- In this video, we will go back to the basics. This video is all about Highlights, Shading, & Shadows. I will be using Crayola colored pencils to show you that you don't need expensive pencils to create beautiful coloring pages. I'll share with you how I add lots of extra depth and dimension so that the objects on my coloring pages really "POP" and stand out. I'll share why I choose the colors I do, and even bring out the color wheel so that you have a better understanding of color choices. This video is part of my Adult Coloring for Beginners Series.

I love the combos you make! I have many sets of colored pencils but the child in me still loves my Crayolas.
Pamela I have the 100 set. They are beautiful but, they cause my hands to ache. My joints hurt for days afterwards. I love watching you create such masterpieces with them. The arthritis just won't let me use them. I'm limited on this. The prismacolor is OK because they lay down so easy. Have fun.
Thank you for this video. It was just the right length of time giving us simple guidelines. Helping colorist feel as if they can create a lovely page without feeling overwhelmed which makes one hesitate to try and takes the fun out of coloring.

With so much green just a touch of red on dots and perhaps antennae would give more pop. Orange and blue yellow and violet all do the same. Works like Van Gough's Sunflowers. That is real contrasting colours.

I love my Crayolas too. I've used Crayola colored pencils since I was a child, and I still love them now. I agree with you about the colors included in this set. Some of them are so different from anything else that I've used. Wow! I have a Jarlink sharpener too. It seems to work really well with any of my colored pencils. And woof, I have been playing with my crayolas pretty much exclusively for a couple of weeks. Love 'em, but I would not use them at all without an electric sharpener. My LORD the wood could be used to chop down other trees to make more pencils!

Thanks for this video. I purchased two boxes of Crayola Pencils, one for my daughter and one for me. The colors you chose for the butterfly are so beautiful together! The butterfly is stunning...I was surprised how just by placing the colors where you did, and blending them together, made such a gorgeous butterfly. My grandson is 4 almost 5 and he loves to color when I do. I can't wait to show him this butterfly colored with his colored pencils. We will do a butterfly together.

In my 120 set the colors look very different, the lemon glacier is more like a green - yellow but in the 100 set the lemon glacier it is more like a dark yellow. I still used all the colors you did and it came out good. Thank you for this video, I love using my Crayola color pencils

Great video I often find I like to use crayola pencils and find that they are very good with practice.And I love tgathey keep a sharp point without continuous sharping.I have the new colors but a family member gave me some very old crayola and there is some very differ colors .I think its great that you did this video so that other people can see what can be done with just crayola.

Much as I'd like, I can't colour for hours without getting hand ache so it's a fun diversion from practising colouring to watch a professional in action, getting those beautiful blends just so. Ooh and those sharp tips; Need a better sharpener I think? When I try sharpening that pointy, they seem to break. Like the speeded up bits because they really do show the magical process .
I am enjoying this one. I think with my love of the several more expensive sets of pencils, I forget about the actually decent quality the Crayola have!. Ive been playing around with my 100 set with a butterfly practice sheet as ive been watching this. Great Great video!!
I am so glad you enjoyed this video. It's so easy to forget about the Crayolas with all these other budget sets out there nowadays. These are definitely a classic now and I love that we have 120 colors. There are some fabulous colors in the 120 set.

Thanks for this tutorial with the Crayolas, which is some of what I first started with. Another really good affordable set is Cra-Z-Art colored pencils. They were actually a little cheaper than Crayola when I got them at Walmart. I believe the brand used to be called Rose Art, which was a horrible product in my opinion from childhood lol. I'm not sure about their other products, but their colored pencils are great for a cheaper set. The colors are nice, and it has a really nice red.
Sometimes lines left behind can be good. I have learned recently that if you add some blades of grass here and there in a lawn background it can add some realism and texture. I am starting to challenge myself to see if I can add texture, patterns, or things like clouds or stars. I also realized that backgrounds do not have to be daylight, it could be night or sunset and it changes the look of the page. I really enjoy coloring the quirky Crayola Art on the Edge books.
I have been holding off on buying an electric pencil sharpener. Yet, the one thing that has keeping me from coloring more is not being able to properly sharpen my pencil crayons. They keep breaking when I almost have them sharpened. My poor greens are getting pretty small. I am not sure if it was my sharpeners or the pencils.

