    GVB Amsterdam Tram line 5 Cab ride drivers view Central Station - Station Zuid - Depot Havenstraat with snow
    The heavy snowfall caused a malfunction of the point switch at Binnenhof, which meant that the trams of line 5 had to switch cabs at Station Zuid back to Central Station. Because this tram made his last ride he returned to Depot Havenstraat after making switching cabs at Station Zuid.

    Just come back from Amsterdam yesterday, fantastic 4 days metro/tram riding.. Got distracted but got the metro lines in and nearly all the team routes 17 mostly hotel was a two min walk from Derkinderenstraat ….. Only one 'spoiler' thought I'd got on the Tram 17 (first thing in the morning brain fog) and got stuck on the loop at Matterhorn! Turns out I got on the Number 1.. and as look would have it, it appears no one was in the booth... Very funny at the time, the GVB driver was amused I should of realised when the tram turned left at Meer en Vaart (or More than Faart I called it-Nice Lake) Love my Amsterdam trams.. No number 9 now though...

      @@Bobrogers99 -the snow seems to keep most bicycle riders off the streets-and then their are courageous walkers that need to keep their distance from moving Trams-especially in slippery snow ! It also seems Amsterdam City outlying areas are well planned for Tram travel-unlike outlying or suburban areas in America-way too dependent on Autos ! Dank U Wel !

      Zware sneeuwval/ heavy snow is een zeldzaamheid in Nederland. Als er 20 cm sneeuw valt, ligt het openbare leven al plat. We mogen blij zijn als er sowieso sneeuw valt in de winter. Meestal is het overdag boven 0 C en 's nachts onder 0 C.

    How are the interlaced tracks signaled (for example when leaving Prinsengracht)? There are no street signals, and the distances are visually too far apart for it to be on the basis of a tram in one particular direction having priority over the other. Also, on such an extensive/busy system I can't imagine Control has the time to authorize each movement by radio. Therefore, do the trams have some system of 'in-cab' signaling? I spent a day riding the Amsterdam trams a good few years ago, but never noticed this feature. (from retired UK tram driver/trainer)

    • @dolfheibloem8154
      @dolfheibloem8154 Před 3 lety

      There are no signals for interlaced tracks; trams to Central Station have priority. Drivers sometimes do switch on the indicator lights for a left turn to indicate that he/she will proceed. Two or three times a year it happens that 2 trams meet front to front in both Leidstraat and Utrechtsestraat. When such happens during rush hour it may take a while before one of the trams can drive backwards because next trams are waiting on the canal bridges. In Leidsestraat the tram stops on the bridges Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht allow 2 Combino trams, in Utechtsestraat (tram 4) just one tram. With 2 trams on those bridges in Leidsestraat the roads along the canal are blocked for motorcars. Bicycals always find their way.

    • @PreNeanderthal
      @PreNeanderthal Před 3 lety

      @@dolfheibloem8154 Many thanks for the information. It would seem GVB Amsterdam treat their drivers as intelligent adults. Before I retired (11 years ago) I worked for Croydon Tramlink. I started there while the system was still being built and before any of it was opened to the public. As one of their first drivers I (together with five others) was given a fair amount of responsibility and we six were involved with initializing and testing much of the infrastructure as well as the trams themselves. We also went on to help train new drivers. But, as the years went on we were treated more and more like brainless idiots and now the management won't trust a driver with the simplest of tasks, without radioing control for permission first. You can't even get out and adjust a set of stuck points without instructions from control, even though you know that's exactly what he/she/it is going to tell you to do. The idea of a driver now being allowed to use his initiative, or relying on something as simple as a tram having priority in a predetermined direction, is something Croydon Tramlink's management wouldn't possibly understand.
      It's many years now since I've visited the Netherlands (or anywhere else abroad) but prior to that, for over fifteen consecutive years we holidayed in various parts of the country and I always took the opportunity for at least one day in the fortnight, to ride the trams of the various cities.
