@@jenniferschmitzer3877 actually not, bravo is correct, though some people specially in the last years are using brava for females. But that doesnt mean that bravo is wrong.
To clarify: architects tend to want to hang things, stabilising everything with suspended steel beams. It would have been possible to do the terrace roof like that IF the house structure was modern and not moving over time (old houses do that), and IF there weren’t such high temperatures in summer (which make wooden structures “move” and bend). That’s the challenge with a renovation, as I learnt: there are several ways of doing things, each expert gives you a different solution and then you are the one who must decide with the elements you have (and all the elements you still don’t know about). It’s stretching my logics skills and my research skills 😅
I find that very interesting that they wouldn’t know that/ they didn’t consult you about not wanting exposed metal beams. I am annoyed on your behalf. We are renovating an old wooden farm house and our architect sent all the plans to structural engineers prior to completion. Do they not use structural engineers? We interviewed a lot of architects and there is A LOT of variation in quality of work. One of them was a guy who talked to my husband the entire time. Needless to say he was not hired.
@@justineleconte Thank you for the explanation! I love the fact that you chose the very simple Builder's Solution (you could grow a vine up the support!) rather than the the more complex and expensive Architect's cantilever!
It just proves that a craftsman with lots of experience is more valuable than an architect! I am glad that you are doing this on your own and that you were lucky to find someone like him.
i think it takes a certain kind of spirit, call it a loving spirit, to practice over and over again the hands-on effort to succeed in the craft to be recognized as a craftsman
In the US, there is a school in Charleston, SC called the American College of the Building Arts. Many of the professors there are old school craftsmen , generations strong! Plasterers, blacksmiths, sculptors, carpentry, timber framing, architecture. Some of the graduates of the school worked on Notre Dame in Paris, and work all over the world after having been taught by the European masters.
I'm a designer in Australia, and the builder looks to be doing great work. As for that designer who didn't retract his previous client's details, that is a BIG no-no. Good luck with finding the right designer for your project. My advice, if the building is watertight, don't rush it. Find the right person to work with, and then everything will come together beautifully.
So glad things are starting to look up! Renovating can be exasperating but there's always that time when stars align and everything comes through. Good luck finding the perfect interior designer! I'm sure your house will be breathtaking when it's finished
The carpenter did such a wonderful work on making the new structure look original. And skylights add immense amounts of light. Your house will be so beautiful!
You look as light as a feather, like a burden has been lifted from your shoulder phew! I can mentally visualise your house, it's gonna be lovely 😍. Love the cooing of the pigeons too. Thanks for sharing this xx
Hi, Justine! I felt your pain. But such a relief to find such a great and creative contractor. My advice would be, when he come over to double-check that everything is waterproofed (and to collect his last check, I assume), to have a big bottle of cognac on hand and a couple of glasses, you sit him down, and you pick his brain. He is your link to a whole network of people who do good work. He may not have worked directly with an interior designer, but he probably knows people who have. If nothing else, he will have plenty of funny stories. Best of luck.
This transformation is going to be amazing when completed, Justine. The changes so far are incredible. You are doing credit to such a beautiful old home.
Looks great! The skylights are amazing for us who love more light in a home. However, over here, there is always a risk with skylights leaking. Either around the flashing or the window framing. So keep a watch on them after every rainy season and repair as needed. The exposed wood under your new 'porch' you'll want to investigate exterior 'deck' treatments to keep the wood from breaking down over time like a log in the forest. That place is transforming into a very nice home.
You may not need an interior designer if you have found the right craftsmen for the job. You are a creative person and have spent a lot of time in the house so you probably know very well what you want to do with it (and what you don't want). All you need is a structural engineer to make sure the house doesn't come down if you take out a wall. A good tip for finding craftsmen (or designers): search sites with holiday homes in your area (like 'Gites de France' or 'AirBnB'). Often these showcase renovated farmhouses etc. When you see a renovation you like, contact the owners and ask them who they worked with, I'm sure they will be happy to give you some names. Courage et restez positive!
What a great video! It's fantastic to see such progress and how happy you are with the work done 😊. And my goodness me, that southern European/Mediterranean light (I'm in the UK) 😍🥰🤩, you really can't beat it!
Just this: designing and overseeing a fashion collection while house renovation is dangling over one's head is so so so impressive! Wish you fair winds and following seas for your jouney from Hamburg Germany!
May the rain test be successful! Thank you for showing us the stunning results of your first, and critical first phase. Best wishes for finding your unicorn contractor and continued renovation progress.
