I really enjoyed that video and definitely agree on English Settlement from Swindon's finest. My favourite Kate Bush album will always be The Kick Inside but I totally get the reason people go for Hounds of Love and The Dreaming. I'd love to see a Joni Mitchell shootout or a Jam/Style Council/ Weller solo shootout.

Based on your recommendation I took a punt and thank you so much for recommending this album. I have since gone deep with several of their other albums including the ‘Dukes’ and I am loving it. I love some of the songs on Tommy, but not the entire album,"Who's Next" is a favorite of mine. Rubber Soul is my favorite Beatles album (today)...tomorrow it will be Abbey Road who knows, it's all about our moods. We have so many wonderful albums to choose from. Another winner Mazzy. Statistically speaking, I think you favor double plus albums in these rankings. But that makes sense since you get more music to like from them relative to a single record. For example, pound for pound, Workingman's Dead bests Europe '72, but Europe gives you 3-times as much music.
Although we are the same age you were a bit ahead of me maybe because of where we grew up, I don't know but as you listened to the Byrds I was listening to Bill Evans. I did catch up and grab that west coast thing eventually. You're a true child of the 60's and that is a great thing. Thanks for reminding us of the music of our lives and the politics that goes with it.
Hi Mazzy. I recently got a copy of The Dreaming finally after years of looking....I think it's quite a challenging record overall. I like it but haven't got to 'love' yet. I have a photo of me as a kid standing the eye of the Uffington Horse. I tell people that whenever I see them show English Settlement. Cheers, James
I just bought the 2019 Europe 72 reissue by Chris Bellman from the Acoustic Sounds site. I’m glad you put your stamp on it. I’ve got WITHOUT A NET on wax and Dead Set too, but they both sound corny. I got to see the real Grateful Dead once when I was 14 in 1993. Never saw Tom Petty live. My biggest “experience” regret.

You had me at Buffalo Springfield Again, one of my all time fav's, love Last Round also. Miles was always interesting, but love the In a Silent Way era especially, Filles of Kilimanjaro and Sorcerer, all three are interchangeable in my mind....first era of Fleetwood Mac is great, don't know a another band that pulls off three great guitarist like them, though I do like Kiln House a lot also, Cream sometimes suffer from no songs syndrome or very thin on songs but obviously they had a huge audience that liked the 'hits', Elton up until Caribou great in my book, still love Kick Inside but agree with The Dreaming, boy, XTC is a hard one but English Settlement was a apogee of all they had done before, personal fav, close second to Black Sea or Dukes, not a Dead fan perse but I don't begrudge those who do, Pink Floyd.....Obscured By Clouds is a personal fav but can't argue with DSM, I have more Neil Young than any other artist outside of Beatle related, mainly because he is so prolific. Alright, loved this video, my comments are rather long when I comment and want to thin them out, failed on this one. Love The Who by Numbers, first contemporary who album I bought when it came out. Thanks Mazzy....Revolver was the first record I bought with my own money, age 8 in '71...totally agree

XTC fanatics (guilty!) would point out you held up the Amercian single-disc "English Settlement" and not the gorgeous British double-record embossed cover.... but I won't. (lol) ... GREAT choices!!!! "English Settlement" is my favorite, as well... (closely followed by "Apple Venus" and "Nonsuch"...), Kate Bush's "The Dreaming" was amazing, as well! (LOVED "The Ninth Wave" on "Hounds of Love"... her very best suite / song... but The Dreaming is my favorite.) I'd go "Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy" for Elton John... but it's an embarrassment of riches. I agree with KID A, as well. For Neil Young, the album that hit me first was "Rust Never Sleeps." Adore that one. Thank you for the other picks... and I've got some listening to do based on your picks. Difficult to imagine any top ratings list without including a Leonard Cohen and The Band picks. I’m Your Man and the “brown album” would be my picks - or maybe “Songs from Big Pink” or “You Want it Darker”? Always enjoy your thoughtful posts!
I spent a year (1984-85) listening only to three artist: the Smiths, Jane Siberry and of course, Kate Bush. I love all the KB albums from then and after. I always said my favourite was the Dreaming but now I think it is Hounds of Love because of side 2. Elton John-Captain Fantastic/Neil Young-Harvest Moon/Stones-Black and Blue for me. Regardless of people’s favourites, what a great collection of artists and discographies. ❤️
Summer of '84 I experienced my first Dead show (Blossom Music Center) and my life was forever changed. I've grown to appreciate a few 80s bands like The Smiths, The Cure, etc. in the last few years but still prefer late 60s/ early 70s music by a long shot.

