New Zealand.

I would extend the compass on a piano this size by at least an octave, possibly two

When is the big one going to be built? Or has it been built?

Hello Tech Tins, I found the information that David Klavins started to work on model 450i in 2013. It seems that this project has not been finished yet. /ml

Just recently it was finished basically, right now touching up details, building the podium, etc. - you can find a sound sample on my Soundcloud page - thepianoguy. :-)

I think it's a neat idea, but it appears that he is using a standard upright piano action, which (in my opinion as a pianist and a 50 year plus piano tuner) seems counterproductive. The idea of such long strings is fascinating, however hardly portable.

Leonard Molberg Thanks for your feedback, Leonard! For clarification: the upright action I use is modified in various ways, by means of repetition speed comparable to a grand action. Building a vertical piano there's no alternative to the respective action, imho the gain regarding the advanced sound offsets any minor demerits of the action by far.

+Leonard Molberg well if u want to have it kinda just get the vst from native instruments who sampled both the modell 370 and the una corda

Very very interesting! But I have a question. One thing is speed and another is the touch and the response to the nuances of it. The range of nuances that vertical machinery can give us is not the same as that of a grand piano. How have you solved it?

To be honest a Two Story Piano is hardly portable
