Once you understand this chord structure, your piano playing will never be the same. It's used commonly in both Jazz and Neo Soul, but you'll really hear it used in an absolutely gorgeous way in modern Neo Soul-Inspired tracks that cross genres as well. A really important part of this sound is the dim(maj7) chord, i.e. a diminished triad with a major 7. The structure comes down to being built like a block chord, but with a major 7 instead of a 6. Use this over any melody or chord progression for a modern sound. Enjoy this jazz and Neo Soul piano tutorial with Noah Kellman.

It’s such an important of improvisation, whether for jazz piano, or other instruments as well, so be sure to watch to the end and make the most of these exercises.

So around year 2000 I was shamrlesdly promoting my upstate NY jazz group to everyone, including people I met in my day job in stroke rehabilitation. One patient"s family came out to a gig with E.S.P., and this little boy was awestruck at my admittedly mediocre smooth jazz piano playing, and wanted to start learning, himself. Zoom ahead 20 years, and I am sitting here in Norway learning jazz stuff I should have perfected decades ago from that very same guy. How cool is that, Noah! Your videos, chops and insights are pure gold!

Yes! Recording yourself is so important! I used to play very staccato because I thought it made me swing harder but in reality it sounded terrible.

Awesome tutorial. Thank you for demonstrating and explaining so simply. I sat down and fell right into it. 👍 Working with a bass track on it now. It’s really wonderful!

Hello Noah, can you make a video if you show us how to use jazz harmony properly for every song you want to play, how does it work, I think jazz ❤

This has to be the toughest thing to teach. Or - to put it in another way - I find this is the thing most jazz learners struggle with is "swing feel". In my day back in University we used to call it "swinging backwards" with the accent in the wrong place. Great video btw.

Man I don't know how you managed to demonstrate all those variations 😅
But I think there's nothing like actually playing with people, or immerse yourself in listening to recordings, let the swing feel of them hard-swangin' players rub off on you. It's really like learning another human language (I speak and am learning a couple of them), you learn pronunciation, accent/intonation, grammar, etc., same with swing feel.

The fingers should move across the keys like dancers. It's easy to focus too much on notes, but I always find that when my fingers are really feeling the movement, the notes come to me just fine anyway.

I think that constantly emphasizing the up beat sounds just as boring as constantly emphasizing the down beat. Just as boring as always starting the melody on the downbeat or upbeat. The secret lies in a healthy mix (I am a drummer :-) )

If your chops don't swing, you ain't discovered Barry Harris. Simple as that.

Him and Kenny Drew swing the hardest imo. Also Wynton Kelly.
