Keep in mind that "STD" is an acronym of an ENGLISH phrase and means absolutely nothing to Koreans; AND they aren't even referred to as "STDs" anymore in English, but as "STIs".
The rap crew he belonged to before moving to Seoul and joining BigHit was called "Daegu Town". His solo name is "SUGA" backwards with DT (Daegu Town) added backwards as well. - Agust D... and it is pronounce "August Dee"

  • @suga_rush
    @suga_rush Před 4 měsíci +43

Since he already had used 'flow job' in Cypher Pt 3 it's unlikely that he didn't know what an STD was. A lot of the interpreters translate 'fack' in the lyrics as 'fake', but the translator took a lot of liberties in the translation for the video and still kept the word 'fack'. I think this is a reference to Eminem's 'Fack' that also messes around with censorship. The context to this song is that underground rappers look down on idols and with RM and SUGA being from the underground - they were even more nasty to them.
Idols are supposed to have a clean image and that includes not swearing - not in songs or otherwise. This was seen as a strike against them. If a song has swear words it does not get broadcast or receive radio-play South Korea. A workaround to this is releasing a clean version, but SUGA/Agust D didn't do that. This was his middle finger to underground rappers who ridiculed him by assuming that he wouldn't be able to swear and the industry that tries to box him in. He intentionally uses a lot of swear words and sexual innuendos & undertones just to mock them. SUGA recently said in an interview, "Even if I swear in my lyrics, they don't attack me for some reason. 'How can a idol use swear words in his lyrics?' - nothing like that. 'That wasn't strong for him' - those are the reactions I get."
The entire chorus has innuendos. This is an example of the lyrics not being translated as accurately as possible - He doesn't say 'y'all get turned on by my tongue technology'. He says, 'My tongue technology sends y'all to Hong Kong with my rap'. 'Sending someone to Hong Kong' is a South Korean euphemism for the big 'O'. The second time he says it, he omits the 'with my rap' part and just says 'I send y'all to Hong Kong with my tongue technology'. You just know he's messing with them at this point.
D-boy has two meanings in the US - rappers from Detroit and a dope peddler. SUGA is also from a town that starts with D - Daegu. He is highlighting that the D in his name comes from Daegu. This is a throwback to his lyrics from a previous BTS song tilted 'Ma City' (around the same time he was writing lyrics for Agust D) -
_I was born in Daegu and raised in Daegu_
_It’s a bit hard for me to receive blood transfusion_
_In my body runs blue blood_
_“This kid doesn’t seem to get tired of talking about Daegu in every album,”_
    _you might think_
    *I’m a d boy, yeah I’m a d boy*
_To be honest, there’s not much to brag about Daegu_
_The fact that I was born there is the pride of Daegu_
    _Yeah? Ah yeah_
_Having nothing to brag about makes you be the one to be bragged about, don’t you think?_
_A-yo “He’s the most successful guy from Daegu,”_
_I’m going to hear those words, now keep your eyes on me_
_I’m the pride of Daegu, the new wind of the new generation_
    _Daegu’s past, present, and future_
This is my interpretation but I think he also makes a reference to the second meaning with later lyrics in Agust D - 'all ya fried rappers should be thankful for I am an idol'. Drugs are extremely illegal in South Korea. Additionally, idols can't especially do those (if they do and they get caught their career is over). However it was seen as an essential part of the underground rap scene in South Korea for "inspiration" and this was another strike against them that being mainstream they don't do drugs.
But with both these meanings, and the elimination the 'a' before D boy in this song I interpreted the line as - I'm thee boy not because I need to drugs to look tough, but because I'm already tough for making it from a small town to the international stage. That's just my theory, but I wouldn't put it past him. He tends to build a train of thought by referencing previous lyrics and he condenses various ideas into a few words. He also made a similar point in Daechwita - 'Shut up, yeah, you calling me a pup. I was born a tiger, I ain't no weak pill-popper like you'.
He also makes a clever Korean movie reference in this song, and there's even more wordplay, but I've already written an essay lol.
This was the song that I used to just enjoy in the beginning, but later realized how direct and clever he was with the unfair criticisms they were facing at that time.

plus why would he release a clean version when the song/mixtape were released for free in the first place. the first two mixtapes were not promoted like pls be serious.
Also bts/yoongi have cursed in their music from the beginning lol the kpop bs standards don't apply to them and they have never particularly cared about it too. Just because they don't go around swearing and cursing in every song doesn't mean a thing lol even yoongi doesn't curse in every song of his

