Figuring Out Your Computing Personality

- Many of my students know they want to be in computing but aren't sure which sub-discipline to go into: computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, information technology, information science, data science, or cybersecurity. This video may not answer that question, but it offers a resource that might help. Using the problem space presented in one of the ACM/IEEE-CS Computing Curricula Overview reports - www.acm.org/education/curricu... we discuss some of the traits of the different fields.

Thanks a lot, i remember how it was very difficult to choose the right discipline , for that i putted my self in all the fields and then i found my way in software engineering
Cybersecurity is all over the map, and has its own specialties. Low-level hardware and software is an important component of it. Think RF, onsite electronic security, reverse engineering malware and ROM auditing (requiring assembly language), exploit and shellcode writing.
Haha had a lecture today at 13:00 where we were informed which direction to go in second semester :D, btw I like Your channel a lot and it is helping me on my way to graduate. Thank You!
Fantastic presentation
I used to be a CS person, but then Adobe bumped subscription prices...
This was very "eye-opening". I really wish I had a tool like this when I was in high school; I think I chose the wrong IT field (systems administration) because I'd rather be designing/engineering than fixing/maintaining. BTW, the link in the description above gave a 404; I then saw that it included a ")" on the end.
Any crossover with the art personalities? There are people developing and designing apps and games with a lot of emphasis on design and humanities
Thank you for this amazing video, I am glad I came accross it. Well, I have a bachelors degree in Computer Engineering. I like embedded systems but I also like cybersecurity. I have failed to choose between the two for my masters degree. Do you have any suggestions?
At the end its the one you enjoy doinf for the most time. When im doing somethin that lures me if i find myself loss after some time doing it and going low in enthisiasm then its not for me. When im doing firmware and hardware engineering is where i lost track of time, also settng up IT equipment for the company, but after the initial install i loose exitment because everything is running ok. Sometimes there are two lines.
Cyber-security and Data science are going to be really big areas moving forward. Both very challenging fields. I think these broad categories are going to subdivide into sub fields.
Excellent observation. I would agree.
Based on my experience that most companies hire more computer science in cyber security positions to fill up the gap. Because of the heterogeneous computing, understanding a top level of how data flow and algorithm to process those data are necessary skills for computer engineer to optimize computer architecture. That is just my opinion. I could be wrong.
I really love computer engineering !
But I want to spend 50% of my time creating software and the other 50% creating or repairing computer hardware.
A firmware engineer maybe.
I live on the south half of this graph in terms of computing 🤓, but I am definitely a people person socially speaking. 😊
wow you have a lot of friends !
Yeah, I'm starting to doubt this guy actually works with computers 😜
we in India have computer engg ..no software engg ... i took a mean course known as BCA which is like software + low level.. But i am into low level
