- Join me on a trip to San Carlos as I fix a Pilatus PC-12NG that experienced a rudder trim runaway. The culprit was the trim adapter. Stick around until the end for a surprise.

Thought I'd come back here for the first time in a long time.
Last time i watched your channel, i was atill in A&P school.
Now im a mechanic at Jetblue! 💪
I hope you come back one day, James.
If I had the plane to myself, I would sit in every seat at least twice
James
Excellent angle shots. Always professional technical comments. Keeps me coming back. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing your work with the rest of us. Good job! ✌
Dear james....keep these videos going man! your a huge inspiration!
with a whole lotta love
c lam
Love your videos. I fly the PC-12 at work and it's awesome to see the other side of things. I'm always too busy to talk with our mechanics unless we have a problem. Keep it up!
Don't want to bother you but missing your videos. Hope they didn't cut you off. I thought you put your company in a good light.
i realize Im kinda off topic but do anybody know a good place to watch new movies online ?
@Marco Lucas i watch on flixzone. You can find it on google :)
@Rayden Curtis yup, been watching on flixzone for months myself :)
@Rayden Curtis Thank you, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) I appreciate it!
@Marco Lucas Glad I could help =)
Hey buddy - another awesome video. Crazy to see how similar yet different what you do compared to automotive techs do. Awesome vlogs, keep up the good work :)
You the man! I enjoy your videos. I find them, fascinating 😊
Dope videos man keep it up I work for United airlines as An aircraft technician and seeing these videos on you tube make us aircraft technician known keep spreading the knolwedge. love it !
excellent video. Informative dissertation. one of your best yet. Thanks for taking your time in the production of your videos. Again James, great effort
Thanks Gary!
great video James, got to luv floorboards with camlocks. keep it up brother
Sick. Best videos ever man
James- thanks for inspiring Me to pursue the A & P License. You make your job look fun & fulfilling. I'm an Advanced Automotive/ HVAC Technician.
Hey James, I just binged every maintenance video I can find on your channel. It was fantastic! It really sucks to see that you haven’t posted anything in a year. I hope you can get back to maintenance and flight videos. By the way Vincent is a great addition to your channel as well. Great crew you got there at Surfair!
Nice video and music, your job remind me of my old job and I did a lot of flying with bush planes all over northern Canada
As a working Avionics guy studying to get his A & P out here in South Florida I absolutely love the vids. Keep them coming 👍
Thanks Tom, I was in your neck of the woods last week for NBAA
Pretty cool videos man. Im pilatus pilot from Brazil, and i really enjoy how the systems works and how they are fixed. Keep going with you videos
Love to hear that!
Started watching your videos in 2018. Decided i wanted to do the same work as you.
I´m now done with my 2 year Part-147 B1.1 school to become a flight technician. Got my first job in aviation couple months ago and are now wrenching on Saab planes and ATR.
Great videos dude keep them coming and thanks
Keep the vids coming dude, good stuff!
nothing like a hard days work! well done.
thanks TJ - that was only half of my day lol! 14 hour day at work today...
upload more dude, its helpful especially those who wanted to go aviation.like me
Keep up the good work bro
Love the edit of you swinging the camera around from looking out the window, perfect cut to looking out the door on your arrival at Saint Carlos!
That is exactly what you should do with an entire PC-12 to yourself...pushupsI didn't know the seats turned to face each other. That is something to do when you aren't flying alone...make your neighbor super uncomfortable by turning and staring out their window. Or better yet, turn and face them but just read your book like it is completely normal and acceptable to be doing so while facing them...
Love you brother. Chat to you soon...
i love you too luke. and youre the only one who noticed that specific part of the edit (which was the hardest). and yeah, good plan. ill make someone else real uncomfortable next flight..
That was a cool edit! Like teleportation!
hey budy, greetings from philippines ,im a avionics fress grad making some research about working on airplane nd so on,i've been watching many of ure videos dude,u help me a lot thanks.
Great informative video
Great job
great to see a professional walk us through his profession first hand, while explaining his tasks intelligibly for the laypeople to understand... Hope to see more youtubers follow this model. helps younger kids gain awareness of reality and how they would like to build their careers. could've been perfect if you had shone your paycheck/cash at the end of the video, to give the viewers an idea of what the pay is like. Anyways, amazing vid!
Make more videos man !! Love the content
If I had a whole PC-12 to myself, I'd fly it around the country visiting cool little airports all over the country. Oh, you meant as a passenger. I guess I'd get in the right seat and ask for the controls. I hope to fly a PC-12 one day, they're on my bucket list.