Oh my God! I'm so happy for you. I get it when you mention about natural light coming in, it's absolutely amazing! The house of your dreams is starting to become a reality! Congrats!🎉❤
I am so pleased, relieved, and delighted to know that there is positive progress with your house. Congratulations on sticking with it and seeing this through.
I have been watching the renovation of Notre-Dame de Paris. With all due respect to that magnificence, your renovation feels equally spiritual. As the renovations to Notre-Dame required faith, together with learned and skilled craftspeople, so do your renovations. As a lover of all things “old,” one of my favorite sayings is “All that is old, is new again.” And that is a beautiful thing. Your house, like Notre-Dame de Paris, is being reborn. I am enjoying both renovational rebirths. Spirit reborn. I am very happy for you, Justine, and I appreciate your sharing with us. 🌅
Hello from Canada. I have followed you for many years. I was so happy to see that you were given those permits and finally able to move forward on your renovation. As you know our homes are not very old in Canada. And there is a lot of new development at least where I live. I grew up in a home that was over 100 years old. And that is rare. I was delighted to see you use second hand shingles to repair parts of your roof. Keeping close to the integrity of the home. I’m looking forward to your next step with finding your interior decorator. All the best. Raylene
Congratulations Justine! Living in a “historic” home has so many challenges but I would not live anywhere else. So many want new builds which lack character and most of the time are not as solid. Your home is BEAUTIFUL. BTW I’m sure you have talked to your Carpenter/Electrician/Plumber for references on a designer…….
What a difference! So glad you're finally making some progress and starting to see the home you'd envisioned. Best of luck! Thank you for sharing this.
Love this renovation. Something relatable compared to US home renovation 😅 I am ignorant of their needs, theres a lot of layers in their homes, I get confused but still amazed.. Here I see wood, roof, wood beams, and cement walls. Its easy for me to relate ❤️
So happy for you and well done for surviving so far. Of course you’re emotionally involved, this is your home. This is exceptionally important for people who lived in many different countries. This is so grounding for you. Can’t wait to see what’s next ❤️
Wow Justine ! You just bumped up the value of your house incredibly with that extra ceiling height upstairs and the skylights! Although all this is costing you an arm and a leg (and much energy, inconvenience) this investment will pay you back for sure! Roof and weather, it's scary. But that bit is almost over now and your upstairs ateljé is a dream come true! I hope you find the right interior designer. It's important it's the right match. If not do it yourself, I think you're alot more accomplished than you give yourself credit for, having played the contractor alone through all this work! Bravo! 💖
I have always lived in old houses and brought them back to how they should have been to begin with. the best compliment you can get is "I thought you were going to remodel".
It is extremely commendable and admirable, how you handle all this and how you deal with everything, considering how big and what kind of project this is! I really admire you!!
So pleased to see you looking happy and relaxed. And glad your house is taking the shape you want. Interior designers - not a clue why anyone uses them, I know what I like and although my house is not fashionable (basically all my furniture is hand me downs and sustainable - like my kitchen is all made from salvaged wood - no marble in sight - even the worktops are old planks), it gets so many complements from everyone who comes here. I love colour and every room is a different colour and nothing 'matches'. What is important is to design the structure to meet your needs, so where you place power points, radiators, windows, steps is more important than 'what sofa to buy'. I really dislike the corporate good taste interior design style - give me some trashy stuff anyday!
I’m excited for you! You purchased your dream home in the city where you wanted to live. It’s a lot of work but you will have the home that you want. All that beautiful light! You launched your handbag collection, you have a large CZcams following and a lovely personality. May you continue with your accomplishments and happiness. PS I love the sound of the Mourning Doves.
Oh darling I’m SO HAPPY for you!! I know how intense and stressful it can be to rehab an old house especially with water damage… But the reward is everything! Congratulations on your launch, your home, your obvious happiness ❤
I love the light, but I hope you have a solution for insulating for the heat in summer, too. Awesome that you found experienced tradesmen with the skills you needed for your dream.
I've been waiting for your updates on the house renovation!! Renovations always take so much longer than you think, but the roof is a huge one! Congrats on having it done!

Thank you so much!
Omg I'm soooo happy for you! Such a unique and special house you have! ❤️😍
High admiration for your dedication and effort growing and maintaining this lovely old structure. God speed.
Old houses deserve special treatment. Bravo!

It is so interesting that the architects did not understand the roof overhang would need additional support, but the carpenter did. Lucky you had him.

Old school carpenters for the win 🏆 at my 150 years old house, the flooring was redone in the original style, it was worth the wait for availability
Yep nothing beats a carpenter with lots of years of experience and knowledge.
