Thanks for the great detailed video on this carburetor cleaning and rebuild. I would have never tackled this project had it not been for you making it seem so simple. Same with the video about replacing the thermostat. My motor thanks you also! Glad I found your channel. Keep making these Mercury Outboard videos. I'm sure I'll need more info soon.
An excellent video, I used it for my first attempt at a rebuild but a significant improvement for this process is after the carb is mounted to the block but BEFORE bolts are tightened (just catch some of the threads on the studs) and all other steps you mention are completed, install the idle/choke assembly. This made the installation very much easier as compared to what was demonstrated in your video.
Thank you for this! Love these 2 stoke Merc's with shift in the tiller feature. My favorite PB's of all time really. Just bought another (well used) 15 hp and it's going to need a carb rebuild this weekend.
Hi Sterling, Thanks for posting this video. Very helpful👍 Referencing 10:00 on the video: I discovered an improved way to place the thin gasket portion when assembling the fuel pump. I placed it onto the outer housing / cover, dropped the bolts through and then easily placed it atop the rest of the assy. The hanging screws automatically align the gasket perfectly and it went right together.
Thanks Sterling for a great instructional video. Just a warning to others , as my kit didn't come with the paper gaskets for the brass screws. It had a stainless and a brass washer that didn't fit them anyways. So make sure to do as you say and get the genuine kit. Cheers from Australia and keep up the great videos. Cheers.
THANK you for the video. My little 8 hp runs best with the choke open or half open. Then after it warms up the darn thing smells like its flooding. Then it won't start. Wait a day and starts right up. So I want to rebuild the carb and see if that helps. I bet the jet is dirty. After watching this video I bet I can do it myself.
Great video. You explained it well. That looks like a good quality carb kit. I bought a carb kit from an E-Bay vender for my 1999 Mech 25. It has a very similar carb with slight differences from this one. Taking in the account that these kits will fit many different carb applications you need to check the fit of the gasket against the OEM gaskets. Air flow is important. In my kit the gasket between the carb and engine had to be re-cut to add the circular cuts in the sides of the big opening like the OEM gasket has. On the same gasket the small hole that connects the engine vacuum to the fuel pump was placed wrong. It looks like a slot opening on the after market gasket. I had to take a paper punch and make the slot longer to align the gasket up to the opening in the carb so the vacuum flows unrestricted.
Yes the carburetors on the 25 are very similar. I’ve used the same kit a few times and it seems to work well I ordered the rest of them that he had in stock at the time.
Great videos. I have this same motor and really appreciate the content. I would love to see a short video of one of these motors running correctly at idle and at speed. Mine smokes an excessive amount (or at least I think it does). A video of a correctly tuned/maintained motor would be a great reference. Thanks for the videos!
Sometimes you just need to get out there and run it on the water. These motors don’t like to be at idle for a long period of time they will start to build up and smoke a lot.
Great video. I ran in to an issue.... After reassembling my fuel pump body is cracked and leaks. I suspect I over tightened it or maybe it is just too old and is falling apart. I have to order a new fuel pump kit now. Hopefully that gets me back on the water.
Like all the others said excellent video and thanks for putting it out there. What wasn’t excellent is that I did loose the bb that goes inside the accelerator pump any word on where I can find one or part #?
Thank for your great videos. I got my carb cleaned but the top of my fuel pump broke off right after the motor started. ( the piece that has a screw through it). What is that screw for? Will the fuel pump work with that piece broken off?
I very nice video, considering I'm rebuilding the same carb. One question.... what energizes the fuel pump? On many fuel pumps I see at least two ports, in and out. On this fuel pump there are no ports. Is the pump operated by the suction in the carb itself, and all fuel connections are located within the carb? Also, I had a leak in the small diameter hose at the bottom of the carb. What is that hose for, overflow gases?
I just rebuilt my 8 hp merc after watching your video. When i assembled the fuel pump gaskets together just as you did and reinstalled the carb back onto the motor, squeezed the fuel bulb i had gas pouring out of the fuel pump. So i took it all apart and used the other gasket that was a one piece with the rubber bladder. Put it all back together and now it doesn't leak, but having a really hard time getting it started. Do you have video of how to set up the linkage on these motors.
Love the video! Once reassembled I get fuel dripping/squirting out of the section that has the spring (video reference 3.20) is that supposed to happen? Gasket seemed fine and screws were tight, theres a little hole on the side it comes out of
Best videos on CZcams. Trust me I have watched them all. Quick question... The correct side up of the float and float height. The manual states one inch, but it doesn't say 1 inch from the needle rim end or 1 inch from the bottom of the bowl (top of the centre tube). Thanks for the content. Ever in Ireland... I'll buy you a pint... or two.
Hi. I'm so glad I've found your channel. U are a great engineer. I've just bought a 15hp 2 stroke Hangkai outboard direct from china. I believe they r a complete replica of a discontinued line of Older Mercury engines. Do u know if the part numbers in your vids would be compatible for me? Many thanks.... jj
