About Dude Dad:
Hi! I'm Taylor Calmus, a Colorado-based actor/comedian. I started Dude Dad© two weeks before my son Theo was born as a way to stay creative while learning to be a father. My wife Heidi and I now have 3 kids and over 400+ videos. My purpose for the channel is to entertain, enlighten and inspire.
In addition to Dude Dad©, I have been in numerous TV shows, commercials, and have regular appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live. I will also be hosting my own TV show called "Super Dad" on the new Magnolia Network / Discovery+. Heidi and the kids will also be a part of the show. I am originally from the rural community of Howard, South Dakota.

Taylor, this gave me goosebumps, thinking back to when I did this with my dad. Man I wish we had you running our race back in 1985. Bravo.
I love how u guys were one of the first to comment
I love this so much
In the early 80's, we didn't even have digital light gates to tell us who won, just a dad with really thick glasses guessing. Also, ours just ran off into a box of pillows. I still have my fun-but-slow creations.
@@bloemundude a Dad with really thick glasses guessing . that made me laugh so hard 😂😂😂
Same, but in 1999
Taylor, you're not only an amazing Dad but you're so talented and inspirational showing Kids bonding in fun ways with their Dads and Moms. XXOO ❤️
I still have my pinewood derby car from 1969, nice job on your track. Thanks to folk's like yourself who will go the extra mile and work to make a community challenge even more fun, we certainly could use more people to think less about what's in it for me and how can I be of service to others, once again thank you for being one of those people.
What a wonderful community project! Those boys will never forget that day. Thank you for doing this with/for them! Outstanding work and track!👍🎉
I absolutely love the customized dude dad track! WOW!😱🤩 and to involve friends and the community?! Is absolutely great! So nice! They are so lucky, you are there!
That was so amazing!
I'm sure all these kids and parents will remember this day for the rest of their lives.
Very cool! Everyone's a winner at the Pinewood Derby! It was an event our family looked forward to every year!!!
What a fun day for everyone. Really enjoyed this video, definitely a feel good watch. Smiled the whole time. Great Job!
More parents need to interact with their kids these days.
Great job guys! ❤️
Hear hear!!
Loved this video! Could you please post the rough dimensions (start height, loop radius, total length, etc)? I think you have breathed new life into a timeless classic that is the Pinewood Derby!
This brings back such sweet memories of my dad and brother letting me tag along to the boyscouts derby races and let me make a car! It warms my heart seeing all those daddies out there with their babies
It would be awesome if you could post the general plans. I grew up in boy scouts and this is awesome. I would love to be able to share this with more kids
Oh i just LOVE IT! What a beautiful experience for the kids!
This. Is. Awesome. Definitely need to keep adding community side quests in every now and again.
How awesome!!! I did something like this when I was a kid. It was so fun :) Thank you for bringing families together and making memories ❤️ 😀 God Bless
So good to see the behind-the-scenes work you guys put into this to make for a great day for me and my son. Thanks for doing this! #buttquack
AWESOME!!! That was totally awesome!!! Lots of good memories with my boys making and racing at Pinewood Derby. Your track ROCKS! Loved it! Kids you never know what they are going to say, “Will you be back again next year?….kid: Maybe?” 😆 best kid answer
Really nice work! I’m Cubmaster for a pack here in Texas. Do you have plans available for purchase, or even rough dimensions? Very interested in building something like this for our kiddos!
this is the awesome homegrown content CZcams needs more of. It's super nice to watch you build up your community instead of chasing views
Long time scouter…most guys still remember their pinewood derby days of youth!
Your cup pack must LOVE you for all the basic tool and construction requirements!
I miss doing the pinewood derby with my boys and the Boy Scouts.
I started helping the first year my oldest started in scouts. The next year they asked me to be an Assistant Cub Master.
They put me in charge of the pinewood derby after that and I was in charge for the next 7 years. Even after my boys moved on to Boy Scouts. I loved doing it even with all of the stress before raceday.
I started running pinewood derby build camps also to help the boys and parents who didn't have the knowledge and tools to build their cars.
This brought back so many wonderful memories.
I even saved some of my boys cars.
I would love to help you with this maybe next year.
I live within an hour of you. I know you have all the help you probably need but just in case you needed any more, I would be honored if I could help.
I know how much work it can be. But totally worth it.
Thank you so much for all of the videos you do.
or, do a more epic one in your area!
Glad you got your circular loop to work. Roller coasters use a tear-drop shape because it keeps the G-forces more consistent throughout (read: nobody should black out while riding it). For derby cars, a tear-drop shape might help keep cars of varying speed on the track better.
