Sampling of Agarikon from deep in the old growth forests - 2021

- Watch Paul & Dr. Pam Kryskow discover and retrieve a small sample of Agarikon from deep in the old growth forests of the Olympic National Park. Agarikon has many forms and this one was particularly clever in disguising itself from discovery ….at first. Our goal is to collect 100 strains of Agarikon (Fomitopsis officials = Lariciformes officials), conduct full genome sequencing, and test each strain for its potential medicinal properties. This is a lifelong effort. We hope to publish a monograph of our results in a few years. Stay tuned. We share this path together. Respect !

Paul is my hero. I've had a wonderful interest of learning more about mycology the past 2 to 3 years, and Paul ignited that interest. It's amazing what nature has to teach us and show us, if we only open ourselves to listen.
Just dont turn him into another GOD , thanks people . Let it be easy and normal .
Paul is one man. Let the subject be that which inspires you. The inconsistencies are blatant in some of the published works that can make one question things.
@@My3elium wow….same, precise thought i had as well. point right on.
Truly, the GOAT.
Well said!!
paul you are a modern day gandalf. freaking wizard powers with your Agarikon love ya peace
he's a regular cherry garcia, a regular chacky-chan, man! what's this agarikon fascination tho, like what're they good for, are they rare?
@@tinfoilhatter huh, uh, yeah. what is it good for? absolutely nothing
@@tinfoilhatter tuberculosis, for one property, and rare. Check out Stamets video documented search for these, they get big. fascinating story, stemming from use by natives.
@@ironrobin OK Elaine
@@davidgough3512 well then! thanks, yes, not to make-light-of the whole subject, i'm genuinely interested in all sorts of those things like diseases and funguses and whatnots! haha! diseases are not cool, some fungi, i understand, are!
Haha “i don’t like people who kick mushrooms, kids are an exception”😂😂 had me lol
Lol how about the "come closer and look at it" 😆😅 camera man standing like 10 feet away 🤣 😂
Truly a giant in a world of giants. Thanks for being a mycologist. Your talks and research have helped me and my girl friend to get past her cancer she is currently dealing with.
The mushrooms showed him the way.
nice, even chatting with random people at bar today, we somehow instantly got into mushrooms, Stamets and Wiz Hof...God Bless you and your GF

The world is a better place because of people like Paul Stamets.
Hi Paul! I'm glad to see you wandering around in that rainforest these days. As a bee keeper, I'm VERY interested in your progress with the maze-style honey bee feeder that you've teased us with in the past. Have you moved away from that design? The maze alone will go a long way in frustrating the marauding wasps aside from the promise of providing microbial benefits to the bees. Thank you in advance for any updates. :)
I'd love to see more about this as well, your studies have such a huge impact on the mushroom community and everything beyond, it's so cool! total mushroom hero status
If Paul put his ear to the mushroom, he would hear the mushroom say: "Paul, we love you" ;)
one droplet might be dangerous! we'll need to look further into that!
Is that before or after he stabbed it?
@@monkeyhed69 There is no before or after, love is eternal
@@ytrebiLeurT If you stab a person they don't have to keep loving you. Lucky for him the mushrooms don't feel the same because they know he was just taking a sample.
I keep hoping today is the day Paul Stamets will discover his holy grail, an agarikon super strain.
the size of a truck :D
@@carpo719 hey fish-man! but what're they good for?
Right? I hope it turns out that it actually _wasn't_ there yesterday, and that he's about to culture and preserve a strain that grows like wild.
we ❤️ u Paul. please keep saving us from ourselves! respect
When i am out i even replace moss kicked up by people, animal or machine. I love keeping the earth looking pristine . Thank you Paul
Paul, thank you for being the mushroom Lord 🍄 🙏 ❤
Paul, you have always been an inspiration to me. All my life living in the PNW I have been fascinated with mushrooms, and my favorite thing to do is take macro photos in situ. I would love to share some pics if you ever need any.
Thanks for taking the time to share. I have been making my own chaga/reishi/cordyceps/lions mane blend I make myself for immune system and mental function. Wonderful combo.
(Antiviral potential for current pandemic could be high with these babies!)
agarikon is one I am always fascinated by
Here in Oklahoma City , I notice so many people being wasteful & disrespectful to mother nature , Its refreshing to see posts like this . And everyone has to learn to leave things better than the way you found them. LOW IMPACT IS ESSENTIAL IN SAVING OUR PLANET
4 wheelers miss a lot visually, including what they grind under tread
Paul is the Hero the world needs.
I absolutely adore the positive energy Paul emanates. I feel good seeing people doing extremely important work for the love of something crucial. Paul is undoubtedly one the greats with Terence McKenna. Such an important figure in my mind.
Dennis McKenna has done so much as well.
@@vashlotus1891 yes indeed he did
I'd consider Paul as probably up there with all the great biologists. Pioneer of mycology.
@@thinginground5179 for sure
i can't help but love you both for just being considerate people towards all things
Thanks for taking us on this little journey.
*I think we can all agree that we wish to one day go hiking with Paul and explore different mushrooms*
To hell with celebrities, musicians, and royals. Give me the chance to hang out and garner some wisdom from Paul, anytime, any day. His passion, conviction, and overall wholesome nature, makes him the kind of person that is just infectious for all the good reasons.
A year ago I was in Olympia looking at a poster at the herb shop in downtown on red belted conks, now I’m on 10 acres of land preserving Red Belted Conks for the bees just like your poster, Thank you Paul. Doing it for the cave bears hahaha
Paul we love you! You're the very reason that i'm obsessed with mycology and for that reason i'm now a huge fan of nature. I live in nature. My plan is to one day live in a forest because of all u do! Thank you!💓💓💓
You inspire me, Paul.
All my admiration and respect.
While out hunting this September I found some expired puffballs and to help spread spores I gave them all some solid kicks. I did it for the greater good. Please forgive me Papa Stamets.
These uploads make my day when I see them
Amen! Respect the mushroom 😄 Cant wait to come back and see her again! Bless you all!
Light and love Paul! You are an amazing entity! Thankful grateful and a life long supporter!
Wow Paul, I wish I had discovered you sooner. I'm so intrigued with what you are teaching and your works. I went from never eating mushrooms my whole life to buying them for cooking every pay, to now watching and learning the amazing health benefits and earth benefits of mushrooms!!! I guess my cravings for mushrooms was telling me something... thank you for doing what you are doing, I can't stop watching your vids. Wish I could go foraging with you and learn heaps more so will forage with you virtually!! How amazing to have these beautiful forests as part of your workplace.
I started with the magic kind, but grow them all now. I can't walk past a mushroom now without stopping to look at it, just like I can't see Paul without stopping to click on the video. Your a real hero and a real nice guy.
"Beem us up" - Had me cracked up a bit hehe
I know absolutely nothing about funguses, however this man just looked so happy and welcoming I just had to click
I agree that people should not kick mushrooms and the aesthetics are to be just as valued as the other aspects! Beautiful Mushroom!
You are a hero of man! 👍🤘🤙
Thank you Paul for your amazing work, you are an inspiration to me and many others. There's nothing like a teacher who truly loves their work it really shines through!
Part of a tree fell down on my property. There was 1/2 a basketball sized mushroom that was also separated from the tree. I felt bad for it. I put it in a garden area to decompose
Not a mycologists, just a biologist (student haha). This is cool! Keep up the good work.
Every video I see of you I feel like your voice is literally hugging my brain with fungal love. I totally get it - I fear my enthusiasm might make me ill one day, I just hope that is all that happens.
Thank you for connecting me to the network ☮️❤️😁
At my desk, looking across Puget Sound towards the Olympics, thrilled and grateful you’re out there in the old growth collecting and giving us a peak…”it beats being in the office!”
Can anyone go out there? If so I am amazed it's still intact.
We’re on the peninsula 💚 Life out here is beyond words 💚 Lifelong Washingtonian 🥂🌲💚 There is nowhere else I’d rather live! Rain and all!
I love these little peaks into what you guys are up too! As a Vancouverite I feel like its my back yard :D

