We need to have an honest conversation about smoking: The problem with smoking is that it is way more than just a physical addiction.
Smoking creates a temporary problem and offers an instant solution. Once your brain is used to nicotine, for up to 72 hours you are itchy,
nervous and stressed - but one drag and instantly, you feel really good. It also helps you focus and take breaks during work, while suppressing your appetite.
So why is it such a bad idea?

How did the sponsor sign off on this video title lol
Lol. I'm dying at the fact the with all the things the birbs have gone threw, they drew the line at being involved with the smoking video.
This video started so positive and slowly turned into nightmare, but that's what smoking is
that's such a good observation nice hmm
Best comment
The transition looked way faster to me but yes I agree
That's very true, that might have been purposeful... you see all the positives laid out and then argues against them by talking about the wide scale permanent damage
All additions get like this tbh
Please turn this into a series. I really want to see "Heroin is Awesome"
I was thinking of alcohol but heroine is awesome too
Bruh Walter after that would be even crazier
Well as a regular user of meth and alco, would love to see those explaining in less "dont do it its a sin!" Scripted way rather scientific way of explaining why my habits are bad
Ironically this vid is motivating me since i try to quit for a month.
“Crystal Meth is Awesome”
@@tolstartheking it is tho
Please turn it into a serie. We absolutely need "Alcohol is amazing"

Holy shit yes we do
"It makes a temporary problem and gives a instant solution" That really sums up most addictions really well.
the kicker is the permanent damage
Short term solution, long term problem
I'm 44 started smoking cigarettes at 15, I'm always coughing up nonstop, this video dumbed it all down for me. Now I know exactly what I'm experiencing and why. I think I'm ready to make the move and quit! I'm gonna die soon if I don't. Quit drinking 8 years ago, I was an everyday beer drinker. If I can stop drinking and never look back, I can stop smoking too! Wish me luck people, I quit smoking at midnight! ****update below ***
Update: almost 3 weeks without smoking. The habitual cravings are definitely getting farther apart than before. still getting them for sure ,but they definitely aren't as bad as the first week or so. My body is realizing and remembering that I no longer smoke, so basically when I get a sudden urge to I'm like " oh yea I no longer do that" and just continue with my day. Cravings only last a few seconds to a minute at most. So I immediately just try to continue with whatever I was already doing and move on,. Works like a charm. I still do push ups but not at every craving anymore. The physical addiction was gone in 72 hours. That was the worst of it. After that it was much easier. Chewing gum seems to help keep your mouth busy and helps for sure. My sense of taste and smell has improved considerably. I do not cough nearly as much as before. My lungs feel lighter if that makes any sense, and i honestly feel much better!
Anyone who wants to join me on this journey of quitting, or would like to help, feel free to join my channel! I'm considering on sharing my journey of quitting drinking and smoking cigarettes with the world, in hopes that maybe I can possibly help someone else do the same! Thank you all for your support, you probably helped save my life!
Rooting for you !
You can do it don’t give up, and good luck!
You got this man. God will help you if you let him (Deuteronomy 31:8).
Good luck! I'm cheering for you! I don't have any experience with smoking, or quitting, but you may want to make sure you have family/friends if possible. Let them know so they can support you. Having a support group is the best thing you can have. Good luck again! Hope to hear updates as you progress and quit smoking!
You can do it!
"smoking only solves a temporary problem but creates permanent ones"
This video should be shown in every school.
Not the title though
The title is actually genius it is way more like that ppl that are starting to smoke will click on a video with a title like this and get hit with education xD.
No.
We already torment children with endless anti drug propaganda.
Nor is that even true. It doesn't "only solve temporary problems", whatever the fuck that's supposed to mean.
True
They do tell us all this in American schools. A lot of times. Didn't stop me from picking up cigarettes.

I smoked a pack a day for 10 years. Quitting was rough but I haven’t had a single smoke in 7 years. Proud that I quit. It was really hard to quit and that’s what prevents me from starting again. I don’t want to be addicted to cancer sticks ever again
congrats on overcoming the addiction! :D
Great job! Not everybody can do what you did. Be proud, strive for health and greatness
Good for you! Do you have any tips for me? I would absolutely want to achieve your amazing achievement.
I puffed on my vape constantly for the first two months. It didn’t completely satisfy my urge to smoke but it helped minimize the cravings. I knew vaping was a better choice than going back to cigarettes but unfortunately you crave more than nicotine alone when you’ve been a smoker. You crave those other toxic chemicals as well unfortunately. Your body knows it’s not a cigarette. But like I said it helps with the cravings even if it doesn’t eliminate them.
The sad part is even to this day I sometimes crave a cigarette when I’m really stressed.
The cravings are much easier to manage and they go away a lot quicker than when I was first quitting but it’s an addiction that for many people never completely goes away. I wish I had known that when I started. I guess it’s more a mental addiction now.
0:27 Hey that’s me! The only things I light up are my grades though 😌

