My big sister was diagnosed with breast cancer last February. She had a double mastectomy in April, and was convinced by her doctors to get implants at the same time. She ended up cancer free, which is amazing, but her body immediately rejected the implants. She got Breast Implant Illness, which I didn’t even know was a thing. She had them removed two months ago. She was extremely sick for over a year, more sick than the cancer treatments had made her. Now after researching and realizing the serious risks, and how many women get sick, I’ll never get implants. My aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer over 30 years ago. She ended up getting silicone implants and one broke inside her this was in the early 80s. The silicone traveled through her whole body causing an serious infection she almost died. She was living in California at the time it actually caused infertility as well. She went all the way to congress in the 90s with a hundred of other woman and testified in class action suit against that manufacturer of those implants and they won. However to this day she still has silicone floating around her body and has chronic pain, fatigue, autoimmune issues, and more, she's now in her late 60s and because of her story I changed my mind about getting mine done! However it didn't stop my mom who's her youngest sister and my aunt strongly believes my mom is slowly being poisoned by her implants but we've tried talking my mom to get them removed for a few years now but she's a nurse and if she can't physically see it, it doesn't exist.

Breast implants up to this date have a black box warning for risk or cancer and breast impla t ilness. I think we need to start having deeper conversations about this topic. Should people do whatever they want with their bodies ? Absolutely. But I don't think we should treat surgeries like 'as long as u have a good surgeon it's all good it's no big deal' it's a huge deal!!!! Just in the instance of breast implants:
    - black box label warning for health concerns
    - the antibiotics post surgery often affect your gut
    - your body can't diferentiate life Savings and cosmetic surgeries
-will you have money to pay for scans as you won't be able to do mamograms
-will you be able to afford an explant if it makes you sick
    - who put this beauty standard in your head and how do you truly know this isbyour opinion and taste

    • @JamesWelsh
      @JamesWelsh  Pƙed rokem +18

I think it’s a very valid / important point for sure! I would argue that black box warnings are more of a guideline for practitioners to decide wether or not the procedure / medication is the right fit for the patient than a warning for people to avoid the thing all together. And I stress that whilst it is a very important factor (especially breast implant illness I’m sure will become a more regulated terms with an actual diagnosis in the future) it shouldn’t be something that drives the complete abolishment of a procedure of medicine. The points you made regarding gut health etc are all valid points that a good surgeon etc should made clear to you upon consultation and I do thing it’s fair to say to get a good surgeon! Again, whilst all your points are valid and something to consider, a good surgeon will 1) let a patient know if they’re the right fit for this kind of surgery. Health history taken into consideration 2) perform checkups and know when to recommend them 3) in initially consultation about the costs of the implants that go further than just the procedure itself. I also don’t think personally that realising your insecurities or want for cosmetic surgery ( for vanity reasons) is enough to erase decades of insane beauty standards. So I say do what makes you confident as long as what you are doing is for you. Erasing beauty standards is going to take decades, but I believe the beauty industry is going in the right direction

@@JamesWelsh i dont think the surgery should be abolished but i do think we focus so much on 'you do you' that we treat it like surgery is no big deal when it is for so many reasons. And no, black box warning is not just for drs, its for all involved, thats why if you purchase certain black box medication it literally has a black stripe visual warning so you know that is not something to play around with, (eg take when you feel like it, give it to someone else based on their symptoms etc). We often emphasise good Drs but at the end of the day, they run a business based on insecurities, they will only turn away the clearly VERY mentally sick people. I have too many friends that went to top surgeons for breast implants specifically and were never warned about cancer risk + other symptoms (that fall under BIL), the both of them had money for scans, scans showed nothing wrong w implants, on the explant surgery is when they found one of them had a damaged implant and sick looking capsule around it and the other had damaged her rib cage which previous tests had not picked up. One of them had no symptoms for 6 years and only started 3 years ago. ITS A BIG DEAL AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH!

BUT in Canada, it's not FDA approved, there FOR elegal for ANY surgeon to preform Butt Implants in Canada!! They do allow TAKING, your OWN BODY Fat, & removed from the RIGHT places & then place the fat BACK inside YOU, in your butt! I said NO WAY, because us woman, have to STAND to USE the bathroom for 2 weeks, & MUST lay ONLY on YOUR tommy! So if you have to go number 2, you can PRAY that you can try & sqwat or, place your butt checks OVER the bath tub & go number 2 in your tub.. So that's why it was a HUGE NO!! The things some will go through, is shocking... I ONLY hope whatever ONE does, DO it for YOU, & if it makes you happy & WON'T harm YOU THEN GOOD LUCK & GOD BLESS💕✹🙏✹💕

The silicone in implants don’t leak, even when cut or punctured, the silicone stays in place. It’s not a free, flowing substance within the implant like saline implants think of it almost as a Gummy Bear. If the outside of silicone implants is compromised, it becomes extremely obvious because the shape becomes warped were there are bulges. There’s a rare chance of silicon toxicity, which is more so due to somebody’s hyper sensitivity to the silicone, and that is not from a punctured implant.