Thank you Mr. Stamets!
Always a thrill stumbling across a friend in the forest. Glad to see you Paul 😁 hope you and the family are all well!
That is a rare beautiful sight indeed, I really need to move into a more forested area so when it rains similarly to this I can hunt for the treasures like Paul. Thats such a cool growth, it reminds me of a deadly cone-snail.
That's awesome!

Awesome idea with the bandaids. I'll be adding them to my backpack. Cheers!
Not the foremost method, but affordable, light, compact and dual use.✌️👍
@@davidgough3512 what technique do you like?
@@JustDrew1t i was thinking of sterile capped test tubes and stick on labels.. ready for the lab and uncrushed specimens.. with some trapped air so they don't mush. But backpack hiking has other criteria, such as the mentioned lightness and compactness. They were collecting for tissue propogation, but normal collecting it's a basket and some little paper sacks to keep'em seperated yet able to stay airy crisp. Save room for butter salt and small frypan😁
@@davidgough3512 that's a great idea too! I actually have some test tubes. Lol why did I think of that. Thanks for sharing your idea!
We have several rare species of native (Driloleirus) earthworms in the local coastal mountains of Oregon. I have found some that exceed two feet in length. I am no expert, but I'd bet they have a special relationship to the mycelium that grows around the fir and alder trees. One of these giant Driloleirus earthworm varieties I found has not been described in scientific literature or named yet, though I have submitted specimens for study and DNA research.
They do! And I know this because of research on earthworms, I cant say exactly what the relationship is but I know it exists. Do you have any more info on the relationship between earthworms and mushrooms?
@@asmrfoodieuk7965 I am not an expert and have only my opinions based upon my own observations. In this case the Driloleirus earthworms I have found sometimes have a faint odor that to my nose is quite similar to a fragrance found in the forest soils and plant material on top of the soil. My nose tells me there must be a relationship between the bacteria and fungi growing in the soil. I suspect the worms feed upon it and that is where their fragrance comes from. A couple of taxonomists have looked at the worm to study its form and a university has done some DNA research that I don't understand, but NOBODY has studied the gut of these worms to see what they eat yet. Nobody has actually studied the worm to know anything about its world. Nobody.... As far as I know, I am the only person in the world that gives a hoot about them.
Old growth has a different feel. Ancient and wise. Wish we had more of that in Ohio.
I love walking through old growth woods, it really is amazing. I have a favorite spot I go camping and hiking in Darrington WA (Paul Stamets has a house up there too lol) called Slide Lake, it's about an hour and a half drive into the mountain roads (illabot creek road FYI, should you ever find yourself in the area) a bit North of Darrington, there are old growth trees on the trail into the lake that are 8 to 10 feet in diameter, they absolutely dwarf everything around them. I have a picture of my 6' tall little brother standing in front of one that makes him look like a tiny little kid lol. It's a beautiful place.
wish we had more of that everywhere
I hope we get deeper into agarikon research with more videos!
This is so awesome. I’ve only started to learn about mushrooms and the world of fungi. I can tell you I wish I would have known about it all sooner and been more educated about it. It’s so important