This is one of the better anti-smoking PSAs I've seen. No moralizing, no fear-mongering. Just facts.
I mena moralizing and fear-mongering are good strats, most people dont listen to logic
fear mongering is good for deterring people from addictions tho
@@Natsu_76 but it alienates people who are already addicted and makes it harder to reintegrate into healthy society
@@ikosaheadrombut fear-mongering doesnt edjucate you about the actual effects. The problem is that the fear-mongering comes from adults and is aimed towards children, and adults are rarely "cool" in their minds. Smoking becomes the cool thing to do. So in that regard fear-mongering is very unhelpfull.
I mean, no explicit verbal fear mongering, i suppose..? The visual language applied in parts that talk about cellular damage coupled with the eerie music is pretty powerful and leaves little room for questions as to what message is being conveyed.
I started smoking at 22 because I thought it would help me socially. I stopped at 23 after a few nicotine induced panic attacks. Went on to vaping but managed to stop that too. I don't know how my brain managed to take back control but watching this video made me feel so grateful that it did.
same here! when i was 17, i smoked for 2 months (at school, not home cause my parents would be sooo mad) and then realized i couldnt wait to go to school just to smoke. and when i got home, i couldnt help but think about tomorrow and smoke.. one day i thought "before its too late, before it becomes permenant i should quit" and i did it. best decision ever. in 5 years, i only smoked "one breath" for 3-4 times tops. gotta admit, it still feels good. i hope i wont ever start start again
how the stephen hawking reads file badwords.txt do you get panic from nicotine lol
@@supersst838 i didn't panic because of nicotine, i panicked because i didnt want to become addicted to cigarettes, thats why.
If you haven't done it very long, quiting isn't that hard because the habits aren't built up fully yet. Once smoking becomes a strong habit, it is when the addiction gets really bad.
Smoked a bit here and there, but never got addicted, can't even take the smell and never liked it really
i am 17 - almost all of my friends smoke and vape. I have had the casual desire to quit for a few years now, but damn, has this lit a fire under my ass. It always annoyed me when anti-smoking PSA's act like smoking is like stabbing yourself in the hand, that theres absolutly no reason at all any one would ever do it. This is the only thing that's ever actually connected (to me at least) and made the point properly. thank you kurzgesagt team
it's because smokers in my place were always so bitter about it. but my friends were literally coughing everyday for 1 year straight from smoking. I JUST DIDNT WANT TO ATTEND TO THEIR FUNERAL! it hurts like crazy.
It's much easier to take something away from a video, a lesson or a book that you bought because it justifies the time or money that you have spent on it, cus it's a much easier story to tell yourself rather than feeling regretful. Whereas I could give you exactly the same info as this video in person and on the first 30sec your ego will interupt me because it wouldnt allow one of your peers 'educating' you on whats good or bad.
I was a smoker for 17 years and I quit 2.5 years ago. Couldn't be more proud of myself.

I'm going to be 33yrs old in August and started smoking at 13. So in a few months it will be 20yrs since I started... I've been clean from alcohol and drugs for 4 yrs and quitting cigarettes is my next goal. Thank you for this great inspiring videos. I'm going to quit for my 33rd birthday , on August 7th, send me strength please🙏
Quit now and by August 7th you should already see a good improvement in your health. No more coughing, better lung function, better skin. The body gets quite a lot better in 2.5 months. If you stop now, you can be a radiant sparkling new version of yourself for your birthday! Think about it, wouldn't that be a really nice present to yourself?
@@TheFeldhamster Thank you and you're right. Very true. It's just that I'm having difficulty to battle the addiction thoughts of ''well it's going to be summer and it's nice to have a smoke in the sun'' or ''it's so cheap and I'm still young'' etc. I know it's the addiction thinking but I'm also afraid to fail at it once more. Thank you for the advice.
@@steep_rider3067 but it would also be nice to have a walk in the sun or a swim in summer without getting out of breath, no? Find something else that's nice in summer in the sun that will come to you when you're a non-smoker. Use that as your goal. You can do it.
Just look at these comments here, so many other people stopping. If they can, you can do it, too. If you can't go cold turkey, try to smoke less. Like, take half the cigarettes you usually smoke, put them in an extra pack for the day and only take that allotted quota with you. Stay at that level a couple of weeks, then halve again. You'll still be much closer to your goal on your birthday and it might not be as hard.
Good luck!
@@steep_rider3067I tried to quite vaping about 5 times. I was vaping on and off for like 4 years, that’s not as long as many people but I was as addicted as they come, vaping every few minutes from the moment I woke up to the moment I went to bed. My conscious brain was always flooded with nicotine. Quitting is going to be your own lil hell for awhile, as I’m sure you know. But I’m now 6 months quit and if I can do it, I fully believe you can too. You have to realize though that it’s not just an addiction, it is likely your primary (if not only) coping mechanism for anything and everything wrong in your life. It is terrifying to face life without a drug to rely on to make you feel like everything is ok anytime you want, to face life without that lil bit of control over your emotions and thoughts and feelings. But I think as long as you’re honest with yourself and you recognize that it’s terrifying and you know that your own brain is going to do everything in its power to make you believe that quitting isn’t worth it, I think as long as you realize that and have an awareness of it you can say no to it and try other coping mechanisms.
@@steep_rider3067 maybe try doing something else? like chewing gum. either way, i hope your recovery goes well...and i second the first reply. better to stop sooner. :D
This is a crazy good way to do a smoking PSA. Using the few positives and an actually positive outlook to sandwich the horrifying consequences, absolutely brilliant! No condescending talk, no "STOP NOW", just the facts. Absolute Michelin star video!

