Don't ever feel ashamed to cry tears for anything in this life that moves you ... That it what makes you human.. Remembrance and tears are always the two Parents we all live with.
The song Ed Sheeran dreams, wishes, cries wishing he wrote it or could match it...Ed Sheeran is amazing, one in a million, but he can never touch this in a zillion lifetimes.
You've totally nailed it, Bill. 🙏 It's a funny old world... Whilst scrolling through some CZcams tunes yesterday, a song by Mr Sheeran popped up. It's had been viewed 4.2 BILLION times!! 😱 I truly believe that David is in a league of his own, but in terms of popular music such as Ed - he was probably born 20 years too early.
Wow. Just wow.David Gray is my all-time favourite artist, and I have to say that 'Shine' is probably my favourite track of his. What a talent this man has.
Just stumbled across this song, I've always liked David, but never bought any of his music, but my gosh, this is just an incredibly moving song, I echo the comments left on here, David, you are a true musical genius, no. Your a musical poet sir, currently I am suffering with mental health issues, and to listen to you sing such a beautiful song just fills my heart with joy, thank you sir. XX
i could just sit here and cry , listening to this song i miss him so much ..........but who know's what's waiting in the wing's of time!!!!........we gonna go were we can shine
In 2004 my daughter was getting her Journalism degree from Amarillo Jr College and she went to a David Gray concert and got to interview him for the school newspaper. She played a bit of his music for me that she had recorded. That night we both became fans and was a bonding moment for her and I. Love David Grays music. Love you Jessica.
David went out with me for a month -or- so. 39 years ago I was 16 and he was 17. I have only just realised who he is now. He did not talk much. He seemed "different". I made him smile. The way he looked at me will never leave me. I was sad when I realised he was not coming to see me any more. I am watching this video to try to bring it all together. The Dave I knew in 1985, the White Ladder David Gray, and the legend he has become. I have tried to reach out to people I knew in 1985 with no success. He did not talk much. I did not have much of a voice either, when I was 16. 1985- I was sad when I realised he was not coming to see me any more. 2024- I am heartbroken.
I have found someone from 1985, we chatted a lot, he remembers me quite fondly, but doesn't recall Dave. It's good to know it's possible David Gray has 16year old me in his memories, somewhere.
I heard this on the radio for the first time today and thought it was a new song. I was actually shocked to learn it's nearly 30 years old. I love it. Thanks to Philly's wxpn for giving this gem to me!
This song represents a moment in time that rests deep in my heart and soul. I can listen to it and it takes me there. Lots of emotions. In memory of my sunshineface.
I fell in love with this song when it was introduced to me by a woman I loved very much. When that ended, I couldn't even listen to this song. Eventually, I was able to recover...and now I love the song more than ever.
Songs like this change people's lives. The fact he was as young as he was when he wrote it just lends more weight to his brilliance. He'll be remembered in history as a great.
I can see it in your eyes What I know in my heart is true That our love it has faded Like the summer run through So we'll walk down the shoreline One last time together Feel the wind blow our wanderin' hearts Like a feather But who knows what's waiting In the wings of time Dry your eyes We gotta go where we can shine Don't be hiding in sorrow Or clinging to the past With your beauty so precious And the season so fast No matter how cold the horizon appear Or how far the first night When I held you near You gotta rise from these ashes Like a bird of flame Step out of the shadow We've gotta go where we can shine For all that we struggle For all we pretend It don't come down to nothing Except love in the end And ours is a road That is strewn with goodbyes But as it unfolds As it all unwinds Remember your soul is the one thing You just can't compromise Take my hand We're gonna go where we can shine We're gonna go where we can shine We're gonna go where we can shine (and look, and look) Through the windows of midnight Moonfoam and silver
i grew up listening to my dads "music", hated it till i was old enough to appreciate it, i feel this is the same with Davids music and the generation below me. man i feel old saying that.
How lucky am I to have only heard this beauty for the first time this month? It's like buried treasure. I dedicate this ode to the one. My only special one.
Listening over 20 years after I first heard this song on tape from A Century Ends and knew David to be a genius. What I've learnt from goodbyes is definitely that our souls are the one things we can't compromise. That we meet people for a reason which in my experience is for our soul's to learn and grow and sometimes that's best done apart. Wishing us all great and lasting love 💖🙏
I'm just glad in a way he has never really made it in America, he has stuck to his guns with his albums and hasn't changed his sound to suit an American market. Truly an asset this country should be proud of!
Some songs can encompass everything that needs to be said. This song has helped me get though many loss of close friends and family through the years and given me strength to keep on. God bless you David.
He has the amazing, and extremely rare, ability of feeling the music rather than writing it... As I listen to his songs I can almost see how they formed in his head before he ever put pen to paper... Such a powerful, sensitive and caring character. Good on ya David lad.
He was reading Yeates when he wrote these lyrics said they filtered into the song. Two people who need to be apart so they can shine. Gives me shivers.
any song that one can relate to....such as this...holds a level above most music. David Gray has quite a few of these amazing songs...honest and emotional.
I just went to his concert on March 5th and let me tell you that he sounds better live than on his album what an amazing concert could be the best one ever. If ever the oportunity comes up go see him he is mezmorizing. " remember your souls the one thing you can't compromise!"
and for all that we struggle for all we pretend you know you know it don't come down to nothing except love in the end....this is so true, but pl strive for wrong things these days, unaware that non of those things they will be able to take with them where ever it is after this life we'll go,but love ,love remains
Brilliant! This musician is truly talented and he deserves more attention. The only reason he doesn't release albums very often is because he has a life and family beyond music. I love his music, his voice and beutiful lyrics. He didn't change in quality, He can't and never will lose his talent to write beautiful songs like these.
Fengis trust you kept on playing SMILES Welcome to my first funeral song, amongst a few others... David is beyond brilliance How profound knowing OUR LOVE is ETERNAL~

