    The difference in size between the larger mainland rieklings seen in ESO and the smaller ones found on Solstheim centuries later is likely explained by "Island Dwarfism."
    When a species moves into an environment where resources are strictly limited (like on an island), it is comparatively easier for smaller individuals to reach the total amount of food that their smaller body needs in order to be well-fed and healthy, while larger individuals who require more food will more easily become malnourished and starve. Over time, those smaller individuals get evolutionarily selected for.

    The Riekling chief doesn't want you to kill him because it's best for the tribe.
    It's because he felt threatened by your power and wants to kill you so you don't take his place.
    The other rieklings have already nsided with you and instantly kill the chief the moment he attacks you.
    Just read the quest menu after you finish it for proof.
    And on a different note, I really wanted to ride Bilgemuck after becoming chief.

    I personally love these little guys. Take a team of them everywhere I go. Have to love mods. Some of the best fun I have had was using an alternate start mod I spawned on Soltheim. Then RPed as a Skaal that had been found as a child and raised by the Rieklings. I challenged the leader to honorable combat after killing the weak Nords that thought they were going to reclaim Thirsk from my Riekling brothers. This allowed me to rise to the leadership of the tribe. After that the tribe had many adventures with me traveling across Solstheim and Skyrim. Goora the Tall will go down as the greatest leader in Riekling folklore for her many battles alongside her tribesmen. Including facing Dragons, vampires and even some guy in Ebony Armor that thought he could challenge her leadership. Tribal Strongholds were built in many places. One the native Nords called Lakeview manor.

    So this is purely based on the pics of the ESO goblin models you showed versus their appearance in Oblivion, but are Goblins devolving? There are other things I've noticed in the games that seem to be dwindling away, otherwise I might just ignore it as an inconsistency. The ESO models look to be capable of dressing and probably even crafting clothing and armor far beyond what we see in Oblivion, and they look taller and almost carry themselves like any of the intelligent races. Probably reading too far into it, but just a thought that crossed my curious mind.

    I once had an idea that the Rieklings actually evolved from the Aelyids. I know it's far fetched but just hear me out; after Saint Aleysia (not sure if I spelt her name correctly) usurped them, some splinter groups survived and evolved into the goblins you see in Oblivion. I think it would have been interesting that soms ended up in Solstheim and had to evolve to survive the cold and became the Rieklings. Again, I acknowledge the fact that this is probably incorrect, but I had it floating around in my head for a bit and whilst watching this I thought I'd say it :)

After handing in the book, this quest giver says something about Rieklings, but I do not remember what exactly. In this upload, Camel talks about the Skaal and Falmer, but this particular info is missing. Depends, older ones have a dull yet palatable flavour but are as tough as an old boot. Younger ones are sweeter and far more tender, meat from the thighs especially.
      The good stuff is inside of them, notably the liver, kidneys and heart, dice them up with some ash yams and some mushrooms and you've got an excellent pie filling.
      I've found the brain to be far too fatty and oily on its own so I usually chop it up and put it in a stew.
      If you dry the meat it has a flavour reminiscent of bacon (perhaps due to the amount of boar meat they consume) just make sure to use plenty of salt, otherwise you run the risk of mould.
      If you find a female riekling who is lactating and take the opportunity to harvest some milk you will find it to be incredibly sweet, sickly even. But unless your willing to carve your way through a whole tribe of the little pricks your prospects on finding a female are highly unlikely.

    I think its pretty amazing that even though we play as some great hero in TES, involved in monumental episodes in Nirn's history, theres still little tid bits like this. Even through all of that, these little guys still have their own story going on. In the background on a much smaller scale, these little guys are forging their own epics, their own histories and monumental ( for them) events that have shaped them as a culture. Personally i hope they survive to one day become a major race. I mean how cool would it be if the events in solsthiem ( if we chose the rieklings canonically i mean) actually lead to them expanding and developing more as a species.
    Idk about you, but i think itd be pretty cool to have played as the character in their history that granted this small, but surprisingly eager species the opportunity to establish themselves and grow into something more. Now thats epic.:)