Objectively speaking the music was better then 😎, I think we can agree. The Stones, Beatles, the Doors, Velvet Underground and the list just goes on and on.

I probably would have been banging my head to heavy metal through the 80s if a friend hadn't steered me towards The Doors, Ten Years After, Moody Blues, and Jimi Hendrix. The Dead weren't on my radar so I'm not sure why I went to that show since we were small town hicks and going to concerts required some commitment in terms of $$ and travel. That 60s-era SF sound is now my favorite, hands down. My LA-raised wife grew up on "80s" music so I play that for her once in a while to keep the peace. 🙃

Arthur from The Kinks came out the same year and IMHO is way more superior in concept, melodies, and depth. Ray Davies is the bar of songwriters IMHO.

Darkside of the Moon is a PERFECT Record. I heard it before it was finished at a German 3-day festival in 1973. They kept playing it over and OVER and O V E R again.... I had 300 Grams of Opiated HASH it took most of the day to realize I was listening to the same album over and OVER and O V E R again! ;) _the pot was $0.30 cents a gram! what could I do... SHARE! :)
Mazzie. I Love Ya Man! I love your videos! And you insights. BUT PLEASE....GET A LAVALIER MICROPHONE! Your voice sounds like a person talking on speaker phone from far away. Lavalier mics don't cost much and you can get a looooooonnnnnng extension cord to move around the room. Basic sound rule - The closer the mic is to the voice, the better the sound. So please, for us, get yourself a lav mic.....PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZE...???
22:32 In junior high school, I had a friend (my age) that was musically sophisticated because he had 2 older brothers that were "college radio dudes". Now this was during the era of Boston's first LP and Toys in the Attic. Thus ; he made me a cassette of Kink's Preservation Society and ; in a dinky , quaint way- I enjoyed it . Fast forward to the mid-late 1980s - and I am working in a used record store. I put on a copy of Preservation Society and my mind is blown & rekindled at the same time! Instant Desert Island Disc for me. The REALLY difficult thing is talking about this to people who only know the MONSTROSITY known as Preservation Act 2 (!) -- and they confuse the 2 ! LOL. (Truth be told- I like 2 songs on Act.2 ).

Kid A bsolutely! Never had the chance to listen to the Buffalo Springfield in my record heyday of dollar bins in the late 80’s as CD’s downsides hadn’t been completely revealed. Now I’m chomping at the bit. Great XTC pick. Dark side…agree wholeheartedly. Not over-ranked. It’s that good. Comes a Time sticks hard with me….have to review. Stone are a tough one. What a run of great records. Ziggy makes me giddy. The kinks are a major absence in my collection and I love them every time I hear them. Got lucky with the Bob Dylan mono box. My first Boxset was the Eric Claptons Crossroads in the 80’s as it introduced me to his best work before the solo career. White Lp gets my vote-variety and that lo-if quality made it feel like the best band dropping unvarnished nuggets. Maybe it was my worn out copy? The Cure, Costello, The Clash…..The usual suspects. You’ve probably done all those already but bands you enjoy like hearing them for the first time. Also, my jazz knowledge is for crap. Picked up some Miles, Blakey, but treated with more rarified air so more difficult to know exactly where to go. Deprived of these sounds growing up in my small Mt. Town. Pre-War loves ya’ back!
I'll agree that this is a very good list for 60's and 70's records. My list would be similar for those decades. You have only 3 albums from the 80's so I would take them out and I would do an 80's list. If I do an all time list would be only records from the 80's and 90's. To me those two are the best decades. The 70's would be next, then the 2000's and the last two would be the 2010's and the 60's.

100% agree with XTC and KATE BUSH, but THE WHO SELL OUT will be always be my fav of them, THE KINKS Something Else, BOWIE eehhhhmmm too difficult ,maybe LOW or Scary Monsters just because it's the perfect combination of the pop and experimental side of him, anyway all great albums to listen to!!!
10:49 Late 1980s. When I first got this LP , I made a cassette for my Aiwa walkman and would get high on pot & take long walks at night thru the quiet neighborhoods. This is slightly better than The Dreaming.

