Pipevine Swallowtail caterpillar

After 12 years of growing Aristolochia californica to attract the Pipevine Swallowtail, caterpillars appeared for the first time this year.

Congratulations! The little guys are unfortunately in decline, but they're so cool to watch and the mature butterfly is gorgeous too! It's one of the only blue butterfly species I've seen in California.

I believed that it was headed off to pupate somewhere, so I didn't touch him. Hoping I get some more this year.