This was a really helpful video and I was able to rebuild easily. However the little gasket shown at 6:15 in the video with the channel cut out. Should fuel come out of this when priming the engine with the fuel bulb? or have I missed something, Any help appreciated.
I have gas coming out of the small vent tube that goes to the crankcase in 2 places. Not sure why. Soon has i turn the motor over gas sprays out of the small tube. I rebuilt the carburetor but thinking it may be the reed valves? Not sure how to test those or replace them?
Do you have one rebuilding the carb on the 5hp Mercury 2 stroke? I inherited it from my dad and I know it hasn’t been started in at least 8-10 years. It’s been stored inside in a dry location. I’m guessing it’s somewhere between a 1986-2006. I have the serial number but not sure how to find out more about this motor including the right carb rebuild kit.
I feel like my float movement is minimized due to the brass fork being bent a little. Idk tho it’s a brand new rebuild kit from quicksilver. Any thoughts? I don’t believe these have a float adjustment. I may be incorrect tho
Where can I find the part number for carburetor? I've tried looking on the Mercury website in the parts catalog but it doesn't pull up ANYTHING for the serial number on my unit.
I have a question for you. I have a late 80s merc 2 stroke 9.9 and i was rebuilding the carb. I of course lost the bb that you had at the 14 min mark in this video. I cant find that part by itself anywhere online. Is it available or do you have any idea where i could get one. Really appreciate any feedback
Sir, I have a 1986 Mercury 6hp but my carburetor does not have the plastic assembly with the spring and diaphragm in it. Mine has a solid piece thith the stop screw in it. I believe the model is Wmc5a. I do not understand how this pulses to get fuel ? There is nobody in my area that works on these old outboards. there is also a hose off the carburetor but not in the same location as the one on your carburetor. It was not connected to anything. I see a "T" in your vent hose , can you tell me where that hose connects on the engine ? Thanks
Great video. I did everything then reinstalled the carb primed it and it started. It run great for a min or two. Now when I prime it gas comes out of the hole on tHe fuel pump. Any suggestions on the problem.
Hello I have a 1989 Mercury 9.9 2 stroke. I ordered a carb rebuild kit from a local shop and they gave me a Yamaha kit. I called and they said it will work but I'm still unsure. Will it work?
@7:50. That top part bubbles out gas on mine…. When at full throttle it wont leak but when it bogs down at full throttle it bubbles/leaks gas,,,, can it be cause the holes are clogged up????
Thanks for the video! I am in the process of cleaning my carb. Unfortunately my carb does not have the TOP plate cover that you remove at 6:20. Is this part vital for function? Thanks
How can I get the small BB in the primer enrichment above the spring? I dropped mine and cannot afford $130 for a complete overhaul kit. Excellent video. I just found your channel and subscribed.
Thank you!! I have a question. In the hole on the bottom that the main jet holds the bowl on. When I look up inside those threads there is a brass piece. It looks bent off to one side. What is that and is there a way to remove it?
Thank you for this beautiful video. Sir I'm from Algérie. you can tell me how can i get this repair kit i have mercury mariner 9.9 2 strocke engine. and can you find an address to buy it. Thanks very much.
Great video i would just like to ask will that gasket kit fit a mariner 25hp i have looked in the service manual and can not find parts number in it thanks in advance
Hi Sterling .Great video/instruction. -I want to just replace my jet, as shown in part of your vid. Can I just order that? My 8hp 2stroke '97 merc starts on first pull every time..idles well, runs very well low speed and med speed. Bogs down and starts to stall when attempting high speed. Used to work very well on High. Think the jet is partially clogged. -Also..any vids coming about adjusting the carb while running past + - the 1 1/2 turns you advise. Thank you Ken
Yes you can replace the jet. In the part of the video where I show you how to spray out the jet if you look in there you will see a flat tip screw. You can just screw that out and that’s actually your jet.
Great video well done, I just shelled out AUD $855 to have the carby overhauled. Dropped the boat into the water and it would not run, ripped out the carby found the bottom jet was blocked and that BB is no where to be found. Bet the repairer lost it any body know what size the ball actually is you cannot order it separately
Very good point about the ball ( BB ) on the carburetor Bowl. I sure hope someone looks at these comments again because I'm right in the middle of rebuilding my carburetor and the little BB I speak of is missing! Where can I get another one? I've looked everywhere and can't find one. Hope somebody can help me. Thanks
Thanks for your reply, but not sure what you are referring to? Do you know where I can get ahold of the little BB or ball I am speaking of? Thanks very much.
Hey I was wondering where I would be able to buy a BB for the primer. I purchased this motor used and it doesn’t have one when I took it apart. If I can’t buy just the BB will something that I can buy local work?

Great video. Very clear and easy to follow. I'm told "don't lose the BB"... the kit is expensive. I'll be tackling this today.

I just did it at home thanks to your video. Thank you so much!
Absolutely fantastic video and watched just as I ordered a kit for my yr 2000 mariner/mercury carb

Great video! Just cleaned mine and followed your instructions. My kit must be different because some of the gaskets was a lot easier than yours.
Very informative and very well explained (like a real pro).... Thank you !
Thanks, I look forward to more interesting content on these 2-stroke engines. Greetings from Italy

I replaced the float and I'm not sure if I did it right. Is there any advice on the little piece of metal that creates the spring action?