But I feel like a collab with Mark Rober would produce the best results. :D
I literally had the BIGGEST grin on my face through this entire video! Well done y'all!
Looking forward to watching this with all
Come join live chat!
My husband remembers doing this back in the ‘50’s. And then he started reliving other memories. Thanks.
Awesome. My son did the pinewood derby in FoCo for a few years. Its a fun time that you made even more special. Great job
CONGRATULATIONS TAYLOR, TEAM DUDE DAD AND ALL THE KIDS AND FAMILY THERE!! 🤩 this is incredible! 🤗
I remember doing that long ago! You are Amazing those kids looked so happy and excited 🎉❤
This was awesome. Kids grow up fast. I will never regret all the time I spent with my kids doing all kinds of stuff from entomology to a Nat'l air pistol competition to art projects to creations in the kitchen to home improvement projects to 4H Horticulture State Matches. Now that I am empty nested all of it still makes me smile. Dude Dad you rock!
Possibly the best dude dad episode I have ever seen. Such an inspiration!
Whoa! This is awesome! Love the lights on the tracks! Definitely not a cheap adventure, but great memories were made here!
I love this! I remember doing this in my church during skips. Great way to engage the community and get outside! Way more fun than anything online!
Radical!
Awesome idea!! Looks like everyone had a blast. Also love the way that the kids were involved in the actual car making process. When my kids went through Cub Scouts, it was a cut throat event and most of the kids never even saw their cars until the day of the race.
So awesome to watch. Did not know the Derby was still going on. I remember my Dad and brother making the cars back in the 70’s. Your track rocks!!
That was AWESOME, Taylor!!!!❤️🏆❤️
THAT WAS AAHMAZING!!!
Away from the screen, while some events, creativity and community! Awwwwwwesome.
What a stupendous community project. They'll never forget it. Wel done.
Taylor, you did a fantastic job on that loop track, I'm a 65yr old lady and I would be just as excited as those little kids😉 What fun and it looked like the kids had a blast. 👍👍
I wish this was how pinewood derbies we're done. I love the energy and the suspense! anyone's game.
AWESOME!!! As a mom who has 6 Eagle Scouts...this would have been THE most epic thing ever when they were Cub Scouts! Dude Dad ROCKS!
Very awesome! The world needs more people like you.
That was awesome! Such a great, wholesome family event! What an amazing Dude Dad!
I have been waiting for this for a long time
I think you might need some physics dad vibes. So there are 3 things that the car making it through the loop depend on: the size of the loop(radius of the circle), height of the start(compared to the base of the loop), and the mass of the car. Most people would say you just need the start to me as high as the top of the loop. They’d be wrong, because they are only thinking in terms of energy. For a roller coaster to get over a hump you only need to start as high as the hump. But in a loop the track isn’t holding it up against gravity, so in science terms gravity is doing work to try and pull the car off the track. So you need to split the problem. So at minimum you need enough speed in the loop to over come gravity. Centripetal acceleration is (speed)squared divided by the radius of the loop. And because we need that acceleration to counter the acceleration from gravity it needs to equal 9.8 meters per second sq, which is the average acceleration from gravity. Now we can solve for the minimum speed we need when entering the loop. Here we can look back to energy. If all the energy of the car is in its motion(kinetic) then the total energy before the car goes into the loop at the bottom is 1/2 times its mass times its speed, which that speed needs to me that same minimum speed from the first part right? So we can calculate the energy it needs going into the loop. Then we make sure it has that energy by using height. Potential energy from height is equal to the cars mass times the acceleration from gravity(9.8) times the height you raise it to, which you can measure from any point because it’s about the difference between two heights. To clarify if you want to know how much potential energy ball has before you drop it, you need to measure from where you expect it to stop; aka the ground. Since energy lost to friction is probably low you can say that the potential energy from the height of the start has to equal the energy of the moving car before it enters the loop. So (height in meters)(mass of car in kg)(9.8 m/s^2)=(1/2)(mass of the car in kg)(9.8 m/s^2)(radius of the loop)…. Or after you cancel a few things-> height = 1/2 radius of the loop. So the start has to be twice as high as the loop, roughly
I had a lot of fun building pinewood derby cars with my dad way back when. We took it very seriously. From weight distribution to getting the perfect axles and wheel to using graphite to reduce friction. Dad got real good at it because I had 5 and then my brother had 5. Dad had 10 consecutive years of derby cars.
great Job - those kids will never forget that - there was nothing better than the pinewood derby
I CAN NOT WAIT EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What an awesome community project! You guys rock!
