Another homerun guitar arrangement by Filipino classical guitar virtuoso Monching Carpio. Took me a few days to learn all parts and I really enjoyed playing it. I must admit I’m not familiar with any of Joey Ayala’s songs, but after learning this, I feel I should check out some of his repertoire. 🙂
“Walang Hanggang Paalam (Never Ending Farewell),” written by Joey Ayala in 1983 (released in 1991), is on its face a love song between two people who are physically distant, but whose “hearts draw closer.” In a 2017 performance with Dong Abay, Ayala even calls it an “all-purpose senti(mental) song.” But this is what makes it a perfect example of a kundiman. “Walang Hanggang Paalam” is ostensibly a love song for a person, but with its themes of freedom and undying hope, it can easily be read as a love song for one’s country-hallmarks of a kundiman.
About the composer: Born José Íñigo Homer Lacambra Ayala; 1 June 1956 - he is better known as Joey Ayala. His music exploits the intricacies of Philippine indigenous musical instruments such as hegalong, kubing and the 8-piece kulintang in fusion with modern pop music. His creations resulted to an ultra-rich sound that pleases even the most trained ear. His wisdom in creating lyrics and music was noted by music scholars and followers of the experimental music genre, long before the terms Indie music or Alternative music were coined. He has released 14 albums, his first was recorded in a makeshift-studio in 1982 in Matina, Davao City.
