- Intellectually gifted people make up 10% of the population, regardless of race, culture, location or socio-economic status, but due to outdated myths and misconceptions, and culturally pervasive stereotypes, only a fraction are properly identified. This can lead to a lack of challenge, boredom and frustration with school, poor performance and negative outcomes for the individual. This talk will challenge your idea of gifted students and may help you to see the class clown or unpolished diamond in a different light. Jordan is a secondary school biology and psychology teacher with a background in behavioural neuroscience. Recognising the lack of identification and support for gifted students, Jordan is now studying methods to teach and support intellectually gifted students to reach their potential and gain fulfilment in their education. Jordan spends much of his time volunteering with youth development and is Mensa Australia’s gifted children coordinator for South Australia. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Thank you. I am an 48 year old finally learning why I am not a "succes" and performing at the level of my peers. (Found out I am gifted in 2020). When you talked about 'Poor Polly' you were talking about me 😢.
I have _not_ had a decent class since year six. Which was when I was in my school's OC class. Now I'm in high school, half the classes are so ridiculously boring, and none of the teachers care. Science is the worst for this. In year 7 maths, I was ignored by my teacher entirely after she gave me a year 10 maths textbook and just said "learn this".
Gifted underachivers... woo.
Anyway I'm using this video as the speech we have to analyse for english or whatever, perhaps my teacher will get the hint.
Lol. Most teachers spend so much time around kids they become quite childish themselves.
My supervised Mensa IQ score was in the 'High Average' range, and I was placed in remedial sets at school.
Jee, as a Mensan, I thought you had to be in the top 2%. I always knew I was more intelligent than most of my peers, but it wasn’t until I (by pure chance) decided to take the Mensa IQ test (at 50) that I found out just how different I was. Looking back on it, I didn’t see the bigger picture then but I sure do now! I guess my “eccentric” hobbies and vast interests as a child weren’t so weird at all. Instead of abusing me, it would have been nice if the adults in my life had actually encouraged me and given me guidance. Unfortunately, it seems the education system has only gotten WORSE since then and today’s children are being failed even WORSE than they failed my generation.
a B is not failing lol... but i do remember when i merely thot i might get a B , i had a complete breakdown crying.... i felt like a total failure.... i had no sense of worth other than the outcomes i got in life.... especially grades
We had a sick sam in class. Poor misunderstood guy
Gifted kids are twice exceptional. Thats to be expected.
Wow to Unisa's lineup. Harry and Laurence were great
Love it!
I loved this one too Laurence! Jordan is a great speaker
My child was a mix of the both of the boys and gifted, so I knew right away that they were😂
I was the class clown or maybe unpolished diamond hehe
I think in alot of ways im an under achiever, but in other ways im sort of an over achieviever, so i think total im neutral i guess.
🙏🥰
Hello what is Mensa?? Is that a group?
It's a society for high-IQ people.
"Who's the dumbest person in Mensa?"
Underachievers in what standars?? Success is having 3 rented houses and sail a boat for the rest of your life and leave the dog race !! or just simple go fishing and be happy! lmao
Top 10% = gifted? This is why all kids these days get participation awards instead of 1st 2nd and 3rd place medals. Gifted is more like the top 0.1%.
2% is probably more accurate
No, it's about top 2%. 96% percentile and up. Please study up before you start spouting off about imaginary things like participation trophies.
Really, go try to web search up an image of one. You won't find one. And even if you did, ask yourself.. who was handing them out?
Uh-oh. Don't let that explode your brain. Lol.
@@legalfictionnaturalfact3969 do you really think that around 1 in 25 people in life is gifted/extraordiary. Please think before you blindly accept a statistic. Do you understand the word: extra + ordinary. 1 in 25 is very ordinary.
@@dalelane1948 uh, sweetheart, calm down. get your snuggy and take a breath. lol. this is exactly what the gifted program states as it's cutoff. 96th percentile. i was in it. i was told by the people who do the testing. if you have questions about that, go ask them.
yes gifts for all, everybody is clever nowadays.@@legalfictionnaturalfact3969