Seriously, this is just awesome! What I would’ve given for a Pinewood derby setup like this as a kid!!!
Dude this was one of the best episodes you’ve ever done!!
Love all your videos! Never fail to make me laugh.😁😁😁
Thanks for following!!
What an awesome project! Looks like everyone had a great time!
So fun!! I would love to see races in person on a track like this.
Awesome !! Who has more fun, the kids or the adults ?? Fun fun fun ! 🚗🚕🚙
This is way better than the derby our scouts have done!! My son would love this, can't wait to show him this!
I love this so much!! Seeing kids excited in an environment built specifically for them must be so rewarding. Keep doing things like this! It's what they'll remember when the get to be my age instead of being like me, still all sorts of salty at not being allowed to do the Pinewood Derby cuz I'm a girl.... Yup, still not over it.
That's a very cool race. Looks like the kids had lots of fun.
That really was epic!!
That was totally awesome!!! Such a great idea to bring the community together ❤❤❤❤
My kids were in Pack 287 out of Loveland, CO back in the early 2000s. I was the committee chair. Putting on those Pinewood Derby events was a lot of work, but the kids had a blast making the cars. We always had parent and sibling races as well. Those were a lot of fun!! I still have my kid's cars down in the basement. lol.
Amazing .... any way you look at this. I love seeing the little ones having so much fun! ♥♥♥
This looked like so much fun for the kids!
Such a great day. Looking forward to next year - the kids are too!
Wow! The race trail looks Awesome!!!!
I love the loop idea! 😊👍
As a gal who's parents were in the scouting program, this activity was THE activity! Besides camping of course. 😉
Pretty sure they'd love to make something like this.
That looked like such fun. I remember doing the pinewood derby races when I was in scouts. Always a fun time. Wish we had that kind of track back in the 80s. Such creativity in that track and so awesome that everyone was having a blast. Keep up the great work Dude Dad.
We had the fast cars from Indiana. Let me know if you need some fast cars to test the track next year. Appreciate what this channel does!!!!
Great job on an excellent community project, Taylor and team! I dare you to do it again. ^5
So many awesome memories pine wood derby
YOU GUYS are just the B E S T !👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
As someone who purchases Ryobi tools solely due to cost I’m happy to see dude dad uses them too
So much fun and some amazing childhood memories coming back from my Boy Scout days. Thanks @dude dad for sharing this amazing event with everyone.
This is amazing! You rock, Dude Dad!
Love it! Dude Dad is such an inspiration.
I love the Dude Dad derby shirts!
Love!! Looks like so much fun!!
That was so nice of you to make that amazing track with a loop for those kids! That looked like so much fun! Those kids will never forget this! You always put 100% in everything you do and every project you are working on! You are such an inspiration to parents everywhere that should play with their kids and make amazing memories with their kids!
Love love love this!!!
I needs dad friends like you in my life
What a blast!
Absolutely love this!! Way to go!
I love this. I was in Cub Scouts and this was one of the most memorable part of it. Thank you for doing such and awesome job with this race.
Taylor….you’re just Golden, man ❤️ 🙌🏻
so awesome! I remember doing pinewood derby when I was in boy scouts.
That was so awesome!!!! Thanks for sharing.
Love seeing all the parents hanging out with their kids spending quality time together away from electronics!! Great job Dude Dad!!
This looks like it was the most amazing thing! I'm sorry we missed it. I married a dude dad, and we were going to race his unbeaten whale that he made with his own dude dad. Unfortunately, we buried him the Saturday after race day. We are looking forward to next year though! We'll see your hotrod and raise you a whale and a tootsie roll!
Epic Pinewood Derby track! Our troop needs to do this! So fun!
Amazing time such a joy and great memories!!
TOTALLY AWESOME !!!
We did this in RAs growing up and I loved building the cars!
I love step 5! Lol this is the best!!!
How do you guys always almost make me cry! I can't wait to be able to do this sort of thing for my someday kids!
🤘 So awesome Taylor!
Epiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiccccccc!!!!!!!
I am so happy that the pinewood derby still exist thank you Taylor for keeping kids off their screens
For a team building activity, we once built a loop using rain gutter material. Our cars were... rocket powered! They blasted through the loop and then went air born. We were at a model airplane airport and we were going for distance, to the end of the runway! Pinewood derby cars are too much fun!
Dude, as a former cubmaster this is awesome!! Nothing like a “derby dad”.
Need to add a camera to the front of the car. Be a great shot. We did this for our pack