My greatest accomplishment was when I was around 8 years old, I told my grandma, who had been smoking since my dad was a kid, how dangerous it was and that I didn't want to lose her before I even graduate highschool. That got to her, and from that day forward she has never touched a cigarette. This week, she will be coming to my college graduation.
thats wholesome!
Congratulations to her, I wish for you and your grandmother good health and success!
Same happened but with my dad. I told him when I was like 5 years old, something along the lines of "if you die of cancer, who will take care of me?? 🥺" He quitted immediately and hasn't smoked for more than 30 years ❤️
Good for you for saving your grandma. Now you get to spend more time for her
Congratulations man! Here is to more years for your grandma and your family
I quit vaping 3-4 days ago after about 6 years of on and off. This is the first time in a long time where my conviction to quit is stronger than any craving I have.

I like how a video titled "Smoking is awesome" is better at smoking prevention than actual anti-smoking PSAs
this comment is gonna be very viral soon
This video is the opposite of what anti-smooking PSA are.
It tells you that smoking is amazing but in reality it is trying to brainwash you into thinking that you really should stop smoking.
@@AlexandreG Exactly; I get that from their point of view they're steelmanning the case against something they believe deleterious for society at large, but the format is your classical propaganda style that leaves important bits of information that contradict their _a priori_ 'ALL smoking bad' narrative

@@dasten123 Because it is titled "smoking is awesome". That's the irony.
"Information videos" don't work. Only shaming works, but you're not allowed to shame people, let alone kids, anymore.
I would love to see something about how smokers can affect those around them (second hand smoke) to better illustrate how smoking is not just actively harming smokers but also those around them, even in public, who didn’t volunteer to participate.
yea i agree it's super annoying when people smoke in large groups of people where they most certainly know there is a bunch of small humans nearby
thanks for respecting smokers while being informative in how smoking is dangerous
Naming the title “Smoking is Awesome” is kind of genius, since if you send this video to your smoker friend or sibling they’ll probably actually watch it
It also entices people like myself to see what is said in a video called "Smoking is Awesome", as surely it can't be promoting smoking like the title suggests.
Both anti smokers and smokers will click on the vid seeing the title
It's also not factually wrong: Smoking IS awesome - right in the moment you're smoking and getting that hit of every single chemical kicking up your dopamine levels.
It's kinda like how drinking a Cola is awesome. It's the long-term consequences that aren't.
@@SmugLilBugger it's awesome if you can do it once in a while. the effects of a cigarette here and there are negligible. issue is, most people can't do that, because one here or there turns into two, turns into three, turns into a pack a day.

Smoking and vaping harm all the people around you while you are doing it.
I don't care about an adult consuming nicotine as long as they aren't putting it and other chemicals into the air that I'm breathing. There are gums, patches, and other methods that don't harm the people around the nicotine user.
thx god we have loser stupidity logic associated with the most addictive chemical on earth. superb
@@peterwein1716
Yeah, second hand smoke is super harmful to the surrounding people and the planet.
@@peterwein1716 I'd say a billion people lighting up multiple times a day, releasing those chemicals into the environment and very often littering it with cigarette butts is still cause for concern, though.
@@peterwein1716 Cigarettes are absolutely damaging to people around you, but there's little evidence that this translates to vaping as well - vapes contain mainly isolated nicotine without any tar (many even contain pure synthetic nicotine, not extracted from tobacco), so while it is still extremely addictive, it's not nearly as damaging to the body, and the vast majority of currently used flavorings are tested and confirmed safe (the exceptions to this are CBD, THC and HHC-P vapes, which is what the scare a few years ago was about). This is still subject to active research of course, but this is what the current evidence seems to show. The delivery method itself, atomized propylene glycol and glycerol, is perfectly safe and routinely used for many inhaled medications.

