  • This is the Oakland A's 1981 highlight film that conclusively proves that The Wave, aka La Ola Mexicana, was invented on October 15, 1981 by Krazy George at the Oakland Coliseum during the playoff game between the Oakland A's and the New York Yankees - Broadcaster Joe Garagiola

I was born and raised in San Jose and grew up in the 70's and 80's. Krazy George was a legend back then and still is. The guy is my childhood. 😀

Legend. I went to a quakes game last weekend and shocked and happy to see him in a vintage quakes jersey.

I was at the game . 20 years old and full of piss and vinegar. Remember hearing goose gossage warming up in bullpen. The pop of the catchers mitt. We were sitting by the right field foul pole . Good times. Also bought a propeller hat from banjo man in parking lot before the game.

Rob Weller did the wave as everyone knows it today. His version was a continuous wave, not one section at a time as he had done two weeks before in Oakland. Also Seattle named it the wave.

As far as I remember, we have always done the wave in Arlington Texas. And now, in 2021 Globe Life Field in Arlington Texas, the brand new home of the Texas Rangers...we still do the wave. Thank you for this George!

Oakland’s second claim to a spot in world history.
The first?-“There’s no there there,” the line Gertrude Stein immortalized upon visting the spot where her childhood home once stood.

Lol the First Mexican wave started in Monterrey Mexico in a derby match between Monterrey FC vs Tigres UANL in 1969, it's gotten more famous when Mexicans started spamming it in the World Cup Mexico 1970 which it got it's history from, it was used then by central and south Americans in their respective football leagues for fun .

No matter who started it, one thing is for certain. It wasn’t started in 1986.
And while this version is a bit different than how it evolved, I remember doing it the way it always is done around 1984 in college football games.
By 1986 it had already gotten old and stale IMO.
I think it would be quite a coincidence that it became popular after the 1986 World Cup and attributed to Mexico and then when people found out it was done much earlier and was commonplace in the US, that people remembered it was done earlier - also in Mexico. To me that sounds like people who don’t want to give up credit for creating it and manufacturing another story to back up their claim.
IMO calling it the Mexican Wave just shows the arrogance of soccer/football fans. They are so insulated that they couldn’t imagine it being created in another sport.

    • @dio13373

its called the Mexican wave because it got popularized during the Mexican soccer world cup where millions of people where watching, Mexicans just called it " the wave "the UK and Australia on the other hand called it " the Mexican wave" some argue started before 86 in Monterrey during a classic match between Monterrey vs Tigres, truth is Monterrey is a Mexican city that is very Americanized and also enjoy playing baseball so there is a chance the local baseball team "sultanes" copy krazy george wave and then the soccer teams copy sultanes and it ended up in the Mexico86 world cup that way.

@George Henderson I remember doing the wave when it first came out and seeing You at the A's games. So what's changed since then?.. The fans do not cheer "Lets Go A's".. Its Lets Go Oakland.. And as for the Wave??.. It's more of a NO NO among the die hard fans. Fans are not into the Wave anymore.. Hmmm... Maybe it's time for Krazy George to make a *Special* A's game appearance as the team fights it's way to the playoffs.

Back when baseball was still fun to watch. Now It's all about money, arrogant players, and Ped's. Pro Sports has been ruined by corruption. For instance the Oakland A's. Instead of paying their players and keeping them, they took their revenue $$$ from the league and pocketed it. Every year they claim poverty when in reality the owners didn't want to spend or invest in a great team with great tradition. Now we get word that the Oakland A's are building the new stadium in the worst possible spot near Laney College offices. The fans deserve a waterfront park after all the bs lies we've endured from Beane and company. Beane promised he was done "giving" our players away, but now he goes and gives Healy away to the Mariners for some shitty releif pitchers. We wouldn't have to do this if you would have kept our pitchers you gave away to the Nationals.

@M Martínez Actually no, what you're referring to was in 1986, not 1968, this is the first recorded instance of a wave, the only reason it looks weird is because it was new and the crowd didnt exactly know what to do

    • @abhineetsingh7836
      @abhineetsingh7836 Před 4 lety +2

@M Martínez No, look up "Macmillan Dictionary Mexican Wave", there's an article by the Macmillan Dictionary explaining the wave's origins, it originated in American by Krazy George Henderson, but became famous in Mexico in the 1986 World Cup, not the 1968 Olympics.
