As much as I think either Sora, Snake, or Sonic should get the spot as best, it feels like Sephiroth was just... It. Between the incredible-looking stage, his overwhelming power, and the extra challenge of beating him before release... plus, I mean, come on. Sephiroth is HIM. Nobody expected him, but EVERYONE accepted him. ... huh. I guess it's funny that my four choices start with an S.

what an amazing video! great work! as a huge Kojima fangirl, i'm really biased towards Snake, but i think i would give it to Sonic if he wasn't so clunky gameplaywise. Snakes moveset just feels so great in Smash, while also being really unique
It may be my bias showing, but I feel like Mega Man is the most important/best guest fighter. Not only because he was a point of pure and immense excitement when he was revealed, but also because I believe he changed the game entirely - I am convinced that the reason 3DS/Wii U had the custom move system was because they wanted to make as many Robot Master weapons as possible. Every other character had pretty lame custom options, Mega Man pulled from his vast history to really change up what he could do. But I think most importantly, Smash showed Capcom that people still love Mega Man, and I don’t believe we’d have the various Legacy Collections or Mega Man 11 if not for Smash. Mega Man is the best Smash character because his appearance there brought him back to life.
Without watching the video, I am typing this comment before I even watch it, I'm going to go out on a limb and that the obvious choice is a character whose name starts with the letter S and it could honestly be one of four characters: Snake, Sonic, Steve, and Sora. Snake because he was the first, Sonic because it kind of symbolized the end of Sega and Nintendo's legendary rivalry, I lived through it and I don't think I can understate how big of a deal it was that Sonic the Hedgehog was in a Nintendo game, Steve because, like the last case, it symbolized Nintendo and Microsoft burying a hatchet of sorts and working together, on top of his gameplay mechanic being the most unique out of any of the DLC characters, they literally had to reprogram every level in order to make him work as a character, and Sora because I genuinely think they had to do some legal gymnastics to even get him in the game, it was the first time they had to go through a media company that wasn't a video game developer to acquire a character, and gave us a bit of non video game Easter egg love with the Mickey charm. All four of those characters are characters that would have been deemed unlikely at some point in time due to how the games were made and all four were big surprises and welcome additions to the roster! If I had to pick what I would deem the most important, it would be Sonic, but I'm biased because I'm a Sonic the Hedgehog fan. With that being said, I'm sure Sonic would have come before him if Sega and Nintendo could have come to an agreement a little faster than Konami did, I feel like that's evident by the fact he is the only third-party character to appear in every Smash game since his inclusion, And although he is the only Sonic character we have so far, we have a lot more Sonic content in terms of stickers and the such, and he's one of the few guest characters that has multiple assist trophies and stages (correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Mega Man series has more than one assist trophy and the Final fantasy series has more than one stage, Sonic has two of each). Mark my words, if they don't do some kind of re-release for Ultimate for the next console with added characters, which is possible, One of the first new characters in the next Smash Bros game is going to be a Sonic character and I think it will be Shadow, what with all of the marketing Sega has been doing with him this year.