Love your video, great especially for we beginners. Love how you choose your colors and how you blend them. Final result is amazing. How did you find this big set of Crayola pencils at such a good price? I've been checking Amazon and Walmart nearly everyday but never see them below $23.00. I am a senior on a fixed retirement income and always looking for a good deal. Guess I missed this one. Darn it!

@@PamelasPassionforPencils I'm waiting with anticipation for them to be delivered!!!! I also just bought a 120 set of Artisto pencils crayons by Deserres for $44.99. Haven't fiddled with them yet but did look at them and I'm over whelemed by so many colors. Only disappointing thing is there is no name of colors on the pencils.
Not sure if your familiar with that brand or not and if you are I wonder what your thoughts are and is there a specific sharpener I need for triangular shaped pencil crayons or will any sharpener work on triangular shaped pencils?
I still use my crayolas and I have about 25 sets of colored pencils. There are colors you can't find in any other set. I'm interested in a color chart for them in family color order. Thanks for the tutorial.
Pamela - the other day you ask if viewers were interested in more Crayola Colored Pencil videos. Could you do one that includes using the Crayola Colored Pencil Sticks ( the octagon “naked “ sticks- not the soft ones in the plastic tubes that are twisted to produce more of the tip) and a video using Crayola Watercolor Pencils ? Hope you don’t mind my request.

The apt complex I live in has about 15 people that we give Christmas gifts to each year. This last Christmas, I gave a box of 50 Crayola plus 15 printed free coloring pages inserted into a sliding bar cover for each of them. I don't know if they liked the gift or not, but I figured they could always regift it to their children or grandchildren.
I have been using almost exclusively the Crayolas (50 count) in my personal coloring. Your two Crayola butterflies are both awesome. I think I will color one of my Maria Trolle books with just the Crayolas from now on. It is good to see they work well in her books. I recently purchased the 120 count when they were down to $15.
What a wonderful gift to give! The Crayolas work beautifully in the Maria Trolle books. My other favorites in her books are the Arteza Expert Pencils. I hope you love your new 120 set. Happy Coloring!
You may also find Jenna Turin’s tutorials helpful. She uses the 50 set . You can also dip the tip of the pencil into odorless mineral spirits for an easier lay down without using a lot of pressure. I pour a small amount of the mineral spirits into a leftover soda cap for this purpose. It’s videos like this that show it’s the artist and not the supplies.

I love this tutorial!! I can't believe you did this with Crayolas. I have the 100 set of Crayolas so don't have all the colors... but this is motivating me to bust them out and try some combos. Would you recommend buying the 120 set even if you already have the 100? Thank you for all the wonderful videos!
I never had the 100 set and started with the 120 set aside from whatever my children had from our years of homeschooling when they were young. I couldn't believe the amount of unique colors that were in this 120 set. I am not sure of the difference of colors or the ones that have been added from the 100 to the 120 set. Maybe checking the Amazon reviews someone may have responded and listed the added 20 colors.

Please stop saying there is something wrong with the Jarlink. I use mine set to '1' and occaisionally I use '2'. '3' isn't sharp enough for me. It auto-stops on all settings.
I never said there is anything at all wrong with the Jarlink. If you’ve been watching my videos, you will see that I always recommend this sharpener. I absolutely love it. I’m glad you found the setting that works best for you.
How do you choose what colors coordination that's a struggle for me
You can use your swatch chart (if you have one). Then choose some colors and test them on a piece of paper. It's a great way to see if the colors will go together before you put them onto your coloring page.

They are most likely around $22 right now. They jump from $22-25. It’s still a fantastic deal for 120 colors.

My Crayola pencils don't have Screamin' Green. Because I'm slightly obsessive, I just bought a whole new set.
I could have bought 20 of 1 color on eBay, but I decided against that. I won't go through 20 Screamin' Green pencils before I die. 😅
