  • This is a motor that has been removed from an old VHS VCR and modified for use in an RC electric model airplane. The airplane will be a 48" wingspan Lazy Bee constructed from Dollar Tree foam board.

Nobody makes good content like this on youtube any more.

I believe most vcr drum motors were 3 phase ac. In order to get enough speed and power to run a buffer wheel, you would have to completely rebuid it. This would include rewinding with heaver gage wire, machine a new rotating can with super strength neo magnets and driven with a 3 phase speed control as used with model airplanes. Not a normal diy project.

    CZcams won't allow posting websites
    Google: Home-built motors and models.
It will depend on the number of teeth in the stator. Mine is 9 teeth. 25 gage, 32 winds. First tooth CW, second CCW, third CW and this completes the first phase. Repeat for the other phases. 10 magnets, NSNSNSNSNS. My motor is a Delta config.
The motor is mounted on a wobble stick for balanceing.

TY, most small motors in VCR's and hard drives are 3 phase AC. Yes, they can function as generators. You can Google "Images of 3 phase bridge rectifier" to get a diagram on how to hook up the rectifiers. I don't have any idea how effiecent this will be . You will have to do like everyone else - Experiment.

can you share any info on this motor? did it work or your plane?
and how did you get power to it

i need some help with vcr motors.. questions. can i use vcr motor as a generator? and if i can, how to connect it? what do i need for that? i wanna make that vcr motor that he can produce electricity that it can charge the phone..but with minimum of rpm-s and what is the minimum of rpms for that motor to charge my cell phone.. i think i need 5 V and 0.7 A for charging.. so how to connect that and what is the minimum of rpms and what wire should i use. so i can make him efficient as possible.ty

I have a motor from vcr and it's beautiful. But so far I couldn't hook it up. it has some PCB and the only action I got from the motor was slight tilt to one direction and briefly back, and that was it. What is the voltage your motor uses?

***** I just bought a pc power supply, which will be dedicated only for my projects. I think the white wire in the 20-pin ATX connector is -12V. If i use that one + ground, should the motor work? Do I need to control it with either -5V or +5V ? I'm sorry for asking the very basic question, it's just I'm new to this and I would like to know how to do it.

***** pc power supply is a DC power supply. It supplies +12V, +5V (usb-like), 3.3V, -12V (phase) and -5V (phase). In your first response, you told me, dc won't do anything with it, because it's not pulsing. Does that mean the -12 V will work? the connector has 14 pin. It seems to be 3-phase motor, but I'm not sure what it means. If I knew what voltages should I apply to it, i'd be willing to test combinations of them to the pins. I'd love to get it to work for various application in my workshop. But it seems I have LOTS to learn from the smarter folks about the multiple phase stepping motors.

+itube612 Try connecting AC to the motor, you can get low AC voltage from a transformer. First the motor will hum, then spin the motor with your hand and it will spin up. I doubt it will go very fast though.

Mars Seeker You can not use this type of motor to generate electricity.

Hurricane Floyd yes you can, it's quite simple actually , i just didn't know think it was that simple . just has to spin fast enough .