Holding and feeling all of the different types of breasts was interesting, but the funniest thing was talking to one of the booth personnel and he said he liked to use the silicone breast implants as a phone holder on his desk or in his car. He said they really held his phone in place and the breast usually would stick to the dash in his car. Now I am from the southern US and I know that the sun can make a dash super hot in the sun, so I asked, "What do you do in the summer?" He said he had to put up a visor or remove the implant from the dash because in the heat the breast would melt and ooze on his dash. I also found out that breast implants are not good for juggling.

The silicone leakage happened to my nana in the late 80s/early 90s! I’m not sure the legal route she took, but she ended up with a nice settlement (I believe it was from the practice who did the operation, not the manufacturer). She actually ended up getting both beasts redone in the 2000s against the advice of family.

Doctors in hospitals didn’t have a good understanding of germ theory and would go deliver babies after doing autopsies or treating the ill. Rarely were hands or medical instruments washed with more than just water.

Some people dont know that most cosmetic surgery, such as the breast implant, arent meant to be a "one and done," they are supposed to be replaced every 10 to 15 years . But no one goes for the further treatments and that can cause alot of medical issues down the road , if the implant ruptures or is leaking, ect. Its dangerous. I still want surgery if only i had the amount of money it is, its easy to look past the dangers of something when it comes to anxiety related body dysmorphia.

I fully support people who due it for medical reasons and mental health if it does interfere with daily life. But theres always the person that takes it too far. Oh James you missed one of the largest recent controversies with breast implants. Polypropolene string/yarn breast implants. Once implanted the polypropylene would absorb moisture from the body and increase in size, and then continue increasing in size. People who have had them done are still suffering to this day, with their breasts continuing to grow in size. The only thing that can be done is to remove breast tissue, but they'll still continue to grow. If memory serves me correctly this was in the 80s when it was tested. More or less they weren't ever approved, but surgeons still provided them to their clients. I highly recommend a deep dive into it, or maybe do a When Beauty Turns Ugly on this particular part of breast implant history.

The 3rd implant surgery has had to be rescheduled twice already because of covid, so she's been just so nervous about what could be going on. The whole idea of performing experimental surgery on people whose ability to consent is dubious - sex workers in occupied territory - is so disgusting and heartbreaking. Top that with the surgery being completely unnecessary and gratuitous... (the back story is that although the surgeon was Japanese, the designated "sex district" was created by American military, with the thinking that the US wanted "disease free" women for their soldiers. The breast implants were "suggested" as a means to keep U.S. and Ally soldiers in this district, rather than having them seek sex wokers in other areas.) Btw, this also happened in Vietnam.

I have to admit that as someone who had breast reconstruction I saw this and went "oh god what's he going to say!" but I knew it would be so interesting and that you would be incredibly kind and I was right on both accounts! Thank you for being so non-judgemental of those of us with them :)
I had my mastectomy preventatively when I was 24. I have a BRCA mutation and my cousin got cancer at 27, so I wanted to get it over with. I am so so thankful for the existence of silicone implants. Yes, there are non-implant methods of reconstruction but they are freaking intense. Like scar all the way across your stomach and being hospitalized for a week intense. And I just didn't want to harvest other parts of my body at that age. So silicone implants made so much more sense!
I do get kinda defensive when I see people decry them because they've been such a huge help to my life. I don't want to invalidate those with problems but these discussions always feel a bit tilted towards THEY WILL DESTROY YOU NEVER GET THEM and I'm like buuuuuut...
I am so thankful they were created and owe so much to all who suffered and experimented and ahhh... got stuffed with mulch. Implants really are important medical devices. They're so much more than just frivolous things we're pressured to get! Getting your breasts removed can be so emotionally painful and it's so important that we have options and the technology to look more like we once did.

In the episode, a woman apparently got a boob job and went on a plane and her implant burst and killed her. I was so sad for her and also the dramatic reenactment was horrifying!!

It rumored that Marilyn Monroe did the silicone drops and that she was in a lot of pain because of it. They really didn't have much they could do from what I understand - because the silicone was just free floating in there you couldn't get it out. Also it makes sense they originally were trying sponges and cartilage because - again from my Marilyn research - they often used that for chin implants. Marilyn *allegedly* had the cartilage for her chin implant and later had to go back to get a new implant because to had been absorbed by her body.

I love your video and watch your chanel everyday. The only thing I would say is that sometimes it’s confusing when you go back and forth talking about skincare and then the subject. You could put a filter when you talk about skincare or something? But either way nice video!!!❀

Im a 36 A, i wanted breast implants so badly when i was growing up and seeing all the other girl get "real boobs" i love my small boobs now and would never get them. Do what ever you want just make sure its realy going to make you happy and its not for "Society standards"❀

I’m satisfied with my 38B, but sometimes I envy girls with smaller boobs because they can get away with wearing revealing clothes and not attract negative attention.