It's a great plane to fly. I have about 1.5
Hey man! Im an Aircraft technician too and I really love your videos, I would love to do these videos myself at work but I work on military planes so Im not allowed to unfortunately. keep grinding and be safe out there man ! grettings from a brother in sweden
How do you like your job?
Hey, just happened to come across your videos. They're great and informative. Seems like you haven't made a video in a while. Hope all is well and you're still wrenching. I'm an apprentice train mechanic for BART in SF but I think I really want to work on airplanes one day. lol.
Just had this happen at 0300 this morning. Started as random Y/D disconnects without a Y/D fail cas advisory. Ended with random rudder trim runaways and AOG in Seattle.
Work done!
Awesome channel man! I'm working on my commercial pilots license and am hoping to work for you guys in the near future.
Need an upload my guy!!!! Miss your stuff.
we need more videos it's been too long!
3 weeks since a upload?? is everything ok James? I'm missing the awesome work vlogs man! You're what I wanna be in 2 years. Knowing everything their is to know to get the jobs done and being confident about your work ability!
Thanks Colton. All good here just been too busy to make a video. Hopefully I get a break soon
James Sullivan I was just joking around lol I completely understand, I'm super busy too. Keep up the good work
so much nicer than the places I run off to for AOG 47E work
Who do you work for?
Ornge Air Ambulance Ontario Canada
Awesome!
Love it.
We need more videos!!
First I would secure the cabin then ask for some zero g. Then I would become a complete pest and ask for stick time. I was in one couple of years ago with three of us but didn't know one of the pax in the back so entertainment was off the flight plan. Love them nice sports car
I was actually hoping to fly but we had a new first officer on board who wanted to. Hopefully that will be me soon.
we need more videos
Great video. Your Friend forgot her name was not in the right seat this time? What a great way to fly you do not have to deal with the airline mess.
Not this time and yeah I'm fortunate. Nothing beats private. Show up 15 minutes before take off. Even 5 minutes sometimes
Appreciate your reply.
nice videos
I never trusted electric trim at take off, cautious any time at low altitude due to possible run away trim. I'd pop the circuit breaker or use the on-off switch if available, then turn it on latter in the flight if using the autopilot.
Far from boring James, you know your stuff on the PC-12.
Keep making these videos u had your 3 year break lol
you are funny in a nice way
Hey James I am going to be in San Francisco in a couple weeks and would really like to meet you!
Send me an email. My address is listed on the about page for the channel. Hopefully we can make it happen!
I can't find your email address if you would send me a email at advorsky1968@gmail.com
NOT SURE WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU BUT I REALLY ENJOY THE VIDEOS YOU HAVE MADE YOUR JOB LOOK SO FUN IM 63 OLD AND BEEN IN AVIATION MY WHOLE LIFE WHAT HAPPENED! YOU SHOULD START VLOGING AGAIN PEACE OUT MAN
Pretty sure this dude is a pilot now :-) he went to the dark side
Inside voices Ed! And yeah haha I'm flying now full time and running a small maintenance/management firm on the side. Life got busy.
thanks for getting back you are inspiring to younger folks that generation doesnt want to work great videos and much prosperity to you fly safe good luck sir
@@JamesSullivans James, you should do a quick update video next time you do something cool
LOL at the ending. :-)
Hi, great video. How much does the part cost?
yo dude, we need more vids. Make an update vid tellin us why u havent uploaded anythin!
James ready for some new videos
One month from this upload? Are you alive? CZcams misses you.
Alive and well, just busy :)
What was the ops check to verify the fix ? Is this considered Rll in your maintenance system ? I assume you hold a position that allows you to be your own inspector . I loved the road trips and they tested your ability to "MacGyver" things to get the job done when you're away from home base without maintenance stands and shop equipment.
FAA regulations class the most boring yet useful class ive taken so far lol. keep up the video's less then 2 years before i become a
A&P pretty pumped
Yup. The classes only get better, promise
im pretty excited for whats to come only wish i didn't go for a bachelor's degree in aviation maintenance. You live and you learn i guess thats life.
Ah if you can afford it the bachelor's will pay dividends down the road. Where are you studying?
Not sure how to tell you but there is an interesting article in the May 27, 2018 issue of the New York Times on the need for more pilots. ( I know you are one but....)
