  • Scout leaders today saluted the statue of Robert Baden-Powell as they formed a human shield to stop it from being removed over his ‘Nazi sympathies’.
    Robert Baden-Powell was honoured with the memorial in Poole, Dorset, 12 years ago - with critics now calling for it to be pulled down over concerns he was racist, homophobic and a supporter of Adolf Hitler.
    But former Scouts and locals have today staged their own protest this morning after the statue appeared on a Black Lives Matter hit-list.
    Activists have drawn up the "Topple the Racists" list of monuments they want removed from around the UK after demonstrations were sparked over the death of George Floyd in the US.
    Protests in Bristol already saw the toppling of a statue of slave trader Edward Colston, with the memorial to Winston Churchill controversially daubed with the word "racist".
    And Scouts, dressed in their full uniforms, today saluted in front of the figure of Sir Baden-Powell in Dorset as supporters formed a human shield around the statue.

    As a Belgian scout, the idea of the removal of his statue deeply shocks me. I have been to Engeland as a scout and the people were really hospitable and I was really proud to be a scout! Scouts are united all arround the world and it has nothing to do with facism or racism, we should be thankfull toward mr. Baden-Powell and especially not removing him.

I thank sir Baden Powell for starting a movement that gives Lads skill and gets them out on the Moors earning merrit badges along the way ! Same. Everyone's apologising, most media content is being removed from platforms, and from my very limited use of social media, it seems to have turned to a complete shitshow. Everyone is trying to catch everyone else out by pruning through someone's history or recording everything... and people are sharing videos constantly of police making arrests where force is used, with no willing to understand the context of what happened before the altercation, or after for that matter and praising officers being beaten in the name of peace?. When a few videos of isolated incidents where police officers were out-of-line gets shared across the country and viewed by millions, then those small amount of videos will create a disproportionate amount of distrust between public and state and make an enemy of 123,000+ potentially good, law-abiding, protocol following officers. Social media has to much bearing on people's sense of judgement. Mob mentality has entered our daily lives which is only going to get worse. God knows what part of history will be deleted next or what liberty restricting law & acts will be imposed.
      Just an FYI, Baden-Powell was a horrible person, but we can't erase the past to make us not remember about how we developed as a society otherwise we're doomed to repeat. Knowledge and education is the key, not dis-order and division. Rant over lol

    • @kapitankapital6580
      @kapitankapital6580 Před 4 lety

      The problem is that in order to save money, councils have for decades now adopted a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" approach to roads. Whereas in many other countries road maintenance is regular and frequent, in the UK we only fix them once every ten years or so. The result of this however is that it costs more in the long run, since you actually have to lay out a whole new road instead of just fixing the existing one, and it makes the quality of the roads worse and the road works more obstructive. However because councillors can kick the can down the road and hopefully unload the cost on the next council, they adopt a worse approach to road maintenance.

      That's my point. Like some people, for instance the slaver in Bristol, dont have any place having statues in modern society, but others like Baden Powell who created an organisation that is synonymous with British culture and has done a lot of good in the decades it has been in existence deserve to be commemorated for the good they done. Others such as Nelson and Sir Francis Drake who were involved in creating and maintaining the British empire STILL deserve to be commemorated due to the huge impact they had on the history and development of this country. As bad as the empire was by modern standards, it is still a major factor in this countries history and where we stand as a world power today. Even though I am the son of an immigrant I feel it is unfair we as minorities demand to erase significant parts of this countries history