This song played at my cousins wake. This is the first time I’ve been able to listen to this in almost 20 years. Not easy to do either.
God bless bro
Beautiful song. I dig your username. I love that he uses his more natural Welsh accent on these early songs.
Good on you for feeling the fear and doing it anyway.
"Remember your soul is the one thing
You can't compromise
Take my hand
We're gonna go where we can shine"

One of our best living song writers.
I can see it in your eyes
What I know in my heart is true
That our love it has faded
Like the summer run through
So we'll walk down the shoreline
One last time together
Feel the wind blow our wanderin' hearts Like a feather
But who knows what's waiting
In the wings of time
Dry your eyes
We gotta go where we can shine
Don't be hiding in sorrow
Or clinging to the past
With your beauty so precious
And the season so fast
No matter how cold the horizon appear
Or how far the first night
When I held you near
You gotta rise from these ashes
Like a bird of flame
Step out of the shadow
We've gotta go where we can shine
For all that we struggle
For all we pretend
It don't come down to nothing
Except love in the end
And ours is a road
That is strewn with goodbyes
But as it unfolds
As it all unwinds
Remember your soul is the one thing
You just can't compromise
Take my hand
We're gonna go where we can shine
We're gonna go where we can shine
We're gonna go where we can shine
(and look, and look)
Through the windows of midnight
Moonfoam and silver
rasp berry Almost...good try though.
Thank you for putting the lyrics. Thank you to David Gray

It is my personal opinion that David Gray is the greatest lyricist ever and Shine is a breath taking example of his talent. I especially love the the ending.
If "hey we're gonna be alright" was a song it would be this 💙
“Although our love is waning, let us stand by the lone border of the lake once more,” - Yeats, “That our love it has faded, like the summer run through, so we'll walk down the shoreline, one last time together” - Gray
Shine and coming down are my all time favourite songs ever fact ❤

Best song of ALL TIME.
Oh my, he's playing a Harmony Sovereign! My first guitar! How cool! Great song too

one of the greatest songs out there in the universe. Indescribably wonderful
I always remember around 1999-2001 period listening to White Ladder on repeat over and over. That album is incredible. This is his best song though i think. Come to Toronto soon please David

Nobody can write songs like David Gray
going to his concert in indianapolis, indiana on july 6th 2011!!! i can't wait to see him!!!
One of my favorite songs.I think this is the inspiration-my favorite poem:
Ephemera by W.B. Yeats
Your eyes that once were never weary of mine
Are bowed in sorrow under pendulous lids,
Because our love is waning.'
And then She:
'Although our love is waning, let us stand
By the lone border of the lake once more,
Together in that hour of gentleness
When the poor tired child, passion, falls asleep.
How far away the stars seem, and how far
Is our first kiss, and ah, how old my heart!'
Pensive they paced along the faded leaves,
While slowly he whose hand held hers replied:
'Passion has often worn our wandering hearts.'
The woods were round them, and the yellow leaves
Fell like faint meteors in the gloom, and once
A rabbit old and lame limped down the path;
Autumn was over him: and now they stood
On the lone border of the lake once more:
Turning, he saw that she had thrust dead leaves
Gathered in silence, dewy as her eyes,
In bosom and hair.
'Ah, do not mourn,' he said,
'That we are tired, for other loves await us;
Hate on and love through unrepining hours.
Before us lies eternity; our souls
Are love, and a continual farewell.'
I can see it in your eyes
What I know in my heart is true
That our love it has faded
Like the summer run through
And we'll walk down the shoreline
One last time together
Feel the wind blow our wanderin' hearts
Like a feather
But who nows what's waiting
In the wings of time
Dry your eyes
We gotta go where we can shine
Don't be hiding in sorrow
Or clinging to the past
With your beauty so precious
And the season so fast
No matter how cold the horizon appear
Or how far the first night
When I held you near
You gotta rise from these ashes
Like a bird of flame
Take my hand
We've gotta go where we can shine
For all that we struggle
For all we pretend
It don't come down to nothing
Except love in the end
And ours is a road
That is strewn with goodbyes
But as it unfolds
As is all unwinds
Remember your soul is the one thing
You just can't compromise
Step out of the shadow
We're gonna go where we can shine
We're gonna go where we can shine
We're gonna go where we can shine
(and look, and look)
Through the windows of midnight
Moonfoam and silver
baby we shine now .. still smiling at you
Absolutely love this song.
I cannot do anything but love this man and his journey!