Hey James, Shouldn't the rudder trim fail safe by turning itself off?
why aren't you uploading bro? looking forward for the next video
Hi James re: trim runaway issue, how frequently does that occur? Being non deferred maintenance I gather it's a very serious issue. Are there other redundancies in place to override the trim if that module fails?
+GonePro27 great question. There are two different ways that I know of to disable the system in the event of a runaway. One is the trim interrupt switch the other is pulling the system circuit breaker. These methods would be listed in the pilots quick reference handbook
Are the electronics under the floor sealed off from any liquids that may come in from the cabin floor? i can imagine bad things happen if someone spills a drink. :o
hello, Iam also an aircraft technician and u seem to have a rather interesting and fun work environment. i may be looking into changing jobs and was curious how your pay vs cost of living is and how manageable/comfortable it is out there. I currently live in Oklahoma and work for the airforce, which is good pay and benefits but working in aviation for the government isnt always enjoyable or interesting in the sence that i dont often get to utilize all of my training. your job at surf looks so much more enjoyable but its difficult to justify a change considering the great pay and benefits i currently receive. all info or advice would be appreciated. thanks.
I'm still in the process of getting my a&p but would you recommend joining the airforce for further knowledge on general aviation ?
Yes. The Air Force is a great way to learn aircraft maintenance. A crew chief on heavies is the way to go. Deuces!
So just curious: I suppose (since as pilots we for some reason don't get access to the maintenance manual) there are 2 normally open relays in that box. one that gets a signal to command right rudder, and one that gets a signal to command left rudder. How can a trim runaway actually happen if they are both NO relays? Only reason I could see is if a) the device sending the signal keeps sending the signal for some reason, or b) if the contacts of the relay actually melted closed (forgive me, I have no idea what is in the box..). Thanks for the great videos as usual - would have been very interested in the Operational test though! ;)
I look in the wiring diagram next time I work and see if I can answer your question. As for your two reasonings I would agree either is possible however since the issue was corrected by changing the box reason a) can be ruled out
Where'd you go Bae? :(
So there is no manual (cable) connection between the cockpit and the rudder trim? Meaning, in a runway condition I presume the pilots pull the breaker to stop it and then have to continue to fly at whatever rudder trim setting it was at?
Correct. On the PC-12NG the trims are all electric. In the event of a runaway you would interrupt the trim and then be left flying the aircraft out of trim. In the case of pitch trim (obviously more critical) there is an alternate trim switch which controls a second trim motor located in the same actuator as the primary motor.
James, hows is job security for a&p mechanics.
James, I always had this idea that before you remove-to-replace any module from the plane, don't you have to disconnect the plane from any power source to prevent any short or long term electrical damages?
As long as you follow the manual procedures you should be fine. Some tasks call out disconnecting the batteries (like replacing MAU cards) but in this case just pulling circuit breakers to isolate the system was enough.
Roughly how much did that little box cost?
What is the "nose" on the vertical stabilizer? is it hollow or contain something and if so, what?
It's a hollow fairing and I'm no engineer but I would guess it's for aerodynamics.
Inflight ping pong table
James how did you know that part you changed out was the problem before you installed the new one ?
Based on the failure mode. Also we sent a file to Honeywell and they confirmed
How long did that repair take? What a cool job man
Maybe 1.5 hours including the paperwork
Hey bud. So I’m going in getting employed by Surfair come this January. I’m supposed to fly to San Carlos for training. I’ve noticed that all CZcams videos on Surf air are 5 years old or older. Are you still with the company? I need updated information on Surfair.
You don't really have it to yourself...I thought I saw someone else up front doing the driving!
Yes true
Hey James I wanted to ask you why did you stick with private or corporate jets instead of commercial? I plan on doing the same thing just curious of why you did
It's a lot of different reasons. Maybe I'll get into it in a video. Mainly culture, non union, aircraft type, and diversity of work
James Sullivan I feel the same way, I'm in school now and my goal is to work private as well.
How is the pay from Surf Air for new A&P mechanics? I have about 8 months left at Spartan College to get my A&P
Currently starts at 21 for new mechanics. Lots of ot though
Is it a good idea to go to a tech school to become an Aircraft Mechanic?
I passed the first part of my general, studying for the airframe, hopefully soon...
Good luck just took PP now on to O&P
Quinn Ballard Awesome!
Need my op's... then on to pp!
Good luck girl you'll do well
On to O&P's!
