      This. This.
I've seen people attach their entire existence to characters, and it's *not* healthy.
I worried that could have been a transphobic opinion to have for some time, but in hindsight, it's more akin to disliking Impersonation or Identity Theft.
I was very much shocked when I first found out there was a Content Creator *named* Jane Romero after the character-- and frankly with how many bad experiences I've had with people who do that I've been genuinely uncomfortable with it.
I believe that JaneRomeroShow made a couple statements about how she identified more with Adriana than Jane, but struggled to switch her branding.
That's likely what sparked this situation, as she saw *herself* as Adriana, and when people make statements about disliking the character she became incredibly hostile and had no hesitation to sick her community on them.
I hope that she does take some time off and come back with a better mindset, but more importantly I hope she returns with a sense of self, rather than living through the identity of a fictional character.
That would obviously come with a rebrand, not to Adriana or Jane, but to an identity of her own.
Everyone deserves to *be* someone, someone that is unique to them, and not a character created by another person.

I've seen Jane for the first time a few months ago when twitter continued to show me her stuff. Back then she identified as Skull Merchant and all. I saw her lash out on another player live on stream during a match because people continued to DC against her. What was even worse what that the Ada she told to "git gud" and was incredibly rude to live on stream was the one survivor who continued playing until the very end and never gave up... as a result they got Jane's hate. Then she posted a screenshot of the endgame screen on twitter to complain about people DC'ing against her, the postgame chat was purposefully hidden in this. That already made me familiar with her manipulation and gaslighting.
What I find incredible unfortunate is that she acts pretty much exactly like the negative stereotype transphobes/conservatives have of trans people, especially trans women. The way she lashes out, is extremely sensitive and will label everything as transphobia just aids in perpetuating this very stereotype. Her behavior alienates LGTBQ+ people and allies while also attracting and helping transphobes. That's a shame and the last thing I wish for the community of a game that I love playing. I hope that she takes a looong look into herself and can come back a better person. If not I hope she doesn't return.

Is there even an actual 'trans community'? I feel like if there was a central trans community that could disavow said individuals, call them out and put them in their place and stop giving them a green light to 'represent' the whole community they'd lose a lot of pull. There is a trans minority like Jane, who are 'twitter activists' that just go around being toxic and then claiming transphobia and shit like that on the slightest show of distaste from the people or communities they try to dig for drama. It's quite annoying as I have trans friends and they are absolutely nothing like those people but most outsiders don't realize that. Because all they see are people like Jane. People who think everyone should be an 'ally' regardless of if they just don't want to bother with that issue, and so on. They literally go around making enemies for trans people with their behavior and it's usually random trans individuals that pay for it as they don't have a large community to shield them from the results of the actions of said toxic individuals. It's truly sad.

Jane is absolutely notorious for her victim mentality, but Junebug's weaponized victim mentality and open use of death/un-aliving baiting for sympathy and to get out of the consequences of June's own actions is certainly up there. And unlike Jane, Junebug still has friends in high places willing to excuse that behavior and sweep legitimate concerns under the rug.
The fallout of Jane's saga, meanwhile, with the blatant ableism, transphobia and homophobia rearing its hydra heads, is all but validating many of the things she's said (in a general sense) about how hateful people in this playerbase can be.

It's so hard to not physically and mentally shrink and feel weak at times, and defence starts to kick in poorly. It's ruined friendships where I personally ran from problems till it destroyed a personally important place I felt safe.

Jane has always been this way though. I don't understand how people can say this is a reaction from her being attacked constantly when this is what she's always done. The trans attacks were very much real, i'm not taking that away from her, but the issue here is that she's always been reactionary towards the negativity. She'll take a couple of negative replies on twitter after making some really controversial hot takes and use that to boost her "positive community branding". She hides behind this toxic positivity that she surrounds herself in constantly and needs to be in the spotlight. Jane has done this since the start but not many people have been around her long enough to notice. A lot of us have, and a lot of us know of her tweet and delete behaviors when a post doesn't go as "viral" as she wants. Even during all this constant stuff now, the moment she realized that it wasn't going her way she started deleting posts left and right and stalking about needing "a break". this is who she is and trying to give her the benefit of the doubt is only going to enable her behavior more and more.