The Rieklings that inhabit the area with the Dwemer sruins or where that Dwemer ship is (forgive me, it's been a while since I've touched Solstheim) seem to particularly enjoy dwemer scrap and the cogs and other objects they make

    When I first saw the Rieklings worshipping the horse and cart my first thoughts were this is supposed to be a cargo cults. Something which, though talked and written about for sometime, usually by people who have no idea of that they are talking about, it has been shown that cargo cults have never existed here in the real world.
    But as this is not our world I would suggest that as their culture has so little of their own goods and so many things which they have found, or possibly stolen, then it looks very much like they have a cargo cult. Hence the worship of the horse and cart. Something from which they possibly stole goods from. The interesting thing here is that though the horse and cart can be found in Skyrim they are not now found in Solstheim.

    • @anguishedcarpet

      Cargo cults never existed? There are like half a dozen known, literally still active cargo cults lmao. Come off it mate

    • @bigblue6917
      @bigblue6917 Před 6 lety

      anguishedcarpet. The question is do the people who do these things, such as build replica aircraft, do this a system of religious veneration, or are we, as so often, misunderstanding what they are doing?
      The term itself was first used as a term as a derogatory used by planters and businessmen in the Australian protectorate of Papua. Ton Otto in his article "What happened to Cargo Cults" debates the term cargo cult arguing that it does not refer to an identifiable empirical reality. Lamont Lindstrom states, having pointed out that the name is its pejorative connotation of backwardness since it imputes a goal (cargo) obtained through the wrong means (cult), whereas the actual goal is obtaining material goods and creating and renewing social relationships. In other words we re open for trading.
      So we again misunderstand other peoples cultures. Cargo Cult does not exist.

    • @anguishedcarpet
      @anguishedcarpet Před 6 lety +4

      Big Blue except that these groups have ALL of the markings of cults, down to the enigmatic leaders and willingness to commit self-harm. You might be correct in a very pedantic sense that they aren't truly "religious" but they are still functionally cults. So again I say, come off it mate.

    • @karlpoppins
      @karlpoppins Před 6 lety +1

      Well, unfortunately, in English there is hardly such a thing as "pronounce it as it's spelled". Assuming that the word "Riekling" is germanic in its conception, it should of course be pronounced as you indicate. However, the diphthong "ie" is often pronounced as the letter "i", such is in the verb "lie", so it can be confusing to some.

      Wait, there is a difference between Americans and Brits when it comes to 'th'? I know that in French and German it has an aspirated 't' sound, akin to its Indoeuropean roots, but how do Brits and Americans differ? Also are you talking about the voiced or the unvoiced variant?

    • @karlpoppins
      @karlpoppins Před 5 lety

      Well, there are many different pronunciations of the Brittish Isles. To my knowledge, however, 'Thames' seems to be an exception in this matter, as common words like 'the' or 'theme' are pronounced virtually the same way in both Standard American English and Received Pronunciation ("Brittish English").
      Accents of Gaelic influence are much different (Scottish, Irish, Welsh) and they're not what people think when they say "Brittish accent". During a trip to Ireland (or, as they call it, Eire) I found it hard to understand what the locals were saying, sometimes, particularly in Belfast.

      believe me my name is john

    • @JohnDoe-nq4du
      @JohnDoe-nq4du Před 6 lety

      Not quite. Just tacking the most common last name onto the most common first name isn't good enough to be definitively the most generic, because first and last names are not independent of each other. A person whose first name is John, for example, is disproportionately more likely to have the last name "Smith", and less likely to have the last name "Li" than would be suggested by the ratio of Smiths to Lis in the global general population. Likewise, people with the first name "Muhammad" are disproportionately less likely than non-Muhammads to have the last name "Li", thus making the combination far more distinctive than just the prevalence of its components would suggest.
      The issue is further complicated by the existence of many cultures with naming conventions other than "personal name, family name", and by cultures that swap the order of those two. For example, it raises the question of whether it'd be more appropriate to combine the most common first and most common last (defined as the name that person writes/says first, vs the one they write/say last), or to combine the most common personal and the most common familial name.