The reason I like this video is because, unlike other anti-smoking videos where they terrorize smokers and make it something scary, it slowly shows you the bad aspects of smoking.

My mom walked in on me while i was watching this video and i think she thinks that i smoke😭😭💀💀
I was convinced that vaping had to be healthier than smoking because it's just the vaporized nicotine instead of smoke. That changed when I listened to a 'Science vs' episode on it. There are some seriously harmful chemicals in the vape juice that don't need to be ignited to kill cells. There are neurotrophic benefits to nicotine, but neither smoking or vaping is a healthy way to consume it.

A few week ago, about halfway through Allen Carr’s Easyway to quit smoking, I no longer felt like vaping any longer. When you realize that nicotine is only temporarily relieving the problem it causes and when you realize that the ritual can be easily replaced by something that doesn't have a negative ROI, you can be free. I quit cold turkey, because that's the only way to quit. Tapering off doesn't work because there's a 72 hour clock that restarts every time you finish a cig or vape. Stick with it, stay strong. Your body will thank you immensely.
Awesome video. Theres just one thing I was missing and that is the large amounts of non-consensual damage done to non-smokers by smokers in their environment.
Whoever designed the music for this episode deserves a raise, the subtle uptick in tempo increased my anxiety throughout and definitely gave a subconscious boost to the message.
The music is made by Epic Mountain
Yeah I was on edge for a lot of it, glad I don't smoke
It's on Spotify, absolutely amazing
Me too
Epic mountain, the team of composers for the soundtrack, have made the soundtracks to Kurzesagts videos since 2013 at least. They are the goat.
i love that you start with talking about the “positive” effects explaining why its so addictive instead of just saying its an addictive substance. for teens to take it seriously they have to feel like they are being told the whole truth and this is so much more powerful bc you see the reason you would potentially want to use it and then exactly why you really don’t want to. it feels like the difference between making a decision for yourself vs just being told not to do something. this is what schools should be showing.
I agree with your reasoning.
As a smoker since 9 yo, I 100% agree.
I only saw it as a cool social activity that focuses you and gets you immediatly accepted by most groups. That is never talked about and should be mentioned.
Smokers seem cool while smoking, cause that's when they are the coolest, afterwards it's downhill everytime 🥲
this but also for every drug, including illegal ones!
Wait wait wait, are you suggesting schools should teach children to think critically, discern fact from fiction, evaluate risks and benefits, and use their own brains to reach conclusions?! HERETIC!
As a biology teacher, when I talked about drugs and neurotransmitters, I would usually start with "If you haven't considered the upsides you're being pretty biased." Kids seemed not to expect it, and definitely changed the tone to talk about them seriously instead of "what the teacher thinks I should say while thinking something else."
I appreciate this. I've smoked on and off, a pack per week at it's worst, but am cleaning up the last few weeks. I miss swimming and I know I need my lungs to get back to it. Thank you much.
Just want to say that this video was the push that made my partner and I decide to quit smoking. We are two weeks in and it's already made a massive noticeable difference to our lives.

The Best Video About Smoking I ever seen!! Awesome idea and execution!! I'll show to my daughters!!
The best anti-smoking video I’ve seen. Slapping “you will die” on products with “gross” images doesn’t register because you can’t imagine yourself in that situation. Taking someone through the process of you like smoking because of this, but here is an in-depth explanation of what is happening in your body and why it is hard to quit. Far more inspiring and informative.
The only ones deterred by those images are those that don't smoke. My parents and sister ignore them, but I as the only non smoker is really disturbed by them. Both because they are very unappealing images, an because my entire household is at risk of going through it
It's amazing, not only for the great and well thought out content with good flow, but the title. "Smoking is Awesome" leads people who don't smoke to stop and think: "Wait, this is Kurzgesagt, why would they think smoking is awesome?!" and people who do smoke see this and click because it's such an uncommon thing to say, especially from a science channel.
what I don't get is companies selling cigarettes and pasting photos of how it'll harm you, like just don't sell them then ?
@@romart03 Very true, they have so much science on how much it destroys every part of your body, yet they still sell it, just at a higher price
@@romart03ah but that’s the paradoxical aspect. Maybe your comment is ironic, but for those who are unaware, I believe the cigarette companies are the ones who proposed printing these ‘you will die’ messages and photos on the boxes. Why? Because they sell more boxes because of it, than if they didn’t print them at all.
But how’s that possible? One word. Regulation. Or the lack of it. They want to limit regulation, by the government etc. They realize that with all the negative aspects of smoking… regulation will come for them at some point. But the worst case scenario is the government places a price floor, where the price of cigarettes goes so high no one wants to buy them any more. That’s the real nightmare… so instead they themselves propose that they will ‘tackle the problems of smoking’ themselves… by printing these useless messages and photos on their boxes. Because surely they make people want to smoke less right?
But as other commentors point out… nah. They are really ineffective. Smokers are gonna smoke. The companies realize this… but not the government. So big tobacco sell lots of cigarettes… and the government get the feel like they did something :D