I've only managed to, just about, tolerate about two Rolling Stones tunes over the years. Music for Wankers their opus, apparently. Just watched, briefly, a BBC documentary on them, came out last week. Got me thinking, they have been generating pop music for 62? years, is this a record for a band of this ilk? So I looked it up, some argue the Beach Boys beat them by a year. Remarkable!
The brilliant, socially-conscious song Melt the Guns was only 30 years ahead of its time. English Settlement is a fuckin masterpiece as are a few other XTC gems.

They got worse as they went along and then they got an a BIG JOLT of LIFE with Dukes of the Stratosphere (Yes, some fans think "Dukes.." is the best thing they ever did).

I like 70s Elton John too. That's my favorite Elton album as well. Nominated for a Grammy, but Carol King Tapestry won the award.

Mazzie. I Love Ya Man! I love your videos! And you insights. BUT PLEASE....GET A LAVALIER MICROPHONE! Your voice sounds like a person talking on speaker phone from far away. Lavalier mics don't cost much and you can get a looooooonnnnnng extension cord to move around the room. Basic sound rule - The closer the mic is to the voice, the better the sound. So please, for us, get yourself a lav mic.....PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZE...???
22:32 In junior high school, I had a friend (my age) that was musically sophisticated because he had 2 older brothers that were "college radio dudes". Now this was during the era of Boston's first LP and Toys in the Attic. Thus ; he made me a cassette of Kink's Preservation Society and ; in a dinky , quaint way- I enjoyed it . Fast forward to the mid-late 1980s - and I am working in a used record store. I put on a copy of Preservation Society and my mind is blown & rekindled at the same time! Instant Desert Island Disc for me. The REALLY difficult thing is talking about this to people who only know the MONSTROSITY known as Preservation Act 2 (!) -- and they confuse the 2 ! LOL. (Truth be told- I like 2 songs on Act.2 ).

Dark side…agree wholeheartedly. Not over-ranked. It’s that good. Comes a Time sticks hard with me….have to review. Stone are a tough one. What a run of great records. Ziggy makes me giddy. The kinks are a major absence in my collection and I love them every time I hear them. Got lucky with the Bob Dylan mono box. My first Boxset was the Eric Claptons Crossroads in the 80’s as it introduced me to his best work before the solo career. White Lp gets my vote-variety and that lo-if quality made it feel like the best band dropping unvarnished nuggets. Maybe it was my worn out copy?
The Cure, Costello, The Clash…..The usual suspects. You’ve probably done all those already but bands you enjoy like hearing them for the first time. Also, my jazz knowledge is for crap. Picked up some Miles, Blakey, but treated with more rarified air so more difficult to know exactly where to go. Deprived of these sounds growing up in my small Mt. Town.

I'll agree that this is a very good list for 60's and 70's records. My list would be similar for those decades. You have only 3 albums from the 80's so I would take them out and I would do an 80's list. If I do an all time list would be only records from the 80's and 90's. To me those two are the best decades. The 70's would be next, then the 2000's and the last two would be the 2010's and the 60's.
Yeah when I make more ranking videos of later bands they will be included.

100% agree with XTC and KATE BUSH, but THE WHO SELL OUT will be always be my fav of them, THE KINKS Something Else, BOWIE eehhhhmmm too difficult ,maybe LOW or Scary Monsters just because it's the perfect combination of the pop and experimental side of him, anyway all great albums to listen to!!!

10:49 Late 1980s. When I first got this LP , I made a cassette for my Aiwa walkman and would get high on pot & take long walks at night thru the quiet neighborhoods. This is slightly better than The Dreaming.

21:55 Again, I go against the popular vote. I like Ziggy , however - I really really feel that Bowie's APEX was Aladdin Sane thru Diamond Dogs . Ziggy has too many sleepy songs like Five Years (REALLY boring) , Rock N' Roll Suicide and the half-baked Starman (I always wished this song was FASTER ) . (Of course, I'm DUCKING the punches now).

I've only managed to, just about, tolerate about two Rolling Stones tunes over the years. Music for Wankers their opus, apparently. Just watched, briefly, a BBC documentary on them, came out last week. Got me thinking, they have been generating pop music for 62? years, is this a record for a band of this ilk? So I looked it up, some argue the Beach Boys beat them by a year. Remarkable!

The brilliant, socially-conscious song Melt the Guns was only 30 years ahead of its time. English Settlement is a fuckin masterpiece as are a few other XTC gems.

They got worse as they went along and then they got an a BIG JOLT of LIFE with Dukes of the Stratosphere (Yes, some fans think "Dukes.." is the best thing they ever did).