Hi i am auto electric tech..how did you blame the trim servo controller? it could be input issue, power supply issue, or servo issue.. like in cars do you use diagnostic scanner for planes.....? Do you use amp clamp for diagnosing electronic problems..? IS Pc-12 has fly by wire systems..plus cables & pulleys. .? I am good at understanding electronic diagrams. .how about you...? How its vital..?
Understanding wiring diagrams and electronic diagnostics is important. In this case the aircraft downloaded a fault file that pointed to the trim adapter. Kinda took the guesswork out of it.
I wanna pursue a career as aviation maintenance technician and was wondering do they usually get called up to go to another location as you do to work on aircraft ? Btw I plan on attending the national aviation academy in new England . Do you have any thoughts on that school ?
It depends on where you work and what your job is. Many techs don't travel at all. As for the school I haven't heard of it but maybe someone else can chime in. Let me know if you have any other questions
Thank you!! I will let you know because Aviation seems fun !!
Thank you!! I will let you know because Aviation seems fun !!
Get some air hours in.
So that small box that noone touched can crash that plane if it decides to fail?
yup, welcome to Aviation
Hopefully your bosses weren't all on your back to get the plane out of there. In the airline, we go AOG on the broken part, but we would find ANY kind of excuse to have the plane fly. MELs, CDLs, NEFs (if that even applies to flight control), pull the breaker and just speed tape the darn thing, as long as it flies somewhere where someone else can fix it. Laziness could also play a factor, but oh well
Management is really great here. Our maintenance is all part 91 which means we are signing off with our licenses. I've never been pressured to sign off a plan that I didn't think was safe to fly. I will leave in a heartbeat if that ever changes
your airline sounds familiar to me Music...
what would happen if someone spilled a large amount of liquid on the floor in the PC-12?
Terrible things
James Sullivan does that box have a sealed lid?
You should be sitting in the copilot seat.... thats where id be.
That's where I would have liked to be too. Another pilot stole that seat before I could.
James Sullivan Aha ok, I couldn't tell if the seat was empty or not from the video.
tip and trick to take the faa powerplant general and airframe test plz. Bc I'm be taking the the test in two weeks and have study myself to death.
Study the ASA books for the writtens. Theyre the same questions.
yeah just study the books for the written and oral. the practical you should get with someone who has used the same examiner youre using and ask them what to expect.
I can hardly wait! I've been studying prepware on the airframe, didn't get to test before I got out of school in Dec, it's much harder to keep on top of it out of school.
MOHAMMED .MUSTABI How did it go?
the school is called aviation high school its in new york
Sleep, I wud be passed out back to L.A
Hello James what school did you go to?
I understand you have to flight on the plane you fix. That´s correct? A new method to ensure you make a correct job or crash with the plane? :)
You dont have to fly on the plane you fix, but you have to sign off the repair. He was just returning home on the plane he fixed. A remove and replace such as this is considered a minor repair and can be signed off by an A&P. A major repair or alteration has to be signed off by an IA which i believe he is as well.
Do you see the smile face after the message?
lol true that im an IA and youre right its a minor repair. about flying back on the plane i fixed, sometimes i like messing with our pilots and telling them ill catch the next flight ;)
Javier Enrique Traid When I was still a working IA, I always did my best to accompany the owner and fly the first flight out of heavy maintenance and when I had time, after routine minor service/maintenance. As a rule they love it and I got stick time on a variety of aircraft, some of them really cool. That is when I worked for myself and not at an FBO or school. Even at the FBO's I occasionally flew. Atleast half of my flight time over the years was this way even if I couldn't log it all.
Today's flight was with the chief pilot so I was really hoping to fly with her again.... At least she was okay with me goofing off in back
did this cost more than 3K?
Posted 46 seconds ago?!
Someone found time to edit on their flight!
Great music choices, as always!
What's up man
Why didn't they let you fly the plane back?
can i take a ride with you all or how can i experice a ride in a PC -12 ?
I’m sure you’ve been asked before, but can’t find the answer in comment sections of your videos. What’s the future you’re seeing? Are you going to stay and flourish in your current employer or go airline?
Last year I switched over to flying full time and currently getting ready to upgrade to captain with my new employer Boutique Air on the PC-12. I also started a maintenance company and continue to work as an A&P mechanic on the side.
@7:07 What would I do if I had a whole PC12 to myself? Ask for some zero G dives !
As for boring? No way, your office is million times better than mine especially @6:45.
you got it right - pretty dope office
What's the cost of that part?
I doubt it's cheap. We're on a parts program so I'm not sure how much it ended up costing
