It marks you as named member of a structure greater and older than any individual could ever be. In many way they are the literal bearers of history and should not be envied or despised. But should be respected as a living part of History. It is through such people that history and culture 'lives'. It is utterly undemocratic. And that is okay because Reality Itself Is Not Democratic. And despite being a peasant myself- my surname is the centuries old Anglo-Norman mark of historical bondsman status- I would only begrudge a Noble their rank were they to abuse it against me, thus braking our bond.