-Three week later i face against her as Skull Merchant in Dead Dawg Saloon, i had the nickname of "FYouSkullMerchant" because i don't like the killer and most players takes you hostage for 40 minutes, we did all the gens, she camped hooked Nancy with the 3 drones near her, at the end trying to save Nancy we all die, until endgame chat i realize that once again she was Jane Romero TTV and went a bit aggressive just for my username and i remember about her words of camping and i quote "Later you are crying in Twitter that killer camps you, but it is fair if you do it" That thing made her more aggressive after i saw how was really: "Transphobic" "Stalker" "Harasser" "Illegal Inmigrant" I told her that i can't be transphobic or Anti-LGBT if i have a bisexual girlfriend, a closer friend who is gay and has a boyfriendy, a online trans friend who i support her in a toxic environment. "You transphobic always are lying, you take my depression as advantage, the community of Dead by Daylight is bs" and once again posted this time only the lobby like "Guess who is the transphobic" She this time didn't posted the endgame chat because in every comment she told me horrible stuff and casually she wasn't streaming... my "illegal" words vs her word

Her behavior isn't excusable, but I do think I understand where it's coming from. We're at a point where trans people are being attacked in the media and by state governments on a level of which we haven't seen in 20 years. It's really, really easy to be on high alert at all times and see everything through the lens of transphobia.
On the other hand, when she incorrectly uses transphobia as a shield, she isn't actually calling out transphobia. She is using the entire trans community as a shield for her inappropriate behavior at a time where we're already getting thrown under the bus. She's doing actual harm to our community by devaluing the very real concept of transphobia, putting a massive target on the back of other trans creators.
I'm just really upset by the whole thing and feel like a lot of trans creators will now suffer the consequences of her own poor decisions.

@@matthewcochrane9499 I might be about to ruin that by saying I feel iffy about that comment, since saying I'm one of the good ones kinda makes it sound like the average one of us is "bad". I'm sure you meant well, but you're probably just getting shown the worst of us because of how social media tends to work. It's statistically true that we're far less likely to be hired and even less likely to be paid the same if we do get hired in states without proper labor protections. But I DO just want to live my life and express myself. That only really becomes difficult when every day is spent with actual transphobes telling me I'll never be a woman, I should off myself, sending me pictures of people hanging themselves, etc. Which is kind of a daily event as a trans streamer.
I'm lucky enough to have a decent acting career irl and people that support me but not all trans people are as lucky as I am.
But people criticizing me for things completely unrelated to being trans aren't transphobic for doing that. I'll only ever call out transphobia if they're specifically focusing on me being trans. Hating me for other reasons is totally valid. And if someone calls me bro or some shit on an anonymous game like DBD I'm not gonna instantly get mad at them like what happened here.
Guess what I really mean to say is my mentality is kind of the mentality of the average trans person. Most of us just want to live our lives and exist like anyone else as the people we feel we are supposed to be. When you're constantly attacked it can be very hard to escape a victim POV and your guarding against further attacks goes into overdrive, resulting in kneejerk reactions as highlighted above. If you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail. If you've been under persistant attacks, anything that isn't wholly positive can feel like veiled or prelude to an attack, and even positive comments can be received with suspicion.