@@user-vv7hc7kb5oYeah, did no one tell you that throwing around insults for no reason at all stops being a power move once you leave the playground?
Do you not understand the terms 'I think' and 'my interpretation' or are you incapable of having a conversation with basic manners?
Yes, BTS/SUGA used to swear from the start but they haven't done that under that label since HYYH except for the hidden track 'sea'. They have a lot riding on them, so it was responsible of them and their label to avoid making explicit versions when they were very much in debt. This gave us a lot of creative bars which I thoroughly enjoy.
"Idols are supposed to have a clean image and that includes not swearing - not in songs or otherwise. This was seen as a strike against them. If a song has swear words it does not get broadcast or receive radio-play South Korea. A workaround to this is releasing a clean version, but SUGA/Agust D didn't do that."
You went off an whole tangent. Where do I say it wasn't a mixtape? In-fact that is my point, that neither RM nor SUGA commercialized these songs back then, when agencies mostly try to commercialize everything that idols do. Also, nowhere am I saying that this was the only or even first song where they swear. This isn't a secret. I'm just saying that they were making a point and they themselves have said that they wanted to show how raw they were back then. SUGA himself says that that's why he created Agust D. They were accused of being sell-outs who chose commercial success in exchange for their artistic liberty. What better way to prove this wrong than through a explicit mixtape? That was the point I was making. He is literally talking to pompous rappers throughout the song and he loves goading people. Why is it so far-fetched to see the song in this context?
RM and SUGA don't make clean versions for even their commercial albums. Because there is a history to this. It doesn't make sense for JK and Jimin to not make clean versions - they're in a different genre and this was not their issue.

Late comer here, BUT. About that time of their careers, the boys themselves have said how much anger they hold onto themselves bc of all the criticisms from every side (not being idol-type enough, 'leaving' the k-hiphop underground scene, and your normal haters keyboard warriors) without being able to do sht about it, except getting better at their craft, so they redirected those feelings towards their solo projects, specially RM (RM, mixtape, is full of samples, credits them all, to mention some songs 'Rush', 'Do you', 'Throwaway') and Suga (AGUST D, should check out 'give it to me' and 'The Last', maybe Tony Montana, too).
By contract and standard PR work from the industry they were now tied to and were part of (which is very strict about lawsuits over copyrights, defamation, and such, and that they make prison time over maria juana in their country) they couldn't make more direct addressing nor diss an specific person/rapper/artist and engage in beef or diss battles aside from what they were permitted in the Cyphers and their solos. And oh, believe me, fans of the scene (the k-side of music) are very aware of who they 'may' be referring to, and is full of tea.
At the time Daechwita was released (D-DAY, 2020) there already were various scandals in SK about some idol rappers (that did their part and wrote their things, well, the majority) consuming happy pills and other things, and it being tied with the underground scene, so AgustD saying things about pill poppers in Daechwita ruffled some feathers around there.
Only one public diss was that of Bobby (from iKON) to RM, to which he replied and stopped there, but in good faith. RM knew it was part of the hiphop scene.

His song is named Agust d, because that was the birth of his alter ego Agust d. He kinda spoiled his new name in bts Cypher 3 and then released a mixtape with new stage name for his solo actions.

Fun fact- 'DT' in his name refers to his hometown of Daegu AND the underground rap crew he was in before BTS. They were called Daegu Town.

In my personal opinion, the spelling of his name could have been intentional. In the next lines, he references his "tongue technology" which is a double about oral sex and his rapping skills.

😂 rappers have songs with their stage name but the ones I can think of didn't literally title the song with their name. However the goal was the same which was to raise their awareness of who they are to the public...Snoop did it with 'what's my name?' And Eminem with 'my name is' .

He's spelling out his other stage name ( to be honest he has 3 stage names' as in the underground hip hop scene before he was BTS he was known as 'Gloss' a play on his name.)
Agust D is Suga T D meaning Suga T D stand for the Daegue the Town he's from. T standing of course for Town.

From the D / Daegu .. but everyone has said it already. AGUST D is SUGA backwards Town Daegu. and… STD is a very old Acronym.. it’s STI.. and he’s South Korean, but I’m sure if he thought it would makes its way to US audiences, someone would have told him. This was from his 1st Mixed tape, released for free on SoundCloud, for fans.. not public consumption. Kinda cool, right? 💜

Suga knows what he is saying.. Actually he knows about STD.. I'm sure.. If you read the lyrics.. There is a double meaning behind it.. That what makes this more interesting lmao.. He was talking about tongue technology.. I don't know if u guys know about Knox Hill.. But he is good at breaking down lyrics.. He got it when he reacted to it. btw Thanks for the reaction.
