Here is my review of the DZOFILM Vespid Retro Primes.
Two of my latest documentaries were shot using these lenses so in this video I will talk about my experience filming with them what I like and don’t like about these lenses and finally whether or not I would recommend them.
Used on the BMPCC6K & 6K Pro.
Let me know if you have any questions :).
Cheers,
Flo

Here is my review of the DZOFILM Vespid Retro Primes (used on the BMPCC6K & 6K Pro)
Have you had to chance to use them yet?
Cheers,
Flo
The lenses look great! It's crazy how many options we have now compared to just 10 years ago.
They’re amazing! And yeah it’s insane these days, for lenses and cameras 🤩
Loved this one. As always, it’s great to look back on those projects when it’s packaged up so nicely like this. Can’t wait to get my hands on these lenses again, I really enjoyed working with them 🙏🎉
Thanks man!! Such great lenses and super proud of the images we created :)
Nice review, it says something if you're shooting projects with them. That cycling video looked awesome. It's too bad about the "set only" approach. Thankfully, for those of us who are budget constrained, they aren't taking that approach with the Arles, though these retro lenses might be the ones if I could buy them one at a time.
Thank you!! And yes, it is a shame but you still have the Arles and the Vespids :)
@@OfTwoLands Arles yes, Vespids no. I had zero interest in modern lenses until I started seeing footage from the Arles. There is something about those lenses that...really gets to me. Except for the cost, though I can't complain cuz to me they remind what I like about Cooke lenses.
These primes are so cool! Lovely character!
I wish they could sell them individually or in sets of two or three, besides all seven or nothing. That and a blue flare option, fingers crossed!
They really are lovely! And yeah it would be nice to be able to just grab a few instead of the full kit.
By the way, great work on your documentaries excellently crafted and composed!
Thanks so much ☺️🙏
Great video as always! Thank you very much! Your videos inspired me to buy the BMCC 6K Full Frame. For a few years I've been using Canon R5 and recently was experimenting with filming in 8K ProRes RAW on a Ninja V plus but was never able to get the image to look exactly how I like it. I absolutely love the image produced by the 6K Full Frame though! Thanks again and please keep educating and inspiring amateur videographers and filmmakers like myself!
Thanks so much for the positive feedback and glad I could help in any way ☺️🙏
Happy shooting 🎥!!
Thanks Flo. Looks great - I could never afford these but torn between them and the vespids.
Thanks for watching!! The Vespids are still amazing lenses and I've seen stunning work from them. These Retro are very unique and a better rental option for most people. The regular Vespids would be a good investment :)
These lenses are so pretty 😍😍
They really are 😍🔥
Great video!
Thank you!!
amazing!
☺️🙏
Great review, but those blue flares are not very retro. The Meike FF cine lenses have warmer flares and a more vintage look and feel.
Being primarily a run & gun shooter, do you see any value or practical application in using the longer focal lengths like the 75/100/125?
To me focal lengths don't really depend on the style of shooting. If you need shots that require those longer focal lengths then you need them. I shoot run and gun a lot and I love using them, especially for details, close ups and to create compression :).
Seems like you got a special version with blue flares. The ones you can buy right now are only with amber flares.
Now that you mention it I think you’re right! I only used these ones so didn’t notice a difference in flare colour.
@@OfTwoLands would be interesting to know if those were just prototypes or actually coming to market 😅
The lenses look great, but I find them a bit overpriced...it's crazy that a coating that is actually worse than the normal Vespids should be 3 times as expensive.
And the fact that the retros are only available as a set does not promote sales in my opinion. A customizable set of 3; 4; or 5 would be great.
And like you said...I love flairs too, but sometimes it might be a bit too much.
I'm currently thinking about a set of dzo lenses...but I'll probably go for the normal Vespids for the sake of price.
Thanks for your video...and bravo...really a nice documentary about your grandfather!
chapeau
Cheers Bernd
Thank you!!
Yes, they are quite pricey but also different but I do agree a set of 3 or 4 would be nice as an option to buy.
The regular Vespids still look amazing!
Thanks for watching :)
Swear by my normal vespids. Would like these but tbh I shoot a bit warmer with my lights and WB so I’m happy with my full cheaper set. Get them. Lush.
a great look
They do have a great look! Thanks for watching ☺️🙏
Can I use them with bmpcc OG and would you recommend it?
If you can find a EF to MFT or PL to MFT then I don't see why not but I would prefer to use these or more recent cameras personally.
how were you able to film such dark scenes for the blacksmith doc without insane noise ? i understand DV has a great denoiser, but ive seen the bmc6k's low light and it falls apart pretty quickly after 1250iso.
I have to disagree, I have been using the BMPCC6Ks for many years and never had an issue with them even at ISO 3200 and above. The scenes you saw were also properly lit and denoising in DV is super easy and very powerful :)
Shooting on the native ISO is a real difference-maker in terms of noise on the 6k. 3200 is much cleaner than 2500 for example.
do you think in settings that are more run and gun without real lighting prep that it could be used? At 3200iso with a dark room and sparks Id imagine a bunch of noise and totally lost detail in the shadows . havent tried the 6kff but the original 6k struggles alot for this @@OfTwoLands