I started smoking at 19 continued for well over a decade. I quit years ago, but this video just brought up all the anxiety about my health that drove me to quit in the first place. This is a great video to show young teens, I think.
Ha, I quit to spite the government and the taxes they get from smokers.
Thanks Kurzgesagt, I never smoked and condemned such bad habits but now I feel like taking a drag.
My Dad went cold turkey after he woke me when I was a child with his coughing up phlegm into the bathroom sink. I sleepily walked in and told him I didn't want him to die. He stopped immediately and I couldn't be more proud of him for doing it.
Strong willpower is amazing.
Thats amazing, i have been telling my dad to quit since i was a young kid. 20+ years later and he still doesn't want to change at all so nothing i say helps
You've got a good dad. When I was a kid I found out my mom was a smoker (she had been hiding it my whole life) and threw a pack of her cigarettes in the trash. Her response was of course not to rethink her habits because her child was concerned for her, but to yell at me about how it was her choice. So now I've told myself that if in the future she suffers serious illness as a result of her smoking, I won't be taking care of her. If it's really her choice and her choice alone like she insisted, then the consequences are hers and hers alone.
@@nox6767 I did the same to my Dad, and he promised me he would quit. It took him a while, but he did it :3
@@nox6767 I'm so sorry that's awful. I hope she quits someday and gets better.

That's until you try and realize what a mistake it was to quit. You'll never be free of ciggies so just stop worrying and smoke away, and when you are 80 and in a hospital with some "issue" aka. Stuff that's natural for that age, you'll see the anti smoking virgins in the same hospital with the same problems, and you'll smile knowing you enjoyed your life to the fullest instead of having wasted it getting mad over other people's harmless hobbies like those idiots.

SHOW THIS IN EVERY SCHOOL.
This kind of visualisation can save millions of young people from ever starting.
No, teach the actual science. It’s the filters that are causing all this damage, it alters the smoke holding onto the tar and breaking the molecules up into what’s known as “particulate matter” which is known to directly cause small cell carcinoma. A normal unfiltered cigarette has the same amount of negative health effects as drinking a cup of coffee in that it has the same amount of carcinogens as a cup of coffee, very little. The damage from the smoke in your lungs is significantly less too, because of the composition of the smoke. It’s less harmful than walking around LA when there’s smog. Filtered smokes on the other hand have 50-80x the carcinogens and directly cause cancer, while nonfilters don’t directly cause cancer.
Don’t believe me? Look it up!!! They’ve done dozens of studies proving this, most recently in Japan.
A lot of teens simply won't listen
@@LuisSierra42 WE HAVE TO TRY
not sure how it is in other countries, but here in the uk we don’t really have a smoking problem in school, and there’s actually laws to prevent us from ever starting, even when we are adults. The main issue is vaping, and we still don’t know how bad the long term effects will be.

This video alone sums up why I love this channel.
Yea the bit at the start about “smoking creates a temporary problem that it solves instantly” is so true and one of the mental things I had to understand when quitting. I thought I could not survive the rest of my life without it, as whenever I wasn’t buzzed I would feel anxious, slow, just terrible. But then I remembered that I never felt that way before I ever started nicotine, it was the nicotine that was causing my pain in the first place, it only “solves” the problem it creates, then creates it again. It’s just a cycle that you have to eventually break out of, otherwise you will spend your entire life temporarily solving a recurring issue

this is actually genius. It captures smokers attention by complimenting the thing they do and you did a GREAT job at making it scary enough to potentially ruin smokers addiction.
He's not complimenting the thing we do, he's just stating facts, if you're not a smoker you will never get it. It helps, A LOT, with EVERYTHING, in EVERY situation. That's the deadliest part about it. Also, you quiting after watching a YT video is unlikely but it sure got me standing. I'll consider smoking less and maybe one day quit.
