    There is a thing they called the big 5 of folk metal in Finland: Ensiferum, Finntroll, Moonsorrow, Korpiklaani and Turisas.
    From Ensiferum:
    - Lai Lai Hei
    - Iron
    - Into Battle
    - From Afar
    - Victory Song
    Finntroll:
    - Trollhammaren
    Turisas:
    - To Holmgard and Beyond

  • @BryonAutry
    @BryonAutry Před 3 lety +17

    Glad you were finally able to check these guys out. I've mentioned it before, but the song "Token of Time" by Ensiferum is literally the song that got me into them and got me into folk metal in general after that. The best I can suggest is a double reaction. The album version (2001) to hear Jari's vocals and the original way it sounded, and then following it up with a reaction to the live version from their only live DVD from 2006 with Petri on vocals to see some gear and hear how the band evolved. You are not likely to find any good quality concert footage with Jari, unfortunately, sicne he was only around for the demos and first 2 albums.
    This most recent album was amazing (it's definitely in my top 3, if not my fave album of the year!) and from what I have been seeing, it has been regarded as their best release in years by many (which I agree with). Adding Pekka Montin on keyboards and clean vocals was a great decision, the dude has PIPES! My favorite songs from that album include "Andromeda", "For Sirens" and "Midsummer Magic".

    • @BryonAutry
      @BryonAutry Před 3 lety +1

      Also, bit of trivia, but Pedro from A&P Reacts is wearing a Norther shirt, which is Petri Lindroos' original band before leaving to go full time with Ensiferum. Norther are great for fans of Children Of Bodom.

      I totally agree with you about Thalassic.
      I put in on par with their earliest albums.
      I had given up a bit on Ensiferum these last few years, but that album totally rekindled my flame for them. One with the Sea, Run from the Crushing Tide, Andromeda and Vainamoinen Part III are absolutely amazing.
      But I consider "Rum, Women, Victory" to be one of the absolute worst songs of their catalog.

    Nice to see you finally getting into Ensiferum! They have a great discography of various styles, from fast blasting to slow ballads. From the newest album, the title track Andromeda is my favorite and it also has a music video for you to watch. Other Petri era songs to start with could be Victory Song, From Afar, Axe Of Judgement. From Jari maybe Token of Time, Treacherous Gods, Little Dreamer or Lai Lai Hei for starters.
    Honestly, there is a lot of great songs with this band and both singers so you have a lot to listen to. They have some over 10 minute song which are really good, like Heathen Throne and The Longest Journey (Heathen Throne part II). And they rock as a live band, can recommend! They have also made a few acoustic tours in Finland, and those were epic too. I clapped my hands so much they started to bleed :D Lai Lai Hei especially had a great campfire vibe during the song, so maybe check out both electric and acoustic for that.

    How fun to see Ensiferum, I have not listened to them in many many years but I can definitely find myself drinking to this song at a metal festival.
    The whole self-titled album Ensiferum is pretty much a classic in my book, I believe Jari was in the band on their first album.
    To be honest, I think you would love the whole album.

    Unfortunately there are only two live videos on CZcams with Jari himself singing. But I think it would be nice for you to hear the original version because Ensiferum back then was more raw, uncommertial and less cheesy (in my opinion) than nowadays. TREACHEROUS GODS is an absolutely must to hear!!! 🤘🏻
    By the way this band is awesome live- jumping and singing my ass off every time I see them live 🙃

    Great to watch you reacting to this band. Keep with them, they have a lot of amazing stuff. Andromeda is another banger from last album. From Jari Maempa (which you can remember, is the frontman of Wintersun) check out Abandoned and Battle Song

    The one constant for this band over the years is the guitarist in the sleeveless shirt, Makus Toivennen. He's written/co written a significant amount of their catalog over the years, and also plays lead from time to time, does vocals, and is just one of those all around amazing dudes in the biz that doesn't get a whole lot of recognition. The clean vocals are new, they added a new keyboard player on this album that does those. It was a little weird at first to hear this, but the guy's got a great voice, and it opens up a lot of new stuff for them (though he's not as cute as their past female keyboardists, Meiju Enho and Emmi Silvennoinen haha). These guys are in my top 5 bands for sure. They also have one of the most epic short songs ever, Tumman Virran Taa, which is a men's choir kinda thing that leads into an equally epic 12 or so minute song. \m/

    Lots of great songs with this band. If you continue listening to this band, they have a song series called Heathen Throne. Expanding over 2 albums and long enough to be an album on its own.

      And, yea.. The current vocalist of Ensiferum is Petri Lindroos. He was the former vocalist/guitar
      band name Norther (finnish band too) actually i follow Norther before Petri join Ensiferum. But Tank! You gotta listened to this band called Aeternam. They're from Canada! I fucking love the band. Their music are mind blowing. Please make an ROADIE REACTIONS for Aeternam. Damascus Gate and Al-Qassam is the best for me. There are other great songs too, but no official music videos.

    This band, and this kind of music was a really popular metal genre back in the early 2000s, atleast here in the far north of Sweden.
    I was more into Children of Bodom at the time, but I remember Ensiferum being really good too :)

    What's similar still after Jari's era, is the melodies: they come from Finnish folk music. For us Finns it's like hearing sped up, with heavier beat - 'metallized' - very old folk songs, old for our grandparents. Something you have heard with an accordion and fiddle. Anyways, they're their own compositions - but they use themes, from the national romantic sounds of Finnish folk music. They have even made Finnish Medley - folks songs in a metal medley: nostalgy and modern speed & grit for the Finns.

  • @Tarantantalas
    @Tarantantalas Před 3 lety +1

    I see lot's of comments on Jari's era on Ensiferum which is also fantastic but, you should give Norther a shot as well. It is Petri Lindroos's previous band which rocks and is quite underrated, a relic from the past. You can go with Death Unlimited or Mirror of Madness

  • @Thnielsen85

    Hi there Tank, another awesome reaction and yes, with this album "new" Ensiferum finally have found their own style. After Jari left they had a hard time to find it, changed their style around. They still were awesome live, especially the accoustic tour was rly nice. But still its hard to keep going if someone like jari leaves a band. From Ensiferum first and second album are both awesome. But that doesnt mean the next albums were not good. U still can find treasures on them. "From Afar" i.e. has "Twilight Tavern" or "Longest Journey" on it which are rly good. If u would react to one of them i tell u another one from another album wich is also awesome. The thing is, even if great after Jari there was something missing for everyone. Thats not different for me but i still liked Ensi alot and went to their concerts. Now im glad with this new album they finally will find their way back to the high-greatness of Ensiferum again, in their own style.

    Ensiferum Lai Lai Hei next. And then pretty much anything from their first 3 albums. If you like Wintersun then... enuff said. Songs like Token of Time, treacherous Gods, windrider, the super heavy slayer of light etc are just amazing and right up there with the best metal I have ever heard. You're gonna love this band, I was blown away once I got into them.
