  • The Morning Nomad Podcast is here again with some hot coffee and answers to your questions! After a few weird months dealing with the trailer build, getting back out west, and much more, I sat down for a good ol' fashion van life Q&A.
    Exciting things to come!

I can so relate to the build story. Just finishing up my own van. And the actual work was amazing. What a ride! But the figuring out, the not knowing if you do it right is hard. Specially because of my low budget and the materials I could get my hands on here in Turkey where sometimes hard to work with. But a very rewarding project for sure.

I love your honesty and you have such wisdom at a young age. Keep doing what you are doing! I know people tell you this all the time, but I wish I had gone for more at a young age.... trying to make up for it now at 63. Just am finishing my van also and took a 3week vacation and loved it. Took Atlas my dog and he too loves the outdoors. Will be doing more of that life to come. Hugs to you all. Would love to learn more about Chris just because I think it's neat that you two are on the same wavelength. Cheers 🍷

You know what I think is awesome- is that you are so aware of what recharges you and what makes you feel the most mentally and physically healthy. A lot of people (including myself) get caught up in the routine expectations of life and it takes years to cultivate that self-awareness. That is amazing!! Love the vlogs and the podcast- so encouraging to someone several years older than you to pursue what keeps me grounded. Keep at it girl!

Re: Chris ... What makes me REALLY curious about people living your lifestyle and relationship is how both of your 'houses' aren't really just a house/van. They are part of you. And how do you travel together with 2 rigs. Where do you sleep? Do you use your kitchen to cook in because it's more familiar? Do you hang on Chris' couch because he has one in the bus? Do you ever do trips with just Togo because it's smaller/easier? Does Chris miss his bus then? etc... I just think it's so, so interesting how 2 nomads come together and the balance of each of your independent lifestyle/builds but wanting to be together but wanting to love being in your space but wanting to share your space (and we go round and round - ha).

Linnea, I'm retired in my mid-sixties and I just started my own van build a couple of weeks ago. Of all the videos on youtube I enjoy and follow your van build for very helpful and practical suggestions. I'm currently building the subfloor after following your previous steps with sound deadening and using rustoleum to the insides. I'm definitely going to be checking out your video on the electrical side because I know nothing about that.LOL You keep things simple and clear about how you go about doing things. .You are appreciated! Thank you!!

The way you talked about Akela running free and happy through the fields almost brought me to tears ^^ I think I can relate when I see my two cats running in the garden (and my neighbors gardens woops), playing, chasing grasshoppers and butterflies, or just chilling in the sun. My heart bursts :-)
Also somehow a relief to hear you talk about the exhaustion after the van build. A lot of things are shifting in my life and my tiredness is confusing. So nice to hear other people have it too.

Love these personal sit downs on what you've been up to :) At 30:00 I think you are talking about Superadobe or Earthbag building materials. VERY cool and you can create curved walls, domes, vaulted doorways, etc.. Have you heard of Earthships? Another brilliant building technique that uses discarded auto tires rammed with earth as the building bricks. Spectacular colored glass bottle walls, water catchment and re-use of water systems. You could purchase land, build a small eco house and rent it as Air BnB if you go off van tripping??

Love Morning Nomad! Each time you delve into deep stuff and topical stuff. All good. Motivation is a good topic and I like what you concluded: Be the motivation, rather than seek it. Baby steps are necessary when the ruts are deep. Mostly, I appreciate how you express what we all go through and the perspectives we share, even though me may not be aware of them. Thanks for doing these! Oh ... and we can't help but be curious about Chris (sp?). We love you and all you find important.

Linnea, Layers - layers - layers this winter!!! Just found the 2022 - 2023 winter forecast from the Farmers Almanac. They are predicting “Unreasonably Cold and Snowy” in the Wisconsin area and “Hibernation Zone - Glacial Snow Covered” in nearby Minnesota, with January temperatures in both areas at -40 below… Get more wood and extra layers plus a snow vest for Akela. I know you will have a great adventure - just prepare for the worst. Be safe.

I want to plant a seed for the future Linnea about future building because it seems you were describing your experience with the couple who built their own adobe bricks, I think you were enjoying the natural building process, the feeling when you are in such a dwelling touches your core! there are many approaches like what you described as well as straw clay method (my personal favorite and you can find out more from a Wisconsin (!) architect who does workshops with it, from Madison, Lou Host Jablonski AIA), there is also straw bale building…

Sweet ! Well I guess it’s also a pretty long term thing, let’s first pass the winter with your ambitious off-grid plans 😜
By the way I just dwelled again in your recent videos and I’m so inspired by how you combine your nomad lifestyle and off-grid/self-sufficient living ! It’s personnally kinda my all time dilemma of exploring very rooted self-sufficiency (I stayed and helped at a off-grid homestead with a couple who build their self-sufficiency over 40 years and learned so much from that) and now working towards building a homestead myself, growing my own food, slowly building a vision of self-sufficiency, all the while craving the exploration and novelty of the life on the road (I used to live in my cargo van and now have a truck camper) which I haven’t done in a while because I’m focused on the development of the property and making money also… anyways long story to say that I admire you lol and I wish I could surround myself with more dope people like you 👌

To be honest some depression from the break up probably spilled into your build. I was able to build my houseboat in 2 weeks and lived in it for 5 years at 2700.00 total cost. So if you're thinking about building just get started asap and figure it out on the way. All true experience is colored by the difference in good times and bad times. It's not interesting just to always have the good. I've traveled a lot of the same places, AZ WI and found the travel is the most important part. Not the vehicle or the tent. Dogs and cats are the best travel partners. You're taking advantage of time, most folks miss that part of life. Time only goes away, it doesn't wait for you. Keep it up kiddo.