And as a trans person myself thats just ridiculous. I and many stood by her when she was wronged. She needs to learn that simply because you are part of a minority doesnt mean you cant fuck up and thats the biggest problem.
The tweet that made me step away was when she made a tweet that she was upset bigger DBD creators didn't step in to defend her on the whole "crazy" situation. Think about it: why on earth did Jane suddenly say that she personally felt attached to Adriana's (skull merchant) character as a whole when the character can be summed up as a narcissist that can only see the end results of things being nothing but what she wants and will anything to get to it? It felt really sudden, but as this has been unfolding I started to see how she considered skull merchant as her new personal character, which saddens me since I've seen Jane as a awesome figure in the dbd community fall from grace

Jane, more often than not, has used her identity as a reason to harass others when they share an opinion. Any time somebody tries to tell her something constructive she resorts to manipulation and, pardon me if this is not the correct usage here, narcissistic behavior. I know as a trans person online she’s definitely faced her share of bullying but now she’s taking any real attacks on her and using them as a weapon to beat down anyone. It’s really harmful and unfair to people who simply have a differing opinion than her with no malicious intent.
I understand she’s been the victim many times, but she’s been using the victim perspective too freely as of late. She is out of touch and needs to take accountability. She’s painting herself as the biggest victim and tarnishing the reputation of not only herself, but DBD queer creators. I do not support attacking her, that won’t help anything. But she needs to take accountability and leave the internet. It’s proven to be an unhealthy place for her.
Losing an audience and an online presence is what she needs, because too often I’ve seen her fly off the handle and that’s not okay. I hope she improves and does better with her mental health, but I believe it’s time for her to go away for her own good. Much love, all xx

After the test the vast mayority said the scars made a big impact on the interview while some even felt the scars were mentioned and they felt attacked.
When you feel like you are being a victim the brain being the expert pattern finders that it is is going to look for confirmation of that.

It happens to everyone in everyday life, too, not just streamers. And while I think Jane was out of line with how she handled this particular situation, I can sympathize with what may have gotten her here. Let's face it, this community can be awesome but can also be extremely toxic. I can understand why someone who has suffered abuse from the community might be quick to become defensive and angry.
I hope she takes some to deal with what she is going through internally and then makes an informed decision on whether she should return to the various platforms that may have caused some of the stress. Here I go: I know I hurt many friends, many followers and, expecially, the trans people I always wanted to try to uplift and defend. I've no excuses for my attitude: hurting someone, if you're hurt yourself, will only cause more harm. I have no will to share the events that bringed me to my mental breakdown, because whatever the events were I had to be stronger, taking the signs and logging off those medias that were hurting me (Twitter in primis). Twitter in particular is a platform that lacks of any form of moderation: seeing my face used everyday to create hurtful accounts pushed me to my lowest point, also because reports did absolutely nothing. I'm not a strong person, not because I couldn't deal to these attacks, but because I wasn't able to recognise how already broken I was and that I needed help before losing faith in everything, included the people who were trying to help and support me in these hard times. I take accountability of every wrong action I committed here and I'll work harder and harder during the next months to correct these wrong sides of myself, to find that kind of joy I lost, with the support I need from therapist, etc... I think that Twitter is not an healthy place for me in general and I recognise that as my personal limit and I've to accept it. The first step was reaching my therapist and getting into more medicines to help with my anxiety and depression, also reaching my family and my only friend who still lives in my hometown (all the other ones moved away for professional reasons).
However, I'm not going to take a break in general: I think that if you make mistakes, really bad mistakes, you still put your face out there and face the consequences of what you've done. I accept and understand the disappointment and the anger of former followers, fellow content creators and also friends I really cared about (but that I understand for taking the choice of taking distance from me): escaping is not the way. I made mistakes and I pay for these, putting my face into it and not escaping from my responsibilities. Holding up to my mistakes, accepting that what I did was wrong, understanding what to improve and keep doing the few things I can do decently is the way I want to afford this whole situation. I'm better than this, even if I understand who doesn't want to trust me anymore, they're in the right of standing to this position and actions and not just words have to prove things differently.
Thank you for the call out, that I deserved because what I did was wrong, but also for giving context, that in no way justifies my actions. I hope in the future we can reach each other on more positive notes and I can be able to promote the same kind of positivity I was aiming to before starting to not believe in a possibility of a better world. Wishing to you and everyone else I "betrayed" the best possible Summer.
