Hei Niko! Great video, like always! I can’t wait to see the next episodes.
I thought I would make a short comment to clarify somethings for the viewers commenting on snow safety, etc. Whenever we are talking about “rime” we are a talking about buried surface Hoar. In Norwegian surface hoar is called “overflate rim” though we are speaking English in most everything that is filmed, we do speak a lot Norwegian behind the scenes and sometimes saying rime is just a bad Norenglish translation.
What I really appreciate about your film making Nikolai is how transparent you are in what happens in the mountains. In this case you could have easily cut all the discussion about the snowpack instability and just showed the skiing. This isn’t intended to be an instructional video on how to safely ski steep couloirs or how to avoid being in avalanches, but a documentation of what happens as you try to ski all the cool lines etc.
We did make some risky decisions on this day, but skiing in avalanche terrain always involves risky decision making. This video does not come close to showing all the information we had for making those decisions. This is not a how to video, this is entertainment.
    Seek qualified instruction.
P.s. In my opinion the way Eivind and Nikolai skied the couloir just as hazardous if not more so than the avalanche hazard on this day, but damn, are they not good skiers! 😍

Unreal that y'all pointed out your concern of poor bonding between new and old snow, continued up the 50+ degree loaded cooler, had several woomphs and enormous shooting cracks. Lots of us have ignored red flags and have gotten away with things in the mtns. I'm not judging for pushing it but, it is no doubt bad form to be glorrifying this type of behavior because relying on luck isnt sustainable in avy terrain

Lovin this edit Niko. Relationships are so important in good decision making and although I know you take risks, they always seem like calculated risks and the rewards look huge. Finn's comments on this is also responsible and informative. I don't have the skills to ski those lines or if I did I would just pick my way down slowly which is probably way more risky. Speed is your friend. I learn such a lot from your videos and the whole eco and poverty angles show you can live a fun life in and ethical. I look forward to the next one.

Hats off to you for getting such a rad line. Point of contention, rime and buried surface hoar are different crystals formed by different meteorological processes and in my experience have very different stability outcomes for snowpacks. I can't recall rime ice being a persistent weak layer and the shooting cracks are certainly more akin to a snowpack suffering from a persistent weak layer. Semantics aside, you obviously managed the snowpack correctly for the specific avalanche problem.

Niko, been watching you for some time now and love every video you’ve ever produced. I recently got into touring and took an AIARE course here in the states last year. You ski some gnar and encounter a lot of different conditions/terrain. It would be awesome if every so often you took the footage of a day out where you encountered dangerous avy terrain and explained to viewers what you saw, why it was concerning (or not so), and explained your next move in depth. The banter is always playful but you are an experienced outdoorsman. We could learn a lot from your thought process and it could keep us safe when we go out on our own. Keep up the stoke!

Incredible video! I wonder what made you guys „feel okay“ and carry on despite the avalanche warning signs?

Finn suspected that it was just an isolated area where the surface hoar hadn't been swept away by the wind, so that the snow above and below us wasn't unstable, just that little pocket. He was right, but of course we could've had worse luck than we did.

Seems to me that Finn brings a great level of avi awareness and judgement to your team. You should invite him back!

@@Nikolai_Schirmer Okay, I see. Well take care out there, that steep couloir looked quite serious on video :)
